• Audience 9.3 - Hard to dispute the excellence of this recording. The only downside is that not only does it capture the happenings on stage extremely well, it also captures the audience close to the mic…but, that seems to add excitement so we let it slide.
  • Audience 9.5 - Technically speaking, you could argue with my rating, but a rating must not only represent sonic clarity but also overall enjoyability of a show/recording. This one rates as high as I can allow for both excellence and all the other aspects of what makes a tape really great.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. I mean, they play a song called “Prince Of The Punks” so what does that tell you? • Audience 8.8 - A fantastic open reel recording that features a very lively and clear sound. Guitar tones are lovely, vocals very present, and a cheerful vibe throughout. Fantastic! • Soundboard 9.3 - This is an average of the rating that I confidently can say spans the entire set. There is some minor variance in the first disc being that is taken from four different sources, but consistently good. The exact date of the last disc (the rehearsals) is unknown but believed to be ’93 although people say it can be as early as 1989 also. I’ll let the experts decide but I have gone with the general wisdom of it being from ’93. • Audience 8.5/8.4 - Both of these recordings are very good in not only the general fidelity but they also seem to be low gen. They are both clear and not muddy, although one is slightly clearer in the middle frequency. It seems as though these shows have been worked on with some audio tools, but with a light touch, it is greatly appreciated by these ears!  Both shows are very worthwhile, and being the period before the more extravagant sets, kind of easier to sit through. • Soundboard 8.8 - The live mix settles in during the first song and sounds pretty good, and manages to capture some of the hall atmosphere too, which is nice.
  • Soundboard 9.6 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, this is a pre-FM tape source. They say this is one of the best live Kinks show ever. Debatable, but yeah it’s pretty damn good.   The Kinks live Winterland, San Francisco 1977.02.19 PRE-FM Recording - KSAN Master Reel (except tracks 1, 21 & 22 from FM broadcast) Disc 1 01 - You Really Got Me (Intro) 02 - One Of The Survivors 03 - Sleepwalker 04 - Rush Hour Blues 05 - You Make It All Worthwhile/Ordinary People/Everybody's A Star 06 – Lola(singalong)/Banana Boat Song 07 - A Well Respected Man 08 - Sunny Afternoon 09 - Waterloo Sunset 10 - Celluloid Heroes 11 - Schooldays 12 - Schooldays(reprise)/The Hard Way 13 – Education   Disc 2 14 - Brother 15 - Stormy Sky 16 - Life Goes On 17 - Full Moon 18 - Lola 19 - Alcohol 20 - You Really Got Me/All Day All Of the Night 21 - Life On the Road 22 – Victoria   Total Time = 112:45   Ray Davies - guitar, vocals Dave Davies - lead guitar, vocals Andy Pyle - bass John Gosling - piano, keyboards Mick Avory - drums Nick Newell - sax Debbie Doss - background vocals Shirley Roden - background vocals
  • Audience 8.4 - A decent old (and by old I mean it sounds…old) tape that doesn’t have extreme highs or lows but is pretty consistent and clear enough to hear everything. The highlight to any Kinks tape of this vintage is the set list, they had some of their best songs ever and were playing all of them. Later set lists rarely visited Arthur material (there were some obligatory songs played at times) but here you get a heaping helping. THE KINKS Pierce College Woodland Hills, CA. • Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. I could not stop playing this once I started…I was on board for the whole ride and will do it again! THE KNACK THE FORUM INGLEWOOD, CA 1980-03-30 01. Baby Talks Dirty 02. Your Number Or Your Name 03. • Audience 8.3 - Don’t let the rating fool you, this is an exciting tape! What lowers the rating is just a non-biased appraisal of the sonic limitations of the tape which is mainly the upper end distortion due to volume. It’s a small club and a loud band, and probably a consumer grade cassette recorder…but, it’s actually not that bad and delivers a real exciting vibe.  I can tell you this for sure – you will be sucked into this recording and will completely get it, it’s a charming document of a long forgotten time and place.  I got that melancholic feeling during the song “Last Thing On My Mind”. • Audience 7.1 - A little noisy and squeezed into the middle, but I hear everything on the stage happening, very kinetically I might add!
  • Pro FM Broadcast 9.2 - Both sets are great, both in performance and sound quality.  Really great musicianship! I also found myself really enjoying the songs, since I was only very familiar with their evergreen hit “Green Grass and High Tides”.  I saw these guys in 1980 and they were great but I was so young I just can’t remember the songs.
