Metropolitan Opera House NY 1970 Audience 8.4 - A decent tape considering we have very few US 1970 tour audience tapes that sound great. A little sweetening with EQ and you’ve just raised the sound rating another half a point…technology has changed the way collectors think about these old audience source tapes. Newcastle 1971 Audience 8.7 - A surprising new find! Buried for decades and now dusted off, restored and presented for your approval. It’s not bad! I can hear it all, with some cool atmosphere. I rather like it! San Francisco 1971 Audience 8.8 - This tape has some depth to it, where you get definition in the bass and not just “low end” which I appreciate. Roger rises above in the sound mix but on this tape nobody is drowned out, it’s evenly mixed and that makes it enjoyable. Some background noise which sounds like it is coming from the house PA but not during the band performing…all in all this is a real good one. Studio Quality 8.9 - The quality is great but you have to get past the first song and a half as there is some static present. Once you move past those tracks you get some very interesting studio rehearsals and outtakes. I love the rawness here, it’s very visceral and powerful. Soundboard 8.8 - A very old sounding tape that received a recent “facelift” giving it some more punch while reducing tape noise (without compromising any high end). What you end up with is another very good early performance (whilst the band was still doing some Pretties For You numbers) in very good quality. I never get tired of the early Alice Cooper stuff, even if I still don’t understand “Sun Arise” ha ha! Audience 9.0 - Rowdy, exciting, electric, and just a ton of fun! A good and crisp recording that feels nice on your ears. Minden 1973 Audience 8.8 - One of the earliest concert recordings ever sourced! It sounds very good, decent equipment used, and maybe placed a little back in the club but otherwise it’s a lot better than it has a right to be. The band certainly evolved quite a bit from these early club days, but the character of the band never did. Fascinating document! Minden 1974 Audience 9.4 - What a difference a year makes, as the band return to the same club a year later and wreck the place! Extremely tasty, the recording does the band justice as it literally just leaps out of the speakers with maximum ferocity while retaining enough detail and depth to let you sit and listen in total awe. Audience 8.8 - This is what we all look forward to as Rush collectors, another great, and rare, Rush show from one of their best time periods. While not quite as clear as the Boston 79, this tape gives us a great aural spectrum for our ears to delight in. Audience 9.5 - Holy Moly this is RED HOT! The recording is right in your face but not distorted at all. It’s amazing how close this sounds, its super clear too. The only knock I have is that the bottom end is not as beefy as I would prefer. I really wanted more low end punch but if that is the only knock, then you probably should explore this one because not only is it great audio-wise but the playing is off the charts, and I mean seriously Jeff Beck and Stanley Clarke are at the absolute peak of Mount Everest here. Soundboard 8.8 - A welcomed board tape that I knew nothing of previously before discovering it. It’s fine, it’s not a “pristine” or sterile tape by any means and it does sound…dated a bit but it’s the mighty ‘Halen in all their splendor and it’s great! Van Halen 1979-10-02 Tucson, Az. Audience 9.8 - It’s hard to find anything that is quite as marvelous as this…seriously. You can take all your pristine board tapes and none of them come close to capturing the essence of Led Zeppelin on stage in front of an audience. This is simply a MUST HAVE no matter how many shows you have in the collection (certainly you already have this anyway) but get this one again because it’s been recently transferred from the original cassette masters and given the treatment. This could easily come out officially. BRILLIANT!!! Audience 8.8 - A down n’ dirty recording that is surprisingly clean! How do I mean? Well, it captures not just the sound of the Dolls on stage (which is a dirty, sleezy rock and roll) but also the perfect atmosphere of this time and place almost to the degree that you don’t ever want it to end. Audience 9.3 - An excellent capture of a great performance by the entire band. With a recording like this where taper is using high quality equipment, the end result is only as good as the PA sound since that is what your mics capture. In the case of Dio, I am sure they have a multi-million dollar PA system and expert sound engineers at the desk. The live sound is well mixed and powerful.
