Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man! NOTE: Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs. FM Broadcast 9.2 - Even though this is a broadcast, it retains a "rough" mix quality to it which suits the band's sound and style. The recording quality is fantastic, it does not have a lifeless feel but rather an obvious impromptu feel as you can tell by the stage feedback as the mix gets dialed in. Audience 9.0 - I have to say this is a very good recording if your preference is to really be able to make out the vocals and to hear every nuance of the lead guitar possible. In fact, the sonics tend to favor the upper mid-range and highs, to the extent that I was not enthusiastic about the sound of the snare drum here...but that just shows you how articulate that range is. Is it screechy then? No, it's not that this is chirpy or screechy high at all, but one may want to play with the EQ to bring up more low end maybe...because to my ears that is what it needs. Otherwise, again, this is a VERY clear, articulate (especially upper mid and highs) recording. Black Sabbath Mid-Hudson Civic Center Poughkeepsie,NY. USA 31 May 1989 Disc 1 101. Audience 9.4 - Bright, lively, well-positioned recording that doesn't leave anything out. If anything, I would have preferred even more lower end, that being said the bass itself is detailed and clear. I also, maybe, would have equalized just a little more of the mid band and highs, rolling off them just a touch but this is a GREAT problem to have for an analog tape recording. Putting high end into the spectrum is way much harder to do than removing it. Again though, this is just seasoning to taste and the listener may find it perfect - which technically speaking I admit the frequency range is extremely intact here. OK City - Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent from the start, with a great tonal quality that brings out tremendous detail in the guitar. This board tape manages to not sound like a "bored" tape! New York - Soundboard 9.4 - A more toned down, warmer sound than the OKC, this board tape focuses on the band as a whole. The sound is full, rich, and inviting which presents the listener a choice: do you like the more "live" sound or do you prefer an almost "studio" like quality in a live recording? I would opt for a healthy combination of both I suppose.

Audience 9.4 - A delightful and warm atmosphere highlight this bright and well mixed concert recording. I struggled to find any reason to criticize it, but there are some occasional voices behind taper, and that is REALLY nitpicky. Pro Audience 9.1 - More than likely this was recorded for broadcast, but it's not a soundboard, or, perhaps it is a close/distance mic'd job because it is definitely not from the audience. It's probably a stage mic placement, that is about all I can decipher because while it is not quite up to prime time for a pristine radio broadcast, it is the next best thing in that you get more atmospherics than a straight board recording. Soundboard 9.3 - What you would expect from a direct to tape from the mixing console recording. It's super clear and clean and every instrument in a place where it's easily distinguishable, but don't assume it's just a dry, lifeless thing 'cause it ain't. It's not mixed for a release of any kind, but as a reference, so there's nothing to tame the Wildman when he's on the microphone - and that's the life of the party right there. Audience 9.2 - I would have given this a higher rating but for some occasional volume fluctuations. Minus those, this is a "raise the hair on your back" type of recording. I can't explain it, some tapes just have it, this unquantifiable element, it's a lot to do with the band being recorded as much as it is in how they were recorded, and where exactly the taper sat, and what he used to record - so you take all that and factor it in to what is happening to you as you listen to an event that took place decades ago...that comes to life again and you are right there. Audience 8.8 - A well made recording that does straddle the fence a bit. There's some narrowness in how well defined the extreme ends are in both low and high end, meaning your middle frequencies are spot-on, clear, and defined but when you get to the real high end it gets crinkly up there. It does not damage the listening experience but could if you really crank up the volume. The taper does some adjusting it seems, as the show progresses it sounds like the tonality, or levels...something changes slightly...I don't know what really happens but sometimes this show is dialed in and sounds really great and then just ever so slightly it gets less defined or maybe it is my imagination. Either way, this is a really decent recording. Audience 9.7 - For me, this right here encapsulates the 70's for me growing up. When I first discovered rock and roll, the radio was on repeat with the Frampton Comes Alive! album, and everyone in the neighborhood had a copy. I had it on 8 track. This live recording is the bomb, just a wonderful document of a great moment in 70's rock music history. I love the atmosphere too, everything about this actually does "come alive" and for that it deserves the high rating. Studio Quality 9.8 - Fantastic insight into the working progress of a masterpiece album. One thing that stood out for me was listening to the drums, they aren't exactly going to be the biggest takeaway when considering the performance as a whole but when they are dissected and highlighted you really understand the craft that goes into it. Let's put it this way - the drums aren't just being banged upon, they are being played. Audience 9.0 - The only thing keeping this from attaining legendary status is the slight distortion present in a very specific middle to upper band in the frequency range. It's not a deal-breaker, it's in a place where you still get all the richness of the low end and the detail in the high end. The taper obviously used very good gear, so maybe the microphone he used and the location in the venue perhaps limited the recording in a way, because this is still a damn good tape but could have been a bona-fide must have. Audience 9.2 - The first thing that hit me with this recording is the lovely feel of it, silky and round with a solid "thwack" of the kick drum to make you remember what it's like to stand in front of the mains at a stadium rock show. A fine recording that belongs in every Bowie fan's collection. Audience 9.4 - Well done, a consistent and even quality, captures the feel of the venue and since the equipment used seems to be very high quality, it allowed for plenty of headroom in the recording and that allows the listener to adjust volume and EQ to suit their tastes...not that it needs much. Audience 8.8 - It's kind of a good thing that this concert is performed acoustically because the way this taper captured it I can't imagine an electric guitar, bass, and drums with the massive volume it would have been. That is because this sounds like taper was very close, and the hall acoustics are very "live", so, in essence because it is acoustic it isn't a loud, distorted mess...but could easily have been if this was any louder or closer to the stage. It's just at the breaking point volume wise, and there's the slightest touch of distortion affecting one frequency somewhere in the upper mid-range, this came close to being a problem but is thankfully kept at bay and never rose above the level of "minor annoyance" so all-in-all this becomes quite a keepsake memory for fans as it is a highly unusual type of gig.
