Audience 9.5 - You can relax into this show, it's occupying a very pleasant space when the soundwaves wash over you and you begin to have a sense of the size of the venue, the space around you, and the distance from the stage. That's what I like about smaller venue recordings, and modern taping gear is getting so much better with the mic technology and level adjust that it's really hard to screw it up. Audience 9.7 - Spectacular, crystal clear and lush sound makes you sink deeply into this one. For some, the Grateful Dead are not easily understood, but this show and this recording can easily be understood as beautiful music played with passion and talent galore. Now, to be honest, this set is missing an important segment, the "space/drums" part is conspicuously absent, but there is still plenty of lengthy workouts to keep you engaged with the psychedelic overtones of a Dead concert as well as the more bluegrass and bluesy numbers. All in all this is one for the history books. Grateful Dead Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA December 13, 1980 Disc 1 01 Feel Like A Stranger 02 Sugaree 03 C.C. Audience 8.7 - Many fans of the band, especially those who seek out Lemmy period recordings, look to this one as being easily top 3. It is left here untouched, even though to my ears it could use a volume boost but that can be done on the listener's end so it's not a deal-breaker at all. The recording is notable for being clear, and easy to discern Lemmy's immense power bass lines. I'd never heard it prior, so to me it was a very welcome addition to the collection. Audience 9.0 - A warm, comfortable recording. Plenty of headroom, and a good instrument balance. The music is challenging and expertly performed, stuff like this is why a hardly every play my guitar anymore. What's the point? Chris Impelliterri is a beast! Audience 9.0 - A clean and well made recording that allows for increase of volume without causing headaches! Everything is very well balanced, guitars and bass are in the pocket and drums sound spectacular. Soundboard 9.5 - Wow! Man, this is totally unexpected and will brighten your day (week, or month even!) like nothing else. A brand new discovery and it's a one/two punch with back to back soundboard recordings of Diver Down tour Van Halen, a tour that previously featured a measley two board tapes in existence. Well, it's not a perfect score, but the imperfections are a tiny price to pay for the glorious sounds present here! Each tape in slightly incomplete, but in places that the other show fills in so you end up hearing the music that makes up a complete Diver Down tour setlist. Basically, the sound engineer most likely had to stop rolling in certain spots in order to make tape changes, but all you have to do is look at each nights set list to see how it shakes out, and, thankfully some good editing has smoothed over some of the stops. As I listened, if I hadn't known there were cuts, I probably would not have been the wiser, basically unless you know where the cuts are you won't notice. But, the SOUND man! The sound is great, I really get to hear Michael Anthony's articulate bass playing, and he's all over the place with fills and runs! You kind of lose that detail in most Van Halen recordings. Eddie is just lighting it up as always, but it sounds especially amazing on these two tapes. The interplay is magic, I don't care if the band had their shortcomings personally, with each other, with whoever, it doesn't show on stage. Somebody get me a doctor, I just got double dosed with prime era Van halen soundboards I've never heard before! What an unbelievable find.

Audience 8.8 - A well made recording that captures what it sounded like at the event, which is to say it was pretty loud and somewhat bass heavy. Its metal, and it's an outdoor show and who knows where the taper is seated and what he has to deal with, so I give them high marks for the effort. Montreal Audience 8.9 - One of the very best audience recordings from this tour, and ad to that the fact that this is sourced directly from a new 24/96 transfer and has been remastered (16/44) and has never sounded better. Toronto Soundboard 9.4 - another recently discovered (and rare as hen's teeth) board tape from a tour that did not see many board tapes. So, it's not just that it has taken decades for this to be discovered, but that it is an outstanding board tape...it's just too unbelievable to fathom how suddenly there now appears three 1982 soundboards from out of nowhere.

Audience 8.9 - This tape gets the nod for being a well-captured piece of music at a time when music was seeing significant change. One of those change bands, beginning in the 2nd half of the 70's, was Talking Heads and they remained at the forefront for quite a few years. This tape shows why...it's got a very realistic feel to it and the band sounds confident. Soundboard 10 - This is a rare "10" perfection rating that is not given out unless and until a recording stops you dead in your tracks and commands your undivided attention. You know it when you hear it, and this is about as good as it can get short of you being placed in the optimal spot at the venue and even then you may not be getting something as good as this! Soundboard 9.4 - Great recording that gives you stunning detail and clarity with guitar, but here the bass sounds round and brassy and complements the guitar sound. In this mix, drums are also very tight, and the fact that the keyboards are panned to one side while guitar occupies the other really allows for an amazing separation of instruments, cohesive because it is expertly mixed but enough room between to allow the ears to focus on any one particular instrument (but I bet you'll not be able to block Ritchie out because he's living up to all the hype and then some in this one). Audience 8.7 - Better than average, the tape has dynamics to it and even if vocals sound somewhat distant, the bass and guitar have a nice attack with the low end having that chest pounding quality which adds a lot to the electrifying atmospherics. Rory is particularly savage, playing what is probably a really wild crowd since it is where he is from. The performance is worth the entrance fee, the sound quality is good enough to warrant extended engagement. Full disclosure: There is some tape hiss present although it only becomes obvious when the band is not playing.
