  • Soundboard 9.2 & Audience 9.7 - Right away you are going to question this rating. Most of you will be familiar with the ’69 set as it is well traveled and professionally recorded and as such has a purity about it. Now, I like it, I like the purity and clarity and all of that, but just listen to the raw audience tape from 1972 and then tell me it doesn’t deserve the rating I give it. If you don’t hear the unbridled intensity, the electricity zapping the entire stadium and coming through your speakers directly into your head at full throttle, than just stop collecting right now and take up another hobby, maybe crochet or something. • Audience 8.8 - This rates highly as a new audio tape discovery from decades ago you might have low expectations but it’s a good, clear (but for Alice being a little low in the mix) and I would say powerful show in sound and performance. • Audience 8.9 - A strong tape here, with very open, spacious sound and pleasant high end. It could benefit from more bottom but it’s not what I would call “thin” sounding. • Audience 8.6 - This old tape has been extensively reworked to present a fan favorite in as good of quality as ever. It’s not a great tape recording but it’s actually kind of a charmer, this is due in part because this old theater was a favorite venue for many of the classic UK prog and Canterbury groups of the time. It’s a very appealing concert, you can kind of sense the band relishes it. • Audience 8.5-9.1 All in all, for what you are privy to hear in this collection (some pretty darn rare bits!), it’s pretty good and listenable. It sounds to me that the band, from 1973 and again a few years later in 1975/78 REALLY progressed, it’s almost like night and day. I do like the early, raw stuff because it shows what a band can become if given half a chance. Judas Priest Rarities 1973-1981 Disc 1 London May 10, 1973 First gig with Halford 1. Cheater 2. • FM Broadcast 8.8 -  A radio broadcast that was captured to cassette. I'd almost call it an audience recording because it’s kind of got that same sort of feel except for the vocals and the bass as they have this quality to it that reminds me more of FM broadcasts. Be that as it may, it’s a good one from 1979 which doesn’t seem to be as well represented as either the year before or after. KANSAS MONOLITH IN THE STORM Alpine Valley East Troy, WI. • Soundboard 9.5 - A great recording, with an occasional stumble caused by the soundman trying to balance things and tweaking a mic too much getting feedback but thankfully only here and there. Gordon gets a little annoyed at it too, but he’s a real pro and it shows. I get the feeling that although some of his music may have been familiar to some in the audience, he probably did not relate so much to the hippy generation. • Soundboard 9.8 - What makes this recording rate so highly is the professionalism all around – that means the band first for putting in the sparkling performance (and that’s even more succinct here with the unusual line-up and changing sound of Tull), and then the sound engineer for so deftly mixing and preserving this recording. I mean, it’s not just a board tape where you pop in the cassette and capture whatever sound you’ve dialed in for the evening, this is a well manicured mix that seemingly must have been made with a view towards a release because it is just too good, too perfectly balanced to be just a house mix. • Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air?  If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape!   It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. • Soundboard 8.7 - The mix here tends to lean on a darker side (meaning more low end but not boomy) with guitar being clear enough but not the prominent instrument which is fine as this is totally all about ensemble and vastly different than anything he was doing with Deep Purple. That in itself makes this kind of odd, if he’s touring with Deep Purple yet managed to play some gigs with other people and sound so totally different musically, it’s really a zig zag routine here as the music is so all over the place in a good way.
