Audience 9.7 - Simply gorgeous this one. Full, dynamic, clear, and a great balance of instruments for what can only be described as a thoroughly pleasant and infinitely enjoyable audience recording. Soundboard 9.7 - Pro recording in a live in-studio setting so it better be as good as it gets, and this is. Aside from minor tape hiss (only noticeable during the lulls), this is near perfection. Boston 1973 - Soundboard 9.7 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, as you can expect with a jazz rock combo the sound has to be extraordinary due to the nature of the musicianship and sound they each produce - in other words it is easier to manage the sound when it isn't over distorted and ear-splittingly loud. This is, as a result, a lovely sounding tape (during the quiet sections there is some minor tape noise in the background but it disappears as soon as the music starts). New York 1974 - Audience 9.0 - I had a hard time figuring out whether this was an aud or a soundboard because of the proximity of the vocals. I determined it had to be a semi-professional audience recording because of the crowd responses being pretty well picked up in the tape after songs...if it was a board tape that would not be as audible (if at all). But it could still easily pass as a board tape if you didn't take that into account - so is it a board tape? It is very good for this venue, Carnegie Hall acoustics did not lend themselves well to loud rock music, if this is indeed an audience tape they did a fantastic job! Audience 8.7 - A recording that won't set the night on fire but will provide enough warmth and light to keep you in front of it. I only noticed some issues with how the cymbals sounded, to me it almost sounded like tape hiss - I had to really concentrate to tell what it was at first, but, it does seem to be Keith banging away incessantly as he is known to do. Towards the end of the tape, the cymbal anomaly seems to get worse. It is still a decent old tape. Audience 9.3 - This recording has a great feel and ambience to it - a thwack of the kick drum like you are there, but good separation of instruments that let's the guitar and vocals ride nicely in their own space above the bottom end. Soundboard 8.8 - a rather dusty old tape but oh how glorious it is! So many years later and this unpolished gem finally surfaces! You can tell it's age, sure, but the bones are all here and the band is ferocious. Opening for Black Sabbath, yeah, they had to bring it and history knows the rest. The inclusion of the recently surfaced film footage adds to the excitement of these finds, even if the footage is not the same San Diego show of the same year. Audience 9.0 - This is actually how The Bangles should sound live. This is as punk as I have heard them. Audience 8.8 - A pretty decent recording which might be a touch on the thin side as the deepness of bass is lacking, but still enough meat on the bones to be worthy of the collection. Vocals come through clearly, drums do sound good too and the overall sound mix is very even. Audience 8.8 - The sound of this recording owes almost all of its characteristics to the house PA sound. What I mean is this: The recorder very accurately captured exactly what this gig sounded like, and so if there is any particular thing that is not as good as it could be, we need to talk to the sound man. This tape captures this show in excellent quality, I would say the rating reflects more what the sound itself actually was like at this show - not great (for me I just did not love the drum sounds, and thought the guitars could be louder) but really very good. I think it is a matter of preference then, because some people might really like the way this show sounds coming out of the main PA system. Audience 8.9 - A pleasant surprise to hear how good this one is. I was not expecting it, for some reason.
