Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air? If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape! It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. Audience 9.5 - If the date of this show looks familiar, it’s because she’s opening for Black Sabbath! Now, while this music is a product of its time, it is not to say that it’s not worthy of examination – I’ll be the first to say I love this stuff. First, it’s just kick ass rock and roll, with loads of hooks and even though the majority of the song structures are standard barre chord blues-based riff rock, they have put enough creativity in them to make you take notice. Ruby is best known for being stage mates with Jim Dandy in Black Oak Arkansas, but whatever she learned from him she has taken very good notes and delivers primo stadium caliber boogie. Audience 9.6 - This sound is so real, so present, and SO LOUD but thankfully hangs together without shredding the tape it is stored on…mostly. On occasion there’s some minor breaking up in a certain frequency due to the sheer volume and proximity to the microphone but to be honest that is kind of what makes this recording such a revelation for me. I just never predicted that King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table would be as heavy and manic as it is here in an expertly recorded live setting. Rick Wakeman is a badass! Pro SDBRD 9.5 - Recorded for broadcast this uses two different sources of the broadcast but you don’t really notice the transition. What you will notice is how amazing this is, and what makes it really cool is how much Peter addresses the audience. It’s an intimate feeling gig, everyone is so dialed in to what is happening in the room with Peter…imagine, no cell phones, no distracted idiots, just genuine love and appreciation for the performer and his craft. Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Audience 8.6 - This is a surprisingly decent sounding tape. I was not expecting it to be anything close to this good, quite frankly. Clarity is reasonable, it’s not a muddy tape, there is some dynamic to it without distortion (although bass is not well defined). Audience 8.6 - This tape does not offer a wide dynamic range, but neither is it compressed sounding, so it’s not awful on the ears. The good thing about capturing a band like Genesis during live performances is that the PA and mix is usually good, and not a distorted metal mess, so even average gear can produce reasonably good results. Audience 8.5 - At first it’s a little over-driven and very harsh but it all smoothes out and becomes an astonishing document…still rather crude but powerful and all instruments are heard. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile. Audience 8.8 - This recording is nice and clear, and on the “bright” side of the audio spectrum which is actually very good for those who wish to season the sound with EQ. You can add some low end here and it would make a world of difference because the sound is already good, so anything that can help it is only going to make it even better rather than overdone. Sometimes loud rock concerts in large venues have a low end rumble that makes adding anything to it a risky proposition – this one screams “please add some low end to me”! A great one to personalize, the palate is free to embellish upon. Audience 8.7 - A VERY powerful recorded sound coming out at you like a hurricane. Thankfully this tape holds together, although it sounds like it’s going to tear apart any second – it’s quite a frantic recording if I can describe it that way. You are like placed in front of the mains, and surprisingly you can hear everybody, especially Klaus who sounds BRILLIANT as does the entire band. The sound envelopes you, it’s a completely immersive type of recording and will suck you in immediately. What a great find this is!
