• Studio Quality 9.5 - The average rating here in the mid 9.0’s because except for the occasional minor hiss, this material consists of professionally recorded, live in studio sessions. Good to have it all in a well constructed collection like this.

  • Audience 8.9 - This is what I consider the best audience tape from the Somewhere In Time Tour. It’s got loads of atmosphere but not at the expense of the “directness” of the PA to the mic. It’s a realistic sound, this tape replicates exactly what your ears heard coming out of the PA at this show…without artifacts to detract. Get this!

  • St. Austell 1980 Audience 8.4 - In the pantheon of early Maiden live recordings this one is far from the worst, in fact I would say it’s worth a good listen because one thing is a grimy, muddy old tape and another is a relatively good tape that is NOT muddy but maybe does not have a wide dynamic range…and I’ll take the latter every time.

Reading 1980 Soundboard 9.4 - A short but awesome recording that every Iron Maiden fan should have.

  • Radio Broadcast 9.2 - Great gig here, in really nice quality with just very minor underlying signal noise (so you know it’s a radio broadcast). But the show itself is a barn burner!

  • Audience 9.3 - Excellent, clean, and good concert hall vibe on this one. It’s Japan, and the crowd has a penchant to clap during some songs but the recording mitigates it to the point you barely even notice. My guess is that the mics were raised over the crowd in order to achieve that.

  • Los Angeles 1972 FM Broadcast 9.0 - This is a fine tape for the vintage, sounding maybe a little “dated” after all it’s older than most of the people who plan on listening to it!  But, if you remember the band like it was yesterday, expect to be transported back in time with this show.

Seattle 1973 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, that brightens up as it goes and becomes a real charmer. The separation of instruments is really good, and that nice, tight, reverb after drum hits gives you a good sense of the hall.

  • Stockholm 1975 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Clear and bright, the only thing my ears notice that could detract is the slight overcrowding in the upper mid frequency but typically that only seems to happen when there’s furious on stage jamming (which I guess when it is this band, that is a lot), but this is minor, this is a great recording and a pleasure to listen to!

Millersville 1975 Audience 8.9 - This is a hot tape! Maybe lacks a little mid-band clarity, but this, again, is kind of being nitpicky seeing as how there’s a lot of soundboard tapes of this band (not so much from ’75 though). This show has seen very little circulation, if any at all, but it deserves to be in every collection and thankfully it is presented here alongside another great sounding show. Yes!

  • Pinkpop 1984 Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent, crystal clear and surely one helluva great performance make this probably a must have for fans.

Dublin 1985 Audience 8.8 - A really good and spacey recording loaded with crowd ambience, as guitars and synths float just overhead. Drums sound pretty tight here, and vocals are perhaps the most prominent next to keys. Good one!

  • FM Broadcast 9.3 - This recording is a little hot, it’s slightly overloaded mainly in the upper mid to high band to the point of slight sizzle on the cymbals…but because it’s so clean overall, with good mid and low end, that seems to be mitigated as the ears adjust. So, it’s great, yes a fine FM broadcast, but in the pantheon of FM broadcasts maybe the engineer got a little excited…OR maybe it’s not the case but more a situation where, when taping from a radio source, you sometimes get artifacts (might be static interference, might be signal compression, might be a whole range of things) and here you have some in the form of slightly overloaded high end.  Don’t let it dissuade you though…it’s still great stuff.

  • Telluride 1978 FM Broadcast 9.2 - A little hit and miss on the live mix, where sometimes I don’t get some of the background instruments associated with the synth or whatever is happening back there…but I could be wrong about that, I mean it is rather subjective whether I am hearing the mix as the band intended or if I need something personally – no matter, because this is lovely and warm, with just enough audience sound to give you a better representation of the liveness of the recorded gig. I need that, personally, otherwise you might as well just listen to the albums!

Boston 1978 FM Broadcast 9.7 - A very well preserved recording that features soaring instrumentation in crystal clear quality – highs are sweet and distinct and bass is warm and round. The mid tones are sublime, and your high-end system will love reproducing this recording!

  • Audience 8.5 - This is one very loud recording, and while it does not distort, it’s in need of an EQ job to tamper down some of the mid and upper mid to high band just to give it more listenability. As it is, it sounds very much like an early Iron Maiden tape…it just has that quality to it. There are very few live tapes of this outfit, so I take this with a lot of curiosity to hear what these guys were about and can forgive the fact that, while this tape falls below my own threshold of what I can tolerate more than once, it does live up to satisfying my curiosity. I find the band full of promise and potential, and I want to hear more, better quality live tapes but will start with listening to their LP release which I recently obtained.

  • Dublin 1974 Soundboard 9.4 - This is a sweet one, it’s early in the new year (a year he would tour extensively during), and he’s in the beautiful city of Dublin, possibly thinking maybe this is how he’ll kick off the ambitious tour, and he just kills it!  I would rate the recording higher but for some sizzle on the highs (cymbal crashes, etc.) that don’t hurt the tape so much as they don’t belong on a professionally made for release recording, if indeed that is what this was for. So, that being said you can still dive into this with the full knowledge that it will live up to the rating and then some!

Limerick 1972 Soundboard 8.8 - Sounds like this originates from TV or local radio and suffers from some compression limitations and occasionally drop outs due to sheer age. It’s still professionally recorded, so it’s got bones to work with and you’ll be able to get into it but because it is made for TV (or radio?) there is interruption for interviews – so you have to take this short piece for what it is. It’s filler for the excellent Dublin ’74 and it is fine in that capacity.

  • THE KINKS – New York 1978 (4CD)

    $36.49
New York 1978 Audience 9.3 - What a wild, out of control ride this is!  Not only perhaps one of the most engaging live Kinks bootleg recording (or at least in the top 5), It also may just be one of THE coolest bootleg audience recording of any band. Why? Why such praise?  It captures an intangible quality, that thing you can’t accurately describe with words…it’s a statement of sorts. We have a foundation rock band (first British wave) who have always been sort of disregarded but who refuse to pack it in, and here is why. These guys were punk before punk was a thought, and here they are a decade and change removed from their 60’s heyday, playing the birth place of US punk and they STILL can out punk the punks. Brilliant! Magical. A MUST! Buffalo 1978 Audience 8.7 - A very clear recording, good solid mid range and leaning toward emphasis on the high end which gives cymbals the little bit of crispiness that makes them heard and not washed out. Drums are highlighted and have a great sound too.
