• Audience 9.7 - Each and every one of these recordings is spotless. Taper was dedicated to getting the absolute best position, with superb gear, and above all without blemish. The results are spectacular!  Gilmour is in excellent form, so this adds to the listening experience tremendously and it's quite hard to stop once you press play. So sit back and strap yourself in to a long journey through past and present in a most luxuriating way. Again - it sounds like the same taper throughout the entire 6 night stand. • Audience 9.0 - I have to say this is a very good recording if your preference is to really be able to make out the vocals and to hear every nuance of the lead guitar possible. In fact, the sonics tend to favor the upper mid-range and highs, to the extent that I was not enthusiastic about the sound of the snare drum here...but that just shows you how articulate that range is. Is it screechy then? No, it's not that this is chirpy or screechy high at all, but one may want to play with the EQ to bring up more low end maybe...because to my ears that is what it needs. Otherwise, again, this is a VERY clear, articulate (especially upper mid and highs) recording. Black Sabbath Mid-Hudson Civic Center Poughkeepsie,NY. USA 31 May 1989 Disc 1 101. • Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man!  NOTE:  Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs. • Soundboard 9.2 - Some fiddling at the board to dial in the mix starts this recording, so bear with it because it does get better. This board is not as smooth and sparkling as the one on Volume 1, but it still kicks ass all day long. Ted Nugent Mississippi Coast Coliseum Biloxi, MS January 10th 1979 Disc 1 1. • Audience 8.8 - This is one of those kind of tapes that sound realistic. That doesn't mean to say it sounds lifelike, because your ears hear in hi-fidelity and detect all the nuance (as long as the volume isn't earsplittingly loud). This tape just has that live feel to it. Rory GALLAGHER Pavillon Baltard Nogent sur Marne, France January 25th, 1980 DISC 1 01. Intro + tuning 02. Follow Me 03. Shin Kicker 04. Off The Handle 05. • Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. This set list is also great, so I forgive the imperfections and applaud the mastering efforts. STRYPER Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim, California 3.15.85 Disc 1 01. intro 02. Loud 'N' Clear 03. • Audience 8.7 - Small club feel, and a good tape to learn what this band was about, since there's a strange sort of "Spinal Tap" mysticism about them that has endured. The old recording here sounds kind of dated, and there's a few occasional sonic oddities that pop up now and again (like gentle phasing) but thankfully these are short-lived. The tape here is not muddy or screechy, it is focused primarily on guitars and vocals in the mix, so season to taste with your EQ if you want to roll in some added low end. It is a very good tape and fun to listen to. ANVIL Golden Mask Bar Arvida,Quebec, CAN. 1981 Disc 1 01. School Love 02. Steamin' 03. 666 04. Flyin' Cryin' 05. I Want You Both (With Me) 06. • Audience 8.8 - A very pleasant, easy on the ears recording. There's a lot of positive atmosphere and some mild audience participation but this is definitely one you can get into. • Audience 8.7 - A recording that, while it does not open up to reveal a heck of a lot of depth, it is clear and present, with thump and some big arena bombast. The vocals do not appear up front in the mix, and low end is not highly defined although very present in a "feel" sense, the entirety of the sound can be roundly enjoyed though, as the relative clarity and presence of the band give this old tape credibility in the collector world. • Soundboard 9.4 - After the sound mix gets sorted out, and the vocals are brought up in the mix, this recording really takes off and blossoms beautifully. Deep rich bass, and a nice overall blend of the drums while highlighting the guitar. A lovely live document. • Audience 8.8 - This here is a very nice tape! It also shows the band firing on all four cylinders (yes, I am afraid this is only a 4 banger but this engine puts out more horsepower than a 12 cylinder Lambo!). • Soundboard 9.6 - There's not much better than having these early Ghost board tapes. • London Audience 8.7 - A decent recording that remains consistent throughout. Everything comes through, albeit not with a lot of detailed anything, just good overall clarity and decent mix. I would commend the taper because I know he had to have battled with the Hammersmith Odeon acoustics, loud audience, louder band, and consumer grade gear and yet still managed a good capture. Brussels Audience 8.9 - This is a strong recording and finds the band performing at a very high level. Good sound balance, and though you get a sense of the sheer volume, it does not stress the tape.
