FM Broadcast 9.1 (Seattle) and Audience 8.3 (Fresno) - Two very cool shows with the first one taking the cake for fidelity but the second one is a stomper. It is pretty clear with guitar being very good and loud (screaming in fact!) but not at the expense of everything else. It’s lacking maybe some lower end definition and separation of instruments during their jamming parts (might lose some of the drums in there, and keyboards are absent sometimes) but these are not going to bother you when you start listening to this gig because it’s a thriller. Soundboard 9.4 - Both shows exceptional quality, and performances are pretty exemplary. In fact, during the introduction to the Buffalo show a point is made regarding the last performance there at the venue that it was not their best due to an illness with a band member and that this show would be no such thing. Soundboard 9.4 - Yes it is CDB but it’s also a whole lot more. Since 1974 they hosted the Volunteer Jam and invited their friends and fellow “southern” rock bands including this legendary get together (famous for being the first on-stage appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash). Sound is taken from what sounds like a couple of different sources but it’s all consistently great. January 13, 1979 Volunteer Jam V was held at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. This Jam marked the return of Lynyrd Skynyrd to the stage for the first time since the '77 plane crash, and the CDB gave the first live performance of a song that would catapult the band to superstardom, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Special guests also included Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle from the Marshall Tucker Band, Dobie Gray, The Winters Brothers Band, The Henry Paul Band, Link Wray, John Prine,Papa John Creach, Carl Perkins, and Jim Owen. Audience 8.4 - A fine document albeit not without limitations. Sound is generally clear, the mix is heavily in favor of Keith’s rhythm guitar, although Mick Taylor is not absent. Mick Jagger is audible, not clearly, but he is audible. Bass sounds pretty good, Charlie is there too but not distinctly. It’s not muddy, really, it’s not close, it’s not far – this is a very good “average” tape if that makes any sense. The Seattle portion (included in this set) is maybe in the 8.7 range, this source being a bit better than the other version we offer here. BTW I think the Midnight Rambler version here is one of the best of the tour. Audience 8.4 and Audience 8.2 - Both performances showcase a confident Jeff Beck, but in terms of sound quality the London show is clearer and bass has less boom so you can really dial in to the playing. The Manchester show is not that bad but it is a bit murkier, slightly more dynamic in the vocal dept. and I think the London show edges it out in performance quality as well. Doesn’t mean you will ignore it, just that you will favor the London gig, in fact the London show is a real contender to be in all Jeff Beck fans’ collections. Beck, Bogert, & Appice .... Audience - 9.5, 8.5, 8.8 We start with a real cracker of a tape, recorded close up with excellent gear…hard to put this down it is extremely captivating. Then we have a first – the first gig in Europe by the band, and it is a very good tape but we are going to feel the difference between this and the first disc. It’s not got the dynamics of the ’77, but it is considered a very good tape nonetheless. The final disc contains a very good recording with plenty of atmosphere and some dynamics, maybe a touch of clutter in a very specific mid band frequency but it is minor to my ears. It’s a real enjoyable tape! Audience 8.3 - Both shows recorded by same taper so sound quality consistent throughout. This is another one of those “right in the middle of the action” tapes, where literally you sense the surroundings, and settle yourself in to what will be a wild night of rock and roll music. Quality is decent, without too much in the way of dynamics, but also this is not a muddy, crappy recording, it’s just not showcasing a wide range of tones. Audience 9.0 - Nice and clear, with a sharply defined and articulate high end of the spectrum. During full band loud jam sections I find the guitar too low in the mix, but just fine in most of the sections where the overall band intensity is not as high (like during Zoot Allures, for instance). Overall it’s quite a tour de force this show – and brilliant on point guitar pyrotechnics abound. Audience 9.7 - Superb in just about every category, and literally surpasses whatever kind of “perfection” you may imagine you get with a board tape. This is how one should relive a live concert, by listening to a tape made by guys who used excellent gear, sat in the best spot, and were respectful the whole show (in fact the whole audience is). Vibrant, clear, flawless mix, great atmosphere…what else could make this better? Even the performance is amazing, with great special guests, it’s one for the collection for sure. MUST HAVE!! Audience 8.3/8.4/8.8 - When listening to the first two discs, it would be easy to dismiss them right away as being inferior, but I encourage the listener to stick with them for a while. The first disc is not bad, the sound is loud and narrow but guitars and vocals are clear and extremely direct! That means you get to actually hear it, and it’s an early period gig in a small venue and these are few and far between. The second disc is a little further from the stage, but I get the music pretty well if somewhat noisily. Here the audio is reasonably balanced too, so drums very much there, as is guitar and vocals. I actually got into it once I adjusted. The third disc is the best of the three, with clarity and balance, and even some dynamic range. You can increase the volume and not damage your ear drums. All three discs are above average performances too, with the third disc being among the very best ever. A worthwhile collection here. This is the band's first platinum award, as they have now sold over a million copies of Shout At The Devil. When Tommy walks into his condo with his gold and platinum awards for the first time after the tour, his girlfriend Candice throws a plate at him smashing the glass frame of his gold award, after she becomes jealous over a photo she found of Tommy with some girl. Nikki takes his awards with him to the island of Nantucket, MA where he plans on meeting some girls, one of them actress Demi Moore who is working on the movie set of One Crazy Summer. Demi also shared a similar childhood to Nikki in many ways, with her father leaving before she was born, then being around drinking, arguing and beatings, and moving home a ridiculous amount of times. She greets Nikki as the prop plane lands, who in a wasted state, falls down the plane's steps onto the tarmac, smashing a bottle of Jack Daniels from his hand while his awards hit him in the head. Having been through Alcoholics Anonymous herself, Demi suggests the program to Nikki, who learns of it for the first time. -
Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. Landover 1973 Soundboard 9.3 - A solid recording that was broadcast over the air and features a nice wide stereo mix showing detail in the bass and crisp, crunchy guitar not to mention having another well recorded Keith Moon experience…and of course Roger is in fine form (when is he not?). Wembley 1975 Audience 8.5 - Not horrible, the music is all here in pretty clear form (I get a good picture of drums thankfully), but the highlight is the stage banter where you get a lot of stuff that will entertain for sure. I am happy say that the recording does also get better, so that once you are firmly ensconced in your listening chair you will start to get into this one more and more.
