Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. Audience 8.8 - This is an interesting recording because while the guitar is very close and defined, the rest of the band is kind of floating above you. It’s as if the taper’s mic was placed in front of Jeff’s guitar cab and at the same time he was able to capture the rest of the sound through the main P.A. so it’s kind of strange. Audience 8.7 A real surprise here because when I first came across this one I assumed it would be crap. Why had I not heard of it before if it was good? Well, sometimes stuff just slips through the cracks I guess. Soundboard 8.7 - The mix here tends to lean on a darker side (meaning more low end but not boomy) with guitar being clear enough but not the prominent instrument which is fine as this is totally all about ensemble and vastly different than anything he was doing with Deep Purple. That in itself makes this kind of odd, if he’s touring with Deep Purple yet managed to play some gigs with other people and sound so totally different musically, it’s really a zig zag routine here as the music is so all over the place in a good way. FM Broadcast 9.7- Brilliant sound, and so nice to have this because you get the full on experience with a great band and the great back up vocals of Ruby Starr (I honestly would not have minded at all for her to be the singer and Jim the washboard player and back up singer!). This is great stuff, really is. Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air? If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape! It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll.
