Audience 8.7 - This tape is surprisingly clear, it is not super dynamic but it is nice and clear. It’s almost like a REALLY good AM radio broadcast. It has a narrow sound field, but it is comfortable there, and comfortable to your ears. Phil sounds like he’s singing right next to you, pretty cool. Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant? Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside? You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays? Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it. Black Sabbath Los Angeles 1980 Audience 8.9 - This is a much welcomed recording of perhaps the best post Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. 1980 was an interesting year, Ozzy making classic “solo” albums with his new band and Sabbath beginning a new era with a new singer in Ronnie James Dio and neither the worse for it. This is a great show, in great quality. Black Sabbath Vienna 1980 Audience 8.3 -Unfortunately this recording suffers from many ailments, mainly in the range and dynamics, but what it does offer is a previously uncirculated (and complete) show from Sabbath in Europe during the very crucial 1980 tour with Dio as new front man. This is what I get from this show- Dio is very committed to bringing the audience in to the spectacle…the performance is killer in every respect. The sound quality is not trash, but I want Dio more clear than this because he is really on his game this night. I think this tape belongs in this set because it doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of the set, it offers the collector a new tape of a complete show from 1980 and that is enough for me. Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. Audience 8.5 - What this tape represents is an almost uncanny time warp back in time, the sound that the taper captured is amazing – the mix and separation of instruments is what damages an otherwise exceptional sounding tape. With that being said, it’s got a lot to appreciate regardless of the actual music contained herein. For instance, once the soundman dials the mix in better, the music does sound MUCH better and guitar rises slightly higher up front making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The sound of this tape is good, with a punchy upper midrange but not uncomfortable, and roaring “low end” and I say that because while bass is not well defined, it certainly is present in the lower frequencies here. This tape will grow on you, and I promise once you start, and get past the first song (where the live mix is getting dialed in), you’ll find yourself more and more sucked in to it. Ultrasonic Studios 1969 Pro Studio 9.4 - Excellent stuff, I’d never heard this one before and I was pleasantly surprised to finally hear such pristine unofficial tracks by this great band. Tucson 1972 Audience 8.7 - A rambly, jambly sounding tape that allows you to hear every instrument with emphasis on drums, vocals and keyboards believe it or not…in such a way that sucks you right into it almost as if it were at a revival meeting. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of overload here (understandable) but I gotta tell you, this is a very, very exciting recording. Memphis 1972 Soundboard 9.7 - Scintillating stuff! Razor sharp guitar, pounding drums, and beautiful bass all interwoven and mixed for maximum clarity and separation of instruments. They were smart to allow some bleed from the audience to give this tape plenty of electric live atmosphere. SUPERB! Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Stoke 1974 Audience 8.4 - A loud tape with a touch of stadium boom, but not anything that approaches irritation. It sounds like it’s in stereo, I hear guitar in one channel and bass in the other which is kinda cool. The instruments are all clearly discernible here making for a tape that sits on the upper side of very good. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.7 - A tape that has a good, snappy live sound and a pretty good mix for the ears. The music is delivered to you through a tight mid-range and a snare drum that hovers over everything making it instantly delightful. I rather do like this one! Orange, France 1975 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, one that really has good separation of instruments, and very decent dynamics. When the guitar solos, the sound seems to glide above you, so that kind of effect and atmosphere puts this show into a category I call “Repeat Listening” because you will go to it again. Amsterdam 1976 Audience 8.8 - Brassy, but enough mid and bottom to smooth that out nicely. A touch of cymbal sizzle but again there’s enough of all other frequencies here that not any one stands out in an annoying fashion. This is a well-balanced tape with some real life in it. Disc 1 Soundboard 8.8 - This sounds like it could be from a television special as it has that telltale compression, and to my ears it sounds dated but in a cool way. A little narrow but clear and retains a sharpness, so you get every nuance of guitar but at the expense of any real bottom end – still is very good for the early vintage. Disc 2 Soundboard 9.6 except last two songs Audience 9.2 - This disc showcases some of the very best stuff I’ve heard, really a joy and fine quality too. Disc 3 SDBRD 9.7 - I hate to say it, but this is almost too good. At times though, guitar is mixed a little low, but it seems it’s only when he is on a certain setting on his guitar for whatever reason. Mostly it’s mixed real well. The audio fidelity is crystal clear, I think it needs more atmosphere…although to be fair Roy’s guitar creates that in spades. Audience 8.7 and SDBRD 8.8/9.1 - Both sources are clean and decent, the first disc is actually a radio broadcast but they used a tape source that was recorded by a fan in the audience! Sounds a little distant but clear with good atmospherics, just unusual to know how they did it. The other disc contains a board tape made at the Fillmore which is very good but more than that really shows the crossing over the line by “country” artists into uncharted territory. This music reminds me of what would happen if you took The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Beatles and told them to pretend they are Eagles flying around the Bay Area. Audience 8.8 - Quite the find! This is a strong and clear tape, although I sense the taper is quite new at it because for starters he manages only part of the show (although it’s most of the show) and second he says things (he’s clear on the recording, but thankfully not too chatty) that indicate he’s a noob. The audience around him gets into the show but are not overly intrusive in the recording. I found the guitar solo portion of the show to be the most electric as it sounds so close and clear…very cool! I like the I’m So