Audience 8.0 - Typical big rock sound. I like the Palo Alto show here, it’s the stronger of the two as far as clarity, but the San Francisco show sounds somewhat meatier ~ it’s a trade off. -
Soundboard 9.6 - Superb recording that delights the senses in every way with precision attack. The distortion this band uses does not in any way mask imperfection as so many other bands use it for, in fact the band is unbelievably tight, and the mix highlights each of them in a very harmonious way but especially tantalizing is the bass sound and placement in the mix. You'd expect, and even almost prefer that the vocals be the star of the show but they are not particularly highlighted as good as they are. The guitar solos are breathtaking, and each player is panned to one side in a non-synthetic stereo sound-field giving the listener a sense of space, like natural surround sound. Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. Audience 9.3 - This is a rock and roll show the way it used to be..and I mean WAY used to be! So the experience is well worth checking out especially because this tape captured lightning in a bottle in a very good way. Atmosphere combined with great sound you cannot go wrong here. Radio Broadcast 8.7 - A little generation tape hiss but a good and clear, solid broadcast with excellent instrument sound separation. The band is a hybrid jazz/prog and rock with certain influence by Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, PFM, and Gentle Giant. -
Audience 9.5 - This may be a pro audience recording because it has some of the hallmarks of it being managed by someone other than a concert goer. Not saying 100% certain, but it’s just too good and clean, and free of interference but who knows maybe it’s just a really astute taper? All I know is that this material and this quality make for a real revelation for people like me who glossed over the albums. Damn good stuff, with a stellar cast of characters. Same with the San Francisco 1977 tape which I include in this rating but is a soundboard…similar stellar sound quality maybe 9.6 but has a little more hiss present. Still, it is EXCELLENT! Soundboard 9.2 - A nice and tight sound with excellent presence and tone on guitar, clear up front vocals, and nice placement of bass and drums just off to one side and behind adding to the stereo effect. Now, I may be mistaken about this being a board tape or not, for me the audience might be the clue here. I hear them in the background as if they were bleeding into an onstage or close mic from stage front. That being sad a competent and devoted taper may have made this capture and if that is true, that person should receive a medal of commendation! Worth 1980 Audience 9.4 - This recording is hard to definitely call an audience tape because it’s either really close to the main P.A. without much audience interference but the best guess here is that the mic is placed right in from of the P.A. and because of that the sound is direct and electrifying. It’s a terrific recording actually. CD Two - Lubbock 1980 Audience 8.8 - This recording is very decent and inside a small venue so it gets a little raucous at times but overall it’s a nice, dirty little gem. Audience 8.8 - Captured live at his home away from home, Fitzgerald’s Club in Houston, this is perhaps one of the very best small club gigs ever recorded. It has a certain vibe, perhaps that is why this show has a very special place in the hearts of SRV collectors. -
Soundboard 9.4 - After the sound mix gets sorted out, and the vocals are brought up in the mix, this recording really takes off and blossoms beautifully. Deep rich bass, and a nice overall blend of the drums while highlighting the guitar. A lovely live document. Studio and Live - Excellent source material used, especially the studio stuff. The June 10, 1979 performance is perhaps the weakest tape here but one can still hear all the action from the stage even if it sounds a little far back. Fans consider the Accolades set to be a classic piece, it’s easy to hear why. -
Audience 9.6 - Exciting and full bodied, this is what I want from any recording from the modern era…there’s no excuse for a sub-par bootleg post 1980 in my opinion. PA’s were better, recording gear better (that may be subjective), but the point is it SHOULD sound great from 1991 and this does – and not only that but the band JAMS!

Fillmore East 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - Clear although not bristling with perfection is a very good early period SMB recording Honolulu 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - A tape that needs one song to dial in the live mix but then gets much better. Still, it’s very good but not sparkling and bright…just good enough to rank pretty high in the category of the formative Steve Miller anthology of concert tapes. San Rafael 1970 Soundboard 9.1 - This is a really nice recording that exemplifies why it is so cool to hear tapes of an artists’ earlier career works before they made it to the big time. This certainly shows the vulnerability and the possibility at the same time. An artist who is still not 100% convincing but clearly has the tool set necessary to advance…and advance he did!
