  • Radio Broadcast 8.8 - This is most definitely a broadcast although when it starts you may confuse it for a very good audience tape. The tape itself that was made from the broadcast is a little aged it seems but holds up pretty well. It’s a solid old tape, just could use a little brightening up. • Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. • Studio Quality 9.4 - I admit I never was a fan, but being a music collector I ended up discovering a few things I’d missed and this is one. While I am still not the biggest Morrissey fan, I think he certainly fits with this style and let’s admit it these songs are all quite good. The Smiths Demos & Outtakes 01 -Reel Around The Fountain (July 1983, Troy Tate final mix) 02 -The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (October 1983, John Porter monitor mix) 03 -This Night Has Opened My Eyes (June 1984, unreleased studio recording) 04 -Rusholme Ruffians (July 1984, John Porter first take) 05 -I Misses You (December 1984, instrumental) 06 -There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (September 1985, early take) 07 -The Queen Is Dead (Fall 1985, original unedited version) 08 -Frankly, Mr Shankly (November 1985, Stephen Street "trumpets" recording) 09 -Ask (9 June 1986, probable first-ever take) 10 -Is It Really So Strange? ( June 1986, original unreleased studio recording) 11 -Shoplifters Of The World Unite (December 1986, instrumental) 12 -Sheila Take A Bow (January 1987, John Porter original version) 13 -Girlfriend In A Coma (January 1987, early take) 14 -Death Of A Disco Dancer (April 1987, first take) 15 -Paint A Vulgar Picture (April 1987, early take) 16 -Heavy Track (April 1987, instrumental)
  • Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so?  I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. • Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you?  …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Man! IRON MAIDEN Market Hall Carlisle England, UK May 20th, 1980 01. Prowler (4:09) 02. Remember Tomorrow (5:52) 03. Killers (5:09) 04. Running Free (3:28) 05. Another Life (inc. • Soundboard 9.1/Audience 8.8 - An incomplete board tape that is completed by a very decent audience (thank goodness!) to present a great gig by a great band. • Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! • Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!!