Glad/Somebody Get Me A Doctor combo because it is one of those rare improvisational moments that you don’t know where it will go. Taper loves to stop and start too close to the songs sometimes cutting off endings it’s infuriating (and again indicates he’s a beginner) but thanks go to him for doing this one regardless. Audience 8.5 - Certainly a mainstay title in the huge catalog of live Metallica boots. Why? Because it is the classic line-up and it sounds reasonably good, even though the twin guitar attack is not clearly defined. Soundboard 8.8 - This is more than likely exactly what you would have heard had you bought this comp back in the 80’s. It has remained true to the original 1972 US Tour boot, which as you know gathers the soundboards from the tour and compiles them in such a way so as to present a dream set list (no song duplication). Soundboard 9.5 - This is a brilliant recording, razor sharp and electric at a time when most music was becoming rather lame. Not saying Pat Benatar did not have her share of radio friendly numbers, but even those featured good, solid rock guitar that did not resemble anything else offered by mainstream top 40 at that time (aside for maybe The Cars and Foreigner…and Cheap Trick). Audience 8.6 - OK, so this is one you might not be too familiar with, but it’s from ’79 so you know you gotta have it…so what’s the catch? Does it suck? Naw man, this recording actually captures THE EVENT in a way that sounds so realistic you’d think you were there. Now, here’s the catch – poor taper’s gear just was not quite up to the challenge of the volume and so there’s the little tiniest bit of distortion that affects one very narrow piece of the middle bandwidth that thankfully is not the annoying kind of distortion, it’s not a deal breaker. It does mean you may not wish to crank this up too loud as the louder it gets the more that frequency announces its presence to your ears. That being said, if you want complete immersion this tape provides it and then some. For that reason I think you have to dive in, I did and I really do appreciate this kind of tape. Audience 8.6 - I wanted to give this a better rating, and truth is it ain’t bad, but it is a little distant and the music lacks punch. It is clear enough though, and audience actually helps propel the energy level up a notch. Austin music fans are always up for a great concert and really show their enthusiasm. Also, I think the set list around this time was put together very well and flows nicely. MOR 1985 Audience 8.6 - A strong recording that gets off to a funky start (at one point a mic jack unplugs and one channel drops but it lasts only a minute). I prefer this to a dry soundboard to be honest. It’s not a perfect audience recording but it sure does deliver on energy and atmosphere! I like it. Tokyo 1987 Audience 8.7 - Nice atmosphere on this tape, and the audio comes through especially vocals and bass actually has a nice round sound to it. Guitars are not super distinct, but thankfully the solos are really soaring above and captured pretty well. I like the snare drum here, whoever was mixing this show really must have had a hard-on for the drummer ha ha! Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. Audience 8.4 - An incredibly loud tape, bordering on catastrophe but not quite going over the red line of doom. What I mean is, the tape is just way overloaded, but it hangs together miraculously just enough to be able go ahead and listen through…although at times it’s so intense you just have to turn the volume down a bit. Now, when you get to, say, The Rain Song – yeah, the tape shines…it’s just that kind of tape. NOTE: After the tape flip in Rain Song, the taper seems to have been able to dial down the recording level a little bit, it seems to get a little more manageable. Audience 8.4 - A little lo-fi here but guitar is up front followed by drums which you can hear well. Some tape hiss present, bass is in a good place not too boomy and complements the guitar sound well. Leslie is playing more fluid here, probably because RCMH is known for good acoustics so he must have had good feedback. Crowd is on his side, he owned New York without a doubt. I feel like this recording would benefit greatly from a good re-mastering, hiss reduction, etc. because it has a decent enough sonic foundation. Boston 1970 Audience 8.4 - The separation of instruments here is rather dense, not muddy, just not to a degree one would prefer. The sound itself is not bad, I actually do hear every instrument I just want certain things prominent when it comes to this band…I really need more detail in the guitar solos. I still think this is a good one for the collection – the band is not afraid to stretch out and jam, they have tremendous freedom onstage and it shows. Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection. Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. A great find! Soundboard 8.8 - This tape exhibits some compression characteristics but is overall clear enough to enjoy. It doesn’t favor any one particular frequency, and does not have a large amount of bottom end. Audience 9.0 - This is a very fine recording no doubt about it, although there is some kind of audio artifact present at the extreme high almost like it might be from the main microphone (stage mic). So, I don’t think it is the tape, or taper’s gear. At first you may think it is almost like a noise reduction artifact but it is not that which you will agree when you hear the electric guitars. That’s probably the only thing you can knock this for, but even that is rather minor, the music is very present, great live mix too. Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. A party-like atmosphere permeates and the band is very good all throughout this 3 disc set. Great performances, each and every band member shines. Audience 8.3 - One of those tapes that captures the power of the band, but does not deliver crisp definition…that being said, you must listen to this all the way through. It’s been cleaned up as best as could be and it delivers MUCH more audio than it ever did before prior to modern mastering techniques. A worthy addition to collections. When you arrive to the drum solo section, you will hear what this tape had the potential to present, it sounds great. Audience 7.9-8.3 - A tape that starts rough and ends rough but in the middle it is actually not bad. This is a taper that made this an event, the evening was captured with a genuine excitement which is epitomized by the introduction to the show by taper. I love that stuff. I like this tape because I understand now – it transcends the necessity for perfection because it happened in real time for the people who made this tape and there’s a twinkle of magic because you suddenly, for a split second, become them during the show.
