Philadelphia 1983 Audience 8.8 - This tape is very “live” sounding, especially the drums which seem to cascade around your head with Tyler being just slightly above the fray although the enunciation is not that great. Guitars are somewhat in back of things, so really on this tape it’s Tyler and Kramer leading the way in the mix. The good thing about this tape is that it is sharp and clear, the separation of instruments is not so much but at least it’s not muddy. I think Tyler is performing as well as he was capable…take it for what it’s worth but he’s good on this night. Ventura 1983 Audience 9.0 - A really good tape that captures quite the disaster of a gig…poor o’l Steven Tyler – lost his stage mate and now has to carry the weight on his own and man…slow motion train wreck on this night. I think this show is the musical equivalent of rubbernecking ‘cause you just can’t turn away you are drawn like a moth to the flame to hear Tyler royally butcher a rock and roll show. Audience 8.5 -This is one of those tapes that originated from a well-known local taper who produced some of the BEST stealth audience recordings of the decade but had to start somewhere, and that somewhere was not always as spectacular. The drums, specifically the cymbals, sound all washed out and annoying, even with careful remastering the effect is still present but much more bearable and in fact allows, finally, the true fan to actually appreciate this tape. Audience 8.8 - This show finally comes to light after decades and it’s surprisingly good. It’s extremely insistent and powerful sounding with guitars really up front and vocals thankfully pretty nicely mixed in as well. Radio Broadcasts 9.4/9.1 - Overall quality is excellent with a couple of these sounding a little dated but nevertheless the quality of the content combined with broadcast over the air quality (never mind how many decades ago) I think this holds up quite well. Broadcasts 8.8/9.4 - A little variation depending on the source of the recording in question (all fully annotated in the notes), what you get here is a collection of broadcasts over the air during 1969 and 1970 when music was in full change mode and experimentation and blending of genres was all the rage. Blodwyn Pig certainly has to be included in that product description with their jazz-tinged hard rock akin to Jethro Tull without flute (substitute sax instead). Makes sense, since Mick Abrahams helped define Tull’s sound in the beginning days. This is great stuff though and is HIGHLY recommended. Audience 8.9 - A nice recording job in that you really hear the music as clear as can be but also some atmosphere to let you know where you are at. It’s surprising really to hear how an amateur audience tape from ’74 can feature such nice depth, this is not a brittle or thin recording, there’s some meat to this one. Nice! Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to be, if I had to guess, somewhere mid crowd but manages to bring you closer to the action. Great separation of instruments and a clear capture with zero tape noise so you can almost hear the pot smoke swirling above your head ha ha! But, this is quite good, and mesmerizing, so have a great trip as you put your time machine headphones on and set it to Seattle in ’76. Audience 9.1 - God bless the tapers for this one! What a great show it is, and really I can’t recommend it highly enough because it’s TOTALLY immersive, I mean, sure it’s not 100% perfect but in a way it’s as good as you would hope. It’s a fun experience to hear this man just at the top of his game like this with a band that doesn’t miss a thing, ever. Various Sources 8.5/10 - So this is, as the title suggests, a collection of recordings made during this tour but the kicker is that the songs are all ones that were one-off’s (with a couple of exceptions). I found that even the worst track (the final track in the set) was not as bad as they made it seem in the liner notes. Still, when compared to some of the truly outstanding ones in the set, yes maybe it really paled in comparison but there’s only two “marginal” tracks here and they aren’t totally abhorrent. This was a very interesting listen for me personally. Audience 9.7 - Contrary to what you initially would have thought about Prince audience recordings, that the people there to see him aren’t exactly the type you would think would be overly concerned about getting an excellent capture…sure I am profiling here but it’s true - you expect this crowd is mainly there to bump and grind with each other and party like it’s 1999 or something. Now, I have to say after listening to many Prince audience recordings I come away as being impressed for the most part. This tape confirms what I now believe, that Prince bootleggers actually give a shit about the quality of the sound recordings they make. I LOVE the sound and feel of this tape…hands down I put this up against ANY soundboard you want to throw at me. This has ELECTRICITY and you don’t get that out of line recordings. Audience 9.4 - A wonderful, warm, full bodied recording that beckons you in from the first note. Say what you will about Rod Stewart but his voice works with this stuff, and even here in 1982 as long as you can’t see him you can appreciate the rock and roll pedigree he brings to the stage. Yeah, I was rather turned off by his image for quite some time, but hearing him live you just find a way to look past that. Audience 8.7 - I had a hard time determining whether it was the recording or the PA that caused this tape to fall below the usually excellent quality recordings coming out of the Inglewood Forum around this same time. It’s not terrible; the main issue was an overcrowding of the middle bandwidth. So you get plenty of bottom end and soaring high end (where most guitar leads and vocals, and yes, cymbals are clear) but a lack of separation in that crucial middle. That leaves us with a tape clearly made on decent gear, somewhere in the middle of the venue it sounds like, and likely a master source (zero tape noise), but just not delivering the kind of clarity you would want when you are trying to hear the magical guitar interplay, especially Joe Walsh who just has his own musicality that perks your ears up. Still, a good tape that is worthy of exploration and much appreciated being from that wonderful line-up that featured perennial fave Joe Walsh. Audience 8.8 - This came as a total surprise as I never knew it existed…and man, I gotta tell ya this is f’kin AWESOME! This is a band that is crucial to the burgeoning British punk movement but they owe more to the MC5 than the Sex Pistols. This one off show features the band going under the moniker The Doomed because they have a certain Lemmy Kilmister on bass. What a high energy, totally wild and crazy fun gig too! Good sound quality, thankfully! Great setlist with a nice handful of covers that highlight their influences (they even do Silver Machine from Hawkwind!).
