Soundboard 9.8 -I really cannot recommend this strongly enough. It’s a monster recording in every aspect – especially how direct and clear Jeff comes through. Just place your face directly in front of his amp and there you have it. Audience 8.4-8.6 - This gets a double rating because I found that it seemed to become better as it went, and really had its best moments during songs or parts that were not full on max volume. Now that being said, the mic that taper used (probably a condenser mic built into his deck) could not accurately reproduce the sound it was picking up in the hall to the tape itself – but because there was level adjust (I am guessing auto level), it never distorted. So what you get is a crowded sounding tape during most of the performance when the music is at full tilt (it’s Black Sabbath so yeah, it’s mostly full tilt), but during parts where the music is more sparse (like during Black Sabbath, or the solos, especially the drum solo) you can hear what the recorder was capable of because it is way much better. In fact I praise the drum sounds, super massive and that’s why I loved Black Sabbath on this tape in particular because it’s frighteningly dense and scary sounding here. This show can be appreciated for the inclusion of songs like Gypsy, All Moving Parts, and Rock and Roll Doctor which are audible enough that you can thank this taper. I’d not heard of this tape before so I assume it’s new to circulation, and personally speaking I am glad it exists and I feel it offers something worthwhile. Audience 8.4 - A tape that I am sure has slipped through the cracks and has been forgotten by collectors when I don’t think it ought to be. It’s surely not the greatest recording, and it’s also not nearly the worst – but it’s from a really great period and tour, some of the best moments for Rush seemed to occur on the European leg of the 1979 tour. You can listen to the infamous Offenbach or Pink Pop tapes as proof, but this forgotten old tape, having been dusted off and given a fresh re-mastering, is ready to be added to your collection. Audience 8.8 - A very good effort by taper to manage not only a good sounding capture but largely complete from start to finish with only occasional crowd interference (and usually limited to between songs). Audience 8.7 - The tape is new to circulation and it’s a good one. The rating reflects only that there is a lack of dynamics in the bandwidth of the tape but the clarity is decent and it is a comfortable listen – not harsh, not muddy, not brittle…it’s a good tape and I am glad it was discovered. Audience 9.2 - This recording has a special quality to it, it’s not that it’s technically great – the instrument separation isn’t very good but the band does project well – the thing about this tape is it feels like you are sitting just above the audience, in the middle of the room, and you hear the space around you, you have a great sense of where you are and it’s weird but you can visualize this show. I give it a high rating because this recording captures the “essence” of this moment in time in an accurate manner that allows the listener to be transported. Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go! Audience 8.8 - This old tape is fascinating, and frustrating. The “DJ” is a guy who seems to work for a local radio station who somehow got to broadcast this show – but my spidey sense says it’s not actually what went down. This is a ruse to get the tape machine into the venue, I am willing to bet money on it. So, he’s in the venue but to keep up appearances he does station ID’s periodically (almost every song) and because of his cheap recorder, the station id he does just sounds like a loud sonic swoosh (thankfully they are real short). Zep are in good form but fight constantly against poor PA which makes for a very interesting evening and a unique tape. One thing I want to point out is that because of the weird PA problems, it seems Page is getting much more feedback than normal and it causes him to sound much more psychedelic and I actually enjoyed that very much. Audience 8.6 - This very decent old tape, previously ignored by collectors, takes a minute or two to get going so don’t be disappointed just hang in there. Once it settles in, it’s a very good tape that suffers maybe from some tape noise but really what I am going to tell you is that I would listen to this again because the performance here is among the very best, most ferocious I have honestly ever heard and I have heard MANY Rush recordings. Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. Pro 9.7 - One has to wonder with all the various BBC recordings in the Bowie catalog, what do I get from having one more? My take on that is usually there is always something overlooked or that could have been better – and with this collection all I hear is sparkling perfection. Someone did their homework here.
