Delaware 1985 Soundboard 9.3 Nice to hear this period of Trower with a good, punchy board tape that does present a minimal amount of hiss (evident between songs) but other than that not much to complain about. W. Hollywood 1990 Soundboard 9.2 Technically speaking this would rate much higher as it is what one would call a “pristine” board tape. Yes it sounds crystal clear and Robin is literally singing in your ear (a bit much perhaps), but the rating reflects what I personally consider to be a downside of board tapes…the lack of atmosphere and reliance on perfect mix. This was probably mixed for the benefit of what was coming from the stage and not for the sake of the recording being made. It’s a reference tape is what it is. Contrast this to the next show in the set and you’ll begin to understand why I always say a great audience tape beats a board tape. Karlsruhe 2009 Audience 9.5 This show gets a stellar rating because while it is not technically a superior recording (mainly due to the very slight amount of overdrive) it represents most of what I love about great audience recordings. This recording captures the lightning into a bottle so to speak. The fact that there is just a slight bit of overdriven energy (for lack of a more technical term) or lets call it “saturation” for the sake of the audiophiles out there – either way the point is that this recording will get more repeat plays than the board tapes in this set. Milwaukee 1980 FM Broadcast 8.7 - This was broadcast, the question is, was it recorded professionally and did it sound like this when it was aired? Probably it did not sound like this – because this is below the threshold for what is acceptable for a legitimately broadcast live performance which means it is probably an off-air tape that has suffered from degradation. That being said, it’s been re-mastered and it sounds decent enough to be included in a set which features all soundboards so that says something for it. Vancouver 1981 FM Broadcast 8.8 - This is another one of those not quite living up to radio broadcast expectations probably due to a capture off the air onto cassette tape, regardless it still sounds fine just a bit dated. A re-mastering helped considerably and that is why the show is included in this set. Dortmund 1982 Soundboard 9.1 - Sounds like a large, open air stadium and that atmosphere is preserved onto the tape. A really decent one for the collectors out there. Daytona 1984 Soundboard 9.2 - Wow, the 80’s, and the unique obsession with that (now very dated) certain drum sound that can take any song and make it “new wave” ha ha! Thankfully it’s not the case on every song otherwise I would have said skip this show, but it’s a good, well recorded one so enjoy it. Raleigh 1985 Soundboard 9.4 - Good hard panning of the guitars so that you can distinctly hear each of them as autonomous instruments. A hard rocking sound was mixed on this evening. Audience 8.6 – 8.8 - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. Four Discs of music that will melt your brain. All are either Very Good or Excellent quality, so it’s not a jarring experience to sit through all four discs, they have a certain continuity to them. I think this is a great time period of music and these guys were just on another level. It’s a fun thing to ponder, whether there are any bands that can do this sort of thing today – and the answer is “I really don’t think so”. Audience 9.0/8.5/8.7 - All four discs are very good source tapes with the first two discs being the strongest with a sound quality that sits nicely on the ears, very comfortable, albeit slightly further back in the hall than the other two discs. I think the other shows maybe feature a louder, more up front guitar sound, but at the same time are also a bit more crowded in that frequency although at no time is there distortion present. Disc 3 suffers from a little bit of the typical big sound onto little cassette recorder where it’s just not as clear as you wish but at least you can hear what is going on, and it is not what I would call muddy sounding. Disc 4 is decent in the fact that you have a clear guitar, tone is audible which is crucial when you are listening to Leslie West. All instruments audible and distinct but not rising much above a middle to upper 8 rating. All in all, I am pleased at the overall sound quality in this set seeing as how there are not many really high quality audios of this band. CD 1 - Pro 8.8 (and the best disc of this set) CD 2 - Audience 6.4 (possibly the worst of this set, but if you turn it up louder it sounds better actually. Levels are low!) CD 3 - Audience 7.2 (a big step up from previous disc, levels a little low but not so much, kind of thin, gets crowded when the band is loud.) CD 4/5 - Audience 7.7 (good stereo separation, everything is clear, a decent recording!) Audience - all shows Berlin Aud 7.2 A reasonably clear tape, Jimi vocals come through and guitar is right up front too. Drums a little buried but you get enough to know what’s going on. Enjoyable! Cologne Aud 7.0 Mono recording without much separation of instruments, guitar being the clearest here. Hamburg Aud 6.6 Very loud and distorted recording. Nuremberg Aud 6.7 Thin, with tape noise present, no dynamics, only Jimi's guitar is heard but it is heard clearly ringing out like he was the only one mic’d up!

A superbly put together set! Looks positively spectacular. The recordings are all generally pretty decent. CD 1 Audience 7.7 - CD 2 Audience 8.7 - CD 3 Soundboard 9.0 - CD 4 Audience 8.4 - CD 5 Audience 8.4 (these last two discs you MUST turn the volume up loud because the levels are low but the fidelity is decent. The louder the better, and it does NOT distort because there is a ton of headroom here to play with).

This set collects not so widely available shows of varying quality but certainly ones that fill in missing parts to a collection. CD 1 - Audience 7.4 - Actually not that bad at all, and probably one of the better ones of this set. CD 2 - Audience 7.7 - Fine recording that kind of stays in a rather crisp mode, but if I were to remaster it or want to add bass this recording is a PERFECT one because highs are so good on this, and accurate to a fault really. A decent recording that needs low end but VERY enjoyable! CD 3 - Audience 7.0 - Might be the worst of this set, but Randy is clear here on this tape, followed by Ozzy, so the priorities are at least straight! CD 4 - Audience 7.5 - Right down the middle, as far as sound-field, but it is not that hard to go ahead and appreciate this for what it is. Mediocre and at times gets really good and clear especially during softer sections of songs. CD 5 - Audience 7.3 - I would rate this higher for the fact that levels are good, and everything can be heard, but the fault is that everything is mid to upper band and gets too harsh for me. I think a good EQ would do wonders, because at least the mids and highs are there in which to round out more and even reduce in favor of low mid and low frequencies.
