Anyone can get into this, even if the ARP synthesizer reminds you of disco sounds, you get enough of Boz and his cool little electric guitar fills to make up for it. Audience 8.8 - Excellent recording for the time period when it seemed most audience tapes sounded very flat and tinny. This one is pretty dynamic but for one fault (not tapers fault). The PA system, while good, did not give vocals enough clarity. During quieter passages, yes, but in louder parts (most of the gig) it’s sort of indistinct, but audible and not buried (just not real distinct). I mean, he’s totally audible is what I am getting at, but for some reason I can’t make out anything he’s singing about (is this par for the course with Marillion?). BTW the Genesis comparisons are accurate! Soundboard 8.8 - It’s kind of hard to rate this any higher due to the extreme hotness in the recording levels but it rates as high as it does because it’s unique among board tapes in that Mick Jagger sounds so live and in your face it’s like he’s singing next to you…scary I know. Now, just because this is a “hot” tape doesn’t mean you can’t hear anything, it’s all there but it’s all pretty forcefully delivered. I can’t say in this case it’s entirely a bad thing…’cause it does make for a rather “intimate” encounter with the Stones, especially you know who. Audience 9.5 - Brilliant! After sound adjustments the PA system just cranks out the best, clearest sound you could hope for. Almost everything is clear and balanced in the mix, I mean it ain’t perfect (for instance we don’t get the best balance between Keith and Ron) but it’s darn good. The sound mix has nothing to do with how well the audio capture is but it factors slightly in the rating. Audience 9.3 - A sweet recording that is so comfortable to listen to, so easy on the ears with a nice rolling bass and present but not obtrusive drums. Mick is above the fray where he should be and guitars swirl and hum beneath him…excellent! Audience 9.1 - A great sounding capture that is just a little further back than the previous night…still it’s really good because the dynamic range is wide and warm. The sound mix itself is not heavy on the guitars here, it’s really Mick and drums followed by the low rumble of the bass. Guitars are here just not the spotlight instrument which in my opinion I prefer them front and center. Alas, I found myself able to appreciate the contributions of everyone else for once. Audience 8.8 - This tape is fascinating! Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 9.1 -A fantastic tape that gets the right amount of atmosphere to give you a good sense of the moment, the venue, the crowd. The quality of the sound is very clean and punchy although leans toward an upper mid band frequency at the expense of the bottom end. It’s not as full a sound as could have been but it’s an excellent quality of sound nonetheless. The music is very engaging, this is a most welcomed tape.
