Audience 8.7 - A very good tape for the time, and what a good time it is for the Stones. What I really enjoyed the most about this recording is how clear Mick Taylor is in the mix. It’s not a super bright sounding tape, and it is not muddy, it is better than average but it shines in atmosphere, performance, and vibe. The band is clearly enjoying the show as much as the audience is. A keeper! Audience 9.7 - Opening for ELP, this is the short lived Robert Fleischman period just before the arrival of Steve Perry. Hard to find anything about this recording to complain about, it’s amazingly life-like and extremely dynamic – about the only fault is how short it is. Taper arrived late, but makes up for it with a stellar recording. Audience 8.6 - Taped by the same person using the same gear so there is only minor differences between these shows which are related specifically to position, and it sounds like taper was in roughly the same general position for each show. Very consistent throughout, although just to be super detailed I have to prefer the second show which seems to be slightly closer to my ears. The quality is very clear, leans towards the upper end of the sound spectrum but not too harsh, only to the point I think you could add some bass and that would really allow these shows to satisfy. They are all very good, bass would put them into the great category. Four Discs of music that will melt your brain. All are either Very Good or Excellent quality, so it’s not a jarring experience to sit through all four discs, they have a certain continuity to them. I think this is a great time period of music and these guys were just on another level. It’s a fun thing to ponder, whether there are any bands that can do this sort of thing today – and the answer is “I really don’t think so”. Soundboard 8.7 - A show that factors in to what would become a stellar career over many decades. Pretty much on her own now (no longer paired with Gram Parsons R.I.P.) she started playing in the clubs in the DC area when a producer came to record this show for future reference as he crafted her breakout solo album. Did she know he was at the gig? Who knows, but she obviously made an impact. Morrison & Jeff Wisor on tracks 7-11 (disc 2) {After Gram Parsons's death} Emmy moved back to D.C., where Tom Guidera had also become a country music convert. With pedal steel player Danny Pendleton and two other musicians, they put together the Angel Band and started gigging around the clubs, playing some of the songs she’d performed with Gram. Eddie Tickner made Harris his number one priority and he convinced Mary Martin, an A&R representative from Warner/Reprise Records (the label that had released Parsons’ solo work) to investigate an Angel Band show in a Washington nightclub. Emmylou Harris became a Reprise Records recording artist in 1974; with her daughter Hallie in tow, the Angel Band relocated to Los Angeles to begin work on Harris’s first true solo album. To produce, Martin paired Harris up with Nova Scotia native Brian Ahern, the mastermind behind Anne Murray’s spate of hits in the early 70’s. She brought the quiet Canadian to hear the Angel Band, and he recorded the performance on a hand-held cassette machine to study at home. This sounds better than a hand-held cassette machine recording, purportedly a sound board, but it's not by any means what we think of as soundboard quality by today's standards. -
Audience 8.4 and Audience 8.2 - Both performances showcase a confident Jeff Beck, but in terms of sound quality the London show is clearer and bass has less boom so you can really dial in to the playing. The Manchester show is not that bad but it is a bit murkier, slightly more dynamic in the vocal dept. and I think the London show edges it out in performance quality as well. Doesn’t mean you will ignore it, just that you will favor the London gig, in fact the London show is a real contender to be in all Jeff Beck fans’ collections. Beck, Bogert, & Appice .... This is the complete show from a radio programme called "We're Going Out Tonight" with no radio DJ talking over the music or tuning. Very likely recorded before being broadcast on the radio. Of special note is Florian's use of the Votrax VS-6 "Talking Typewriter" as Karl put it in his memoir for "Die Sonne, Der Mond, Die Sterne." -

Audience 8.8 - Very bright recording, the bottom end is there and it has good detail but could be a little deeper. That being said, if you want to hear the combination of solid, hard rock guitar paired with Greg Lake’s proggy and sometimes jazzy keyboards well, this is about as good as that combination can ever sound. It works actually, quite well. The good thing about this recording being on the bright side is that the guitars and keys are especially clear. Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. Soundboard 9.4 - Yes it is CDB but it’s also a whole lot more. Since 1974 they hosted the Volunteer Jam and invited their friends and fellow “southern” rock bands including this legendary get together (famous for being the first on-stage appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash). Sound is taken from what sounds like a couple of different sources but it’s all consistently great. January 13, 1979 Volunteer Jam V was held at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. This Jam marked the return of Lynyrd Skynyrd to the stage for the first time since the '77 plane crash, and the CDB gave the first live performance of a song that would catapult the band to superstardom, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Special guests also included Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle from the Marshall Tucker Band, Dobie Gray, The Winters Brothers Band, The Henry Paul Band, Link Wray, John Prine,Papa John Creach, Carl Perkins, and Jim Owen. Audience 8.0 - You are probably wondering why I am including low rated recordings here, especially Kiss…well you may have a point but here’s the thing: This site is for ALL collectors, and the reason this show is listed here is because it circulated for years in unlistenable quality (below 7.0), but thanks to modern technology it is now listenable. It’s from perhaps one of their best tours, musically speaking, and needed an upgrade so bad! So, for the casual fan I would say pass, but for the Kiss collector who knows how bad this show sounded and wants to throw away that old CD, I would recommend this 2020 re-master. Still kind of rough but there is now music here instead of an insufferable wall of distortion. I am not 100% sure but I think the big thing about this show among collectors was the inclusion of the song “Move On” to the set list, perhaps only performed this one time. Audience 8.8 - This came from a collection of tapes that were recorded by a couple who had the permission of the venue, so you would expect them to be done with more precision and care….but the story goes that they never listened to the finished results and therefore were unaware of the flaws in all of their efforts, mainly being signal overload. Now, this is where modern technology comes in to the equation – because after all these years we are able to notch out the offending frequencies and now the tapes sound VERY good! Listen to the difference, go back and find a pre-mastered version of this show and then listen to this one. It’s amazing, really amazing what a well trained ear can do for some of these old artifacts. This show also happens to be an inspired performance too, so win/win. A beautiful recording that captures the vibe of the day, and every note of the gig as the sound wafted gently through the air into the superior quality tape deck that was used for this capture. Soundboard 8.6 - This is a tape of contraries – on the one hand it is very forceful, with a wall of intense guitar/vocal energy with a driving bass pushing the sound through your brain – but it comes at a cost…which is dynamic range. The music is all there, you will even hear piano in the mix, and it’s just kind of lacking overall clarity and dynamics. All that being taken into consideration, what you have here is still a very good piece of history, a fun listen and one that does slightly improve (after the beginning where the sound is still finding its level/mix. The only audience recording on this set actually is not that bad, but compared to immaculate soundboard tapes, your ears will need to adjust but you will notice that it is a very good capture with some occasional irregularities with the sound mix where the music gets “further” away (not literally, just something to do with the recording), but overall I think it is ok and worthwhile to enjoy. It’s kind of fun, it’s a time capsule, and as long as I can hear the music in a clear way, even if it is not “hi-fi”, it’s fine by me. Audience 9.5 - Easily one of the best, if not the best, audience recording of the US leg of the 1988 Tour. If you have to pick one, I would always point to this one for that reason but also because it is a great show and features a special guest or two (Adam West and son Dweezil), but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig. I admit I wasn’t too knowledgeable of his stuff, I knew his name (he is from Houston, he was just one of our locals) and had numerous chances to see him live…but sadly never did. I should have. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs. FM Broadcast 9.1 (Seattle) and Audience 8.3 (Fresno) - Two very cool shows with the first one taking the cake for fidelity but the second one is a stomper. It is pretty clear with guitar being very good and loud (screaming in fact!) but not at the expense of everything else. It’s lacking maybe some lower end definition and separation of instruments during their jamming parts (might lose some of the drums in there, and keyboards are absent sometimes) but these are not going to bother you when you start listening to this gig because it’s a thriller. Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so! Audience 9.0 - An interesting recording, it’s not a board as far as I can tell, but the vocals are panned over to one side (and they sound like they are right next to you, literally!) but the rest of the music is not hard panned. Audience 8.4 - A decent old (and by old I mean it sounds…old) tape that doesn’t have extreme highs or lows but is pretty consistent and clear enough to hear everything. The highlight to any Kinks tape of this vintage is the set list, they had some of their best songs ever and were playing all of them.
