Roslyn 1976 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Powerful! If you are not familiar with Tommy Bolin and want to learn more, start here! If you are already on the Tommy train – keep riding! This is unbelievably good! Detroit 1976 Audience 8.8 - This is a very good sounding tape in many regards although it is recorded in a large, cavernous arena and therefore you won’t get some of the detail a more intimate venue would give you. The vocals are somewhat drowned out by a guitar sound that is quite huge, with the bass complementing that hugeness to the degree that this show is a guitar/bass tour de force. Thankfully Tommy is the shining star in this recording…and shine he did. Soundboard 9.9 - This nearly brought me to tears. I always knew this band could reach the highest level of quality, in performance, in tone, in showmanship, and here it is. Yeah, sure, I know what you are thinking: “it’s mid 80’s Aerosmith, it’s the doldrums of rock, it’s a washed up bunch of druggies” but I have to tell you that if this marks a “comeback” then it’s the most amazing comeback I have ever heard. I’ve heard tons of live Aerosmith and I take this show over ALL of them. Pro 9.9 - this is unbelievably solid. Everything is in the pocket, which is awfully hard to do with a metal band. Every instrument, and the crowd mixed in to provide atmosphere. This had to be a broadcast, but it’s not from a broadcast it has to be a pre-broadcast master. I mean, it’s almost perfect. Audience 8.6 - A new tape to circulation and a most welcomed one. It’s certainly quite different and for Zep collectors will be analyzed incessantly and be shown as a “keeper” for many reasons. Sound quality is a little hissy but surprisingly clear and without mud. Dynamically it’s not going to shatter any records but let me tell you for what this is, it offers a fascinating window into a hard-working touring band making yet another tour stop in some out of the way, random Scandinavian town nobody has ever heard of. Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks. In excellent, mind-bending sonic POWER – the kick drum literally will kick your skull in – the crowd extending their pleasure with every note. For those only familiar with their two radio staples, you will most certainly want to re-examine this band’s output after hearing this. I know I did! Audience 8.4 - This is a hard one to set aside, it’s an uncommon tape that sounds very good. It’s bright, and atmospheric (not echoey!) without any big hall boominess. The real selling point here is that both Ozzy and Randy are the focus in this live mix. I say go ahead and grab it if you want to hear the very early Blizzard Of Ozz on tour ‘cause this is a great find. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. Audience 8.6 - Pretty solid actually, you get pretty good instrument separation even though the rhythm guitar and bass combination is REALLY powerful on this tape, just thankfully not enough to bury the lead work which rings out over the top of it all. Audience 8.7 - For me, this tape was completely unknown. So, hearing it for the first time I was very excited because it’s a very comfortable sounding tape. The dynamics may be a little bunched up right in the middle but the frequency range here, going from lows to highs, is very comfortable to the ears. It’s also taped somewhat close to the stage, unlike the Fresno tapes which are good but a bit distant. I compare because the dynamics are similar. A good one for sure! Audience 8.8 - Easily one of the best audience recordings of the tour. Very close to the main P.A. system on Tony’s side of the stage, this puts Ozzy a little in the background but not so much he cannot be heard reasonably well. It’s just, well, it’s the sheer POWER on display by the band that makes this one so special and that the recording manages to deliver that without glaring problems (and in 1973, wow!) is a miracle. Audience 9.2 - A recording that does more than merely capture a live concert on tape, it captures the dynamics and palpable vibe of the event. This is lovely stuff, with the band delivering stunning readings of majestic progressive rock numbers like Sound Chaser and Close To The Edge. To be honest, sometimes the overly jazzy keyboards of Moraz do conflict with the style and sound of the band but mostly he is able to provide the correct sounds during the key parts. Audience 8.3 - Do not let the low rating dissuade you from obtaining this show, because it is actually pretty clear and for this tour probably one of the better auds. It does lean toward low end, in a good way because it does not crowd everyone else out. Eddie is on fire and you hear him well, vocals and bass are solid (vox are a touch behind it all but still right there) so perhaps drums are the weakness but even then I can hear what he’s doing. Once your ears adjust, man this ain’t that bad. Soundboard 9.7 - This is what keeps me excited about collecting…this right here. I was not very knowledgeable of their live catalog (whatever is out there, IDK) and so I did not know what to expect with this. Man, just man, it literally BLEW me away! Just amazing in every way – and the playing, along with pristine sound quality, it’s just a no-brainer. I did not know how accomplished these guys were, the musicianship is off the charts good. Very tight, very professional, and great songs for the style they play in – they even cover Lynyrd Skynyrd as a nod to their counterparts. Good, I mean, GREAT stuff! You can tell he is drunk, but even with all the stuff happening on stage (some clearly audible), the band still manage to put on a good show. Audience 8.7 - A nicely atmospheric recording without reverb which is nice. Sound mix is good, you hear everyone in pretty good detail. Sounds like it might be maybe 1/3 of the way back in the hall but it’s done with good equipment seems like. Overall a good recording here. SDBRD 9.9 - The only thing that gets this to a 10 is a better kick drum sound (extreme nitpicking here). -
Soundboard 8.9 - Hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to listening to vintage Kiss board tapes, that is, if you are like me and grew up with Kiss. Believe it or not, Kiss displayed very competent musicianship back in these days. -
Audience 9.7 - One of those recordings that validate my argument that some audience tapes are superior to soundboards. Lush and warm, with great atmosphere and precision detail. Wowsers! -
Aud 8.3 - Now Hendrix collectors all know that good quality 68 tour recordings are in short supply, so when they pop up, well it’s a no-brainer…so we have two no-brainers here for you. Both are very decent, and the Vancouver in particular is very cool in both sound and performance. -
Aud 8.4 - Oh how I love this show! Why? It’s reasonably clear with only a bit of upper level distortion – but man, this just blows EVERYTHING away! The set list for one, it’s got some little gems on it, and the playing – YUP – he’s killin’ it. What else? Oh, a very intimate feel, just has a sort of immediate impact kind of sound. Mitch and Noel are spot on, Jimi feeds off of their energy as well as the audience. A MUST!
