• Audience 8.8 - I can’t believe it was 32 years ago I attended, and recorded, this concert. It was my birthday present, although this actually went down one day before my b-day. It’s weird because Joe also sang “Birthday” the classic Beatles song (and it wasn’t for me although I imagined that it was ha ha!). This recording is only now being made available, and it sounds great and just how I remember it, with Joe being very animated and playing lots of numbers not normally played, and telling funny stories. It was a great night, I had a blast. • Soundboard 9.4 - Both shows exceptional quality, and performances are pretty exemplary. In fact, during the introduction to the Buffalo show a point is made regarding the last performance there at the venue that it was not their best due to an illness with a band member and that this show would be no such thing. I guess they wanted to make a clear statement. Mahavishnu Orchestra 1973-01-27 Century Theater, Buffalo, NY Disc 1 001. Greetings>Moments of Silence 002. Birds of Fire 003. Open Country Joy 004. • Soundboard 9.6 - This tour was well documented with a plethora of expertly recorded board tapes. This is no exception, the quality, both in terms of sound and mix, is worthy of official release. Then there is the other measure of greatness – performance. Well, it’s Santana at their creative peak, where everything came together and they were riding the crest of a wave…which lasted a good long time. • Audience 9.4 - Beautiful and well balanced, this taper was well known to have produced consistently high quality work in the area taping a variety of concerts big and small. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. This is one of the only extant live recordings of Big Star playing in the ‘70s that has not been officially released. • Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential?  It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. • Audience 8.3 - Don’t let the rating fool you, this is an exciting tape! What lowers the rating is just a non-biased appraisal of the sonic limitations of the tape which is mainly the upper end distortion due to volume. It’s a small club and a loud band, and probably a consumer grade cassette recorder…but, it’s actually not that bad and delivers a real exciting vibe.  I can tell you this for sure – you will be sucked into this recording and will completely get it, it’s a charming document of a long forgotten time and place.  I got that melancholic feeling during the song “Last Thing On My Mind”. • Audience 9.2 - All three shows are recorded with high end gear, with a respectful audience – and the results are decidedly excellent. It’s a joy to listen to these shows, back to back, and just marvel at the grandiosity on display. • Soundboard 9.4 - A very cool, immediate and high impact sound and vibe…and the band, My God! Not all of their shows had that insane intensity and sharpness…sometimes they wandered and lost focus but not here…no way.  This…is…amazing!  Play this for your kids’ friends when they try to impress you with some new flavor of the month band they are into. • Soundboard 9.4 - Minor hiss present in quiet passages but does not impact any music. This is a great show, impressive in every regard especially the incendiary guitar work by unheralded master Daryl Stuermer. Many people were first introduced to Ponty through this album, Imaginary Voyage, and it’s on full display here in a live setting. EXCELLENT!! • Audience 8.3 - This recording has you right in the thick of things. Equally enjoying both the electric excitement of the Kinks and the amazing responses from the audience.  Quality is a little above average but the instruments are clear and not muddy. The vocals are very clear, which is important because Ray commands the show. This show has been written about, and not just for the incident involving Ray falling into the amps during Apeman. One to remember! The Kinks Philharmonic Hall, New York, NY March 30, 1971 Band line-up (personnel : May 1970 - November 1976) Ray Davies - lead vocals, rhythm guitar Dave Davies - lead guitar, backup vocals John Dalton - bass guitar, backup vocals Mick Avory - drums, percussion John Gosling - keyboards Total Time = 73:37 Set list 01 Intro 02 Till the End of the Day 03 Brainwashed 04 You're Looking Fine 05 Apeman 06 Waterloo Sunset 07 Sunny Afternoon 08 Give My Love To Rose 09 Get Back In Line 10 A Pub With No Beer 11 Lola 12 Louise -- tape flip -- 13 Big Sky 14 Milk Cow Blues 15 See My Friends 16 Powerman 17 One Night With You 18 You Are My Sunshine 19 You Really Got Me 20 All Day & All of the Night 21 Top of the Pops The Kinks play at Lincoln Center's prestigious Philharmonic Hall (later renamed Avery Fisher Hall). In contrast to the elegance of the hall, Ray Davies' spontaneous, campy, outrageous, sometimes disoriented performance elicits a huge crowd response. When he falls into a bank of amplifiers (brother Dave kindly steps aside when he sees Ray toppling), members of the audience leap on stage to finish the song "Apeman" for Ray. By all accounts it is a night to remember.
