• Audience 8.7 and 8.8 - Both of these recordings are quite good, and most welcomed. Each feature Bob Welch, although the ’72 also has Danny Kirwan still on board (but not for much longer). You can tell he is drunk, but even with all the stuff happening on stage (some clearly audible), the band still manage to put on a good show. • Audience/SDB 8.9/8.5/9.2/8.7  - A mixed bag but all in all I found it to be very interesting and sound quality held up respectably considering how rare some of this material is. • Soundboard 9.7 - Not all board tapes are exceptional, even if they sound good. What makes for an exceptional one is whether it sounds “live” or not, and this one most definitely does! • Audience 8.7 - A little on the upper midrange/high side but VERY clean and crisp with very pronounced and clear vocals especially. Really great!
  • Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks. • Audience 8.2 - Very live, with that telltale large hall reverb but smoking hot show and audio is real good and very electric.
  • Foghat 7.4 ~ Robin Trower 7.5 ... Interesting concept, including the opening act and headliner in a 2 disc set - but it makes sense to me and it works spectacularly here. The quality is decent, I rate conservatively, you can really sink your ears (and teeth) into both sets but I give the slight edge to Trower's set as he was headlining and therefore probably got better service from sound guy.
  • Soundboard/Audience matrix 9.5 - Here you have a recording that does both of the things you want in a live concert experience – clarity and punch via soundboard and ambience, immersion, electricity of the audience. The audience recording being blended in really adds to this experience, even when you hear excitable fans clapping nearby…it’s quite exhilarating really and this recording will eventually be hailed and revered by fans because…well, unfortunately because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins (RIP). • Audience 8.5 - Solid all the way.
  • Soundboard 8.8 - Probably radio broadcast, very strong and dynamic if just a tad dated sounding.
  • FM Radio Broadcast 8.7 - Pretty rocking debut, and even though the audio quality is not perfect (although it is great) I really like the rawness and band interplay of their early gigs.
  • Budokan 1978 - Audience 7.6 - Too much high end, sounds like all the bass was filtered out. Add bass! Mantra Studios 1977 – FM Radio Broadcast 9.0

  • New York 1973 SDBRD 9.2 - Excellent professionally recorded show. It’s easy to hear how it was that his star took off and exploded just a few short years later. New Orleans 1973 Audience 8.8 - A strong, clear, atmospheric recording (easy to put yourself in the taper’s seats). I always thought some bands sound better if they aren’t captured through the board…Frampton has such good stage presence and there’s always such a good audience report…audience tapes of excellent quality are the best listening experience imho. • Audience 8.8 - This is the exact kind of audience tape I love the most. It’s taped from pretty close to the stage, is not overloaded, but it is overloaded with manic energy and intensity. Steve Vai brought out the best in Frank, you can hear it on full display here. A wonderful show (open air), a great tape, a must have. Also there are fewer 1982 shows recorded than you might think.
  • SDBRD 9.5 - Excellent comp of extended guitar jamming, from 1978-1980 period. FRANK ZAPPA "Monsters" 01 Persona Non Grata (1978-10-15 Stony Brook) 02 Outside Now (1980-10-31 New York City) 03 City Of Tiny Lites (1980-11-18 St. Paul) 04 Easy Meat (1980-06-24 Geneva) 05 Inca Roads (1979-03-19 Brest) 06 Chunga's Revenge (1980-07-02 Frankfurt) 07 Black Napkins (1978-10-13 Passaic)
  • Audience 9.2 - Solid recording with just enough of an atmosphere, I mean, the only thing you might notice is the vocals having a little hall “verb” and thus not having the precision necessary to hear every word clear as a bell…but the overall sound, vibe, the concert recording is excellent and highly recommended. • Audience 8.7 - You are a little deeper in the audience for this show, but it’s a fun ride because the audience at this show is so into it, they know what they are seeing and hearing and the band responds to it by giving one hell of a performance. A touch thin in the bandwidth but it is clearly captured enough to where you will get drawn into it completely. Guitar sounds cool, the atmosphere lends itself well to Frank’s sound here. • Soundboard? I think it could be because there’s no audience noise here. It’s an OK board if it is, but quality is hovering around 8.6 so it is well worth getting.
  • Audience 8.1 - Do not be dismayed by this sound rating, in fact this has been re-mastered and is vastly superior to all other versions out there. The lineage of this recording was the cause of some confusion for decades – it was believed to have been from Rotterdam but is in fact Amsterdam. Why this show has been overlooked by collectors is beyond me, it’s a marathon concert and should be in the collection. Maybe it was the marginal sound quality of previous versions? Oh well, now we have this.
  • Audience 8.7 - Very direct sound, as if taper had great seats, but there’s some background hiss that is not too bad, and the sound is not exactly “full bodied” but it’s pretty darn clear. A good one, and 1977 was not a tour where there is an overwhelming amount of recordings for some reason.
  • Audience 8.8 - An onstage reel to reel recording as were many others that were done similarly on this tour. A good, strong and present recording capturing all the action clearly. This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. • Audience 8.7 - Clear, and a good mix with Frank at the front – performance here is stellar!
  • Audience 8.9 - Great atmosphere and really what I would call an "in-the-pocket" live mix. Frank really shines as the band introduce new songs to an audience they hope responds well because these versions are played with some serious intention. Frank's solos are spot on, he's not missing notes or going way off on meaningless tangents and that makes for some spellbinding moments. A very worthwhile listen...a keeper!

  • Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig.
