• Audience 8.8  - The Zurich aftershow is decent enough for what had to be a packed club, so yeah it’s somewhat claustrophobic as you feel like you are squeezed between people and you are trying to bootleg the damn show ha ha!  It’s good, it’s not great. The rest of the material is excellent quality from various source but all great. PRINCE The War Disc 1 Newpower Soul Tour Aftershow Kaufleuten, Zurich 24th August 1998 1. • Audience 9.3 - A very good tape, with less of the perfect instrumental separation but more of the live power that can be delivered through good house P.A.’s, and as long as taper is not a complete moron and/or using radio shack circa 1985 gear, chances are you’ll end up with a nice recording…as this one is. • Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. If the vocals were a little bit louder I would have mistaken this for a radio broadcast. • Audience 9.5 - A sparkling, vivid recollection of a moment in time when an evening of progressive rock music was being performed by masters of the craft, and it was sublime. A recording that has wonderful atmosphere, solid and deep, showcasing both guitar and bass in a manner so that each are distinct yet blended perfectly. • Soundboard 9.4 - This is not a pure board and by that I mean it sounds like some of the instruments are not direct patches through the board onto the tape. It sounds like a hybrid where some of it is a direct feed and some of it is mic’d up. You can tell it is something like that when listening to the difference between the keyboards and vocals, and drums (especially the kick).  Either way it’s great. • Audience 9.4 - A tape that is almost TOO good…and by that I mean it has captured with sonic clarity the exact sound coming from the P.A. – which in this case was a P.A. that had some really pumping upper mid’s and high range frequencies!  No wonder people often leave home from a concert with a ringing in their ears…for weeks!  This show would have had me moving farther back to be honest. That being said it is just my own preference for sound – but the casual listener will find this recording damagingly good. • Denver 1983 Soundboard 9.3 - Typical of the sharp and detailed board tapes from this tour.

Detroit 1983 Video source 8.6 - Possibly grabbed off a VHS or some other video source. I cannot confirm this 100% but my ears tell me that is the case here. It is a professional recording with a lot of issues concerning compression and noise – I say it is pro because of the location this is being recorded from which seems definite it is not from the audience.

  • Soundboard 9.3 - There are moments in this recording that you swear it has to be one of Prince’s best ever – what got him so pumped up for this gig?  Maybe he was pumped for every gig but slightly more at certain gigs. I don’t know but this one got me pumped as well!  Love the energy and fluid playing.

  • Norfolk 1972 Audience 8.6 - A rough and tumble tape that surprisingly delivers the sounds you need to be able to hear the band play. The most important thing is this: Mick Taylor is the clearest! You wouldn’t expect that in a million years I know but here it is.

Indianapolis 1972 Audience 8.3 - Low end of the totem pole recording that is represented here because it is perhaps the best source for it. Is there anything salvageable at all?  Yes. It’s distant and not distinct but for completists they will be happy to have the good source and complete their 1972 tour collections.
