• Audience 8.4 - While not nearly as spectacular as the Uniondale ’77 (a pro-mixed board btw), this is still an important tape being that it is among the last of the Kath era shows. It’s also not bad at all – in a narrow bandwidth it manages to offer decent separation of instruments and nothing annoying in the frequencies. It’s a solid capture on limited equipment and for that I give the thumbs up to the tapers. • Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit.  I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. • Audience 8.4 - A tape that seems like it’s been heavily re-worked to clean it up and give it some life. Pretty decent, leans towards the upper frequencies a bit, lacks some punch in the center, but it is still a good one.

  • FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. A nice trip through the most important years for Chicago. All of the audio quality is either very good or excellent, with a mix of audience and soundboard sources. Includes a wonderful soundboard recording of Terry Kath's last show. A fitting way to end a great set. Nice touch to include a video CD with some real nice old footage. Original price was: $16.49.Current price is: $14.00.
Soundboard 9.7 - From the very beginning you know you are in for quite a thrill ride with this one. As good as it gets, highly recommended!
  • FM Broadcast 8.8 - A terrific slice of power pop played by perhaps the best ever in the genre. All the songs are killer - no filler, a band at the height of their powers.
  • Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air?  If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape!   It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. • CD1 Audience 9.1 - A great capture of the evening’s festivities. Clear, close, well balanced. Bravo!  CD2 Audience 8.7 - A big bold sound, and from the master tape, but where disc 1 has well defined instrument separation, this one is a more melded together sound with emphasis on bottom end. You still have an enjoyable experience, but it’s more about the rock and roll power rather than finesse with this tape.
