This set was assembled with both the hardcore collector and casual collector in mind. The variety of material that will appeal to longtime Yes collectors is the immediate standout feature, aside from the beautiful design of the canister itself. Now, let this be the one and only disclaimer: The inclusion of the Dallas 1972 show, even though it may be considered below the high standards set by collectors of this venerable progressive rock band, was too important to not acknowledge here because, as you know, we lost Alan White not that long ago and the Dallas '72 gig was his first with the band. It's also kind of interesting to hear how well he did with only a couple of days to learn the challenging material. Audience 9.3 - Legendary Mike “The Mic” Millard recording and what a sparkling one it is. It’s hard to place Yes’s music into any sort of time frame because it is timeless, therefore a good 1991 show is just as “good” as a 1971 show, meaning as you listen you realize there’s no real difference in that the 1991 show might as well be the band during any time frame because it’s just as good. Audience 9.5 - This may be a pro audience recording because it has some of the hallmarks of it being managed by someone other than a concert goer. Not saying 100% certain, but it’s just too good and clean, and free of interference but who knows maybe it’s just a really astute taper? All I know is that this material and this quality make for a real revelation for people like me who glossed over the albums. Damn good stuff, with a stellar cast of characters. Same with the San Francisco 1977 tape which I include in this rating but is a soundboard…similar stellar sound quality maybe 9.6 but has a little more hiss present. Still, it is EXCELLENT! Audience 8.6 - A resurrected gem of a show, not killer sound as one might expect but it’s definitely not garbage. I started playing it and could not stop. It’s just one of those things that if you understand you are listening to something that should not exist in the first place, that sounds reasonably good given the time and circumstances, and delivers in every way for performance and historical accuracy (live performance being about the most realistic snapshot of a particular performer at that time) well then you will appreciate what this is. Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. Stockholm 1983 Audience 8.9 - This tape starts off kind of average and slowly but surely keeps getting better until what we have is a very good tape of a really good show. As most already know, any good tape of this line up is VERY welcome as it showcases what I consider a great band – I did not say a great Black Sabbath because you can’t get away from Ian’s obvious vocal inflections that inevitably recall his old band. That being said if you listen to this without that bias you realize how good this BAND was in 1983. Paris 1983 Soundboard 9.1 - A most welcomed thing amongst Black Sabbath collectors without question is this board tape with the Ian Gillan line up. I love the material they recorded on Born Again, this is almost the logical progression from Technical Ecstasy, to me anyway. The music is more ideally suited to Ian Gillan’s vocals than it would have been to Ronnie James Dio and I think that is obvious. Black Sabbath Quebec City 1983 Audience 8.9 - I like this tape because you really get to hear and appreciate what the bass is all about in Sabbath and it is here in excellent detail. Everyone shines, it’s great to have this abundance of riches because this short-lived period of Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most unique sounding. Studio Quality 9.7 - Here is Prince’s rookie card! Pro Audience 9.3 - What is a pro audience recording exactly? This right here. In other words it was set up from the start to be done to the highest standards. These concerts were highly promoted and a lot of media exists including paper goods, photographs, and yes, recordings. This also includes the pre-show gospel songs (disc 3). Personally, I rather enjoy Bob’s “religious” period as I find the songs and performances on a very high level and his singing is the best of his career (imho). I found this recordings to be adequate to hear what they were like in 1983, and they were good, but the recording does not highlight the vocals, rather on guitar and drums which is fine but I love this band’s vocal acrobatics and want them front and center. Audience 9.4 -A fierce sounding tape with major emphasis on Tony, and man, you can hear every nuance of the guitar and it is literally spine-tingling…but at the expense of Ronnie’s vocals. Not to worry too much, I mean, it’s just a badass recording you tend to overlook that. This is well worth listening to I highly recommend it. Levittown 1981 FM Broadcast 9.3 - Crisp and nicely mixed for broadcast this recording does not suffer from any degradation or compression, it’s wonderful! London 1984 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Excellent quality recording with some atmosphere to give you a sense of space, so not what I would call a direct to board feed, it was recorded and mixed for air and has that distinct feel to it.
