• Audience 8.6 - Solid, with some tape squeals here and there about halfway in that do go away. A good solid recording here.
  • Audience 9.2 - Great dynamics and amazing atmosphere! This is certainly one for every kind of collector, even casually Genesis fans would love this. A special gig. • Audience 9.5 - Listening to this recording made me think for a second I was listening to classic Gabriel era sans Peter Gabriel (he’s backstage nursing cold) ha ha!  What I mean is, the performance and setlist is reminiscent of an earlier time because the band seem to be playing the songs as if for the first time. It’s just great to hear – and the sound quality is top shelf. • Audience 9.2 - Very punchy up front, clean, sweet levels and great mix. Wonderful!
  • Soundboard 9.2 - Great if not a tad flat (as most soundboards can be)
  • Audience 8.1 - Yes this is ranked pretty low on the sound quality scale, but it’s not a disaster because this is actually a full point or more better than the previous version of this legendary gig. It’s not unlistenable, and the proof is that you can hear every word Gabriel says during his stories. Extensive work in repairing and remastering this from a 1st generation tape made all the difference. Rediscover the earliest known live Genesis recording because for historical purposes there is no more significant a recording than this. • Audience 7.0 - Thin and distant
  • Soundboard 9.2 - Good show and I love how the drums sound in this mix.
  • Soundboard 9.5 - Superb clarity and attenuation, especially where the high end is concerned. Very lifelike, no sign of radio compression which suggests this tape to be pre-FM broadcast. • Audience 9.1 - A strong, very clear tape which has a deep bottom end, you can feel the kick and the bass!  The band sound close, there’s no indication they are playing a large venue, it’s almost kind of an intimate sound. • Audience 8.9 - Very nice and clear with the keyboards more up front this time. Bass sounds sweet too. A great recording!
  • Audience 8.7 - This tape is surprisingly clear, it is not super dynamic but it is nice and clear. It’s almost like a REALLY good AM radio broadcast. It has a narrow sound field, but it is comfortable there, and comfortable to your ears. Phil sounds like he’s singing right next to you, pretty cool. • Audience 8.7 - The tape is new to circulation and it’s a good one. The rating reflects only that there is a lack of dynamics in the bandwidth of the tape but the clarity is decent and it is a comfortable listen – not harsh, not muddy, not brittle…it’s a good tape and I am glad it was discovered. Genesis Free Trade Hall Manchester, UK February 24, 1973 1. Watcher of the Skies 2. Musical Box 3. Get 'em out by Friday 4. Suppers Ready 5. Return of the Giant Hogweed 6. The Knife (encore)
  • Audience 8.3 - This recording is balancing very finely on the borderline but thankfully falls onto the “acceptable” side. I would call it slightly above average maybe, as the tape shows some typical age limitations, but still manages to present the evening in a listenable quality. Must have been a small audience at this show, crowd response is weak, but the band still perform admirably. Guzman Theatre, Miami, FL. March 9th, 1974 Disc 1

  • Soundboard 9.3 - Simply a MUST HAVE if you have any interest at all in Genesis. Includes some backstage interviews, giving an amazing perspective of this epic show. Enchanting!
  • Audience 8.6 - Right down in there with the crowd, listening to the audience listening to the band. The band and their music sound terrific, the audio quality is actually pretty darn good, bright, not distorted, maybe not as full on the bottom end but the bass itself is very round but not thumping. Drums are crisp and well defined. This is actually a good recording!
  • Audience 8.3 - Sounds kind of distant, but because it is not echoey you can adjust and then place yourself in the seat of the taper.
  • Audience 8.2 - Vocals a little buried, all music pretty clear and detailed.
  • Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile. • Audience 7.7 - A wide stereo feel, a touch of that large hall sound, pretty clear with a decent mix. Some audience chatter.
  • Audience 7.6 - Has a kind of thin quality to it even though you can hear everything on stage. Sounds like it needs a nice big punch in the middle, someone needs to remaster this one. Not crappy, just needs a mastering job.
  • Audience 8.9 - Strong stuff! A must!
  • Audience 9.1 - A beautiful recording with a terrific drum sound, and expansive, atmospheric ensemble mix of all instruments especially keyboards to pair with that drum sound. This might be one you go to frequently. • Audience 9.3 - A nicely done job this one. • Audience 8.5 - Starts off a little funky as the taper gets in position but slowly develops into a very good and clear recording for the duration. The audience is golden, very respectful and this makes for a better overall experience too.
  • Soundboard 9.1 - Technically sounds good, bright, crisp and all that, but I am not in love with the overall sound mix. It’s serviceable though.
  • Audience 7.6 - This tape is very clear but has low levels and is somewhat narrow in bandwidth. By turning the volume up, and adding some personal touches on EQ you can lift the experience to a little higher level.
  • Audience 7.5 - Clear but lacking depth (Early Show).
  • Audience 8.4 - This tape was made by a very sincere taper, you can clearly tell the person tried very hard to make it work. I think, if I had to guess, the problem was not him, it was more than likely improper microphone type and simple passage of time, because this is a clear and strong tape that falls a little short in some aspects making it a little above average where it could have been amazing. The tape struggles through The Lamia, where you get the effects of age and degradation. The audio quality suffers a little bit because of distance, and that robs some dynamics and clarity, but here’s the thing: The equipment was good quality and that comes through as you do get a certain realism, a sense of the venue and atmosphere that the open mic captures. The stereo field on this tape is pretty wide, so my guess is that microphones were hoisted above the audience somewhere middle of the arena. I think I like this tape in some regards, and I definitely do not consider it rubbish and neither will you. One last thought – I found this recording did slowly improve as the show progressed, perhaps dipping a bit at the end of disc one but not catastrophically. • Audience 7.7 - A real “middle of the crowd” recording. You get to eavesdrop on some conversations while Genesis perform their hits. Now, I will say this, there’s a lot of music to sink into here, it’s not THAT bad really. Give it a chance.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - Peter sounds superb here, the tape highlights him in particular. Great!
  • Soundboard 9.3 - Not a pure board, there is some ambiance mixed in from the audience. I think this was a broadcast, it’s quite good!
  • Audience 9.4 - I rate this one very high because not only does it capture the performance in solid detail, but it also manages to capture that indefinable thing called vibe. This show has major vibe. Get it!
  • Audience 7.3 - Distant and narrow, but seems like a good mastering can fix some of the limitations. Needs a stereo widening and some punch in the mids and highs.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - Well balanced and full of life, not a typically sterile board.
  • Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. • Audience 8.5 - Good solid recording of what sounds like it may be an outdoor show. Atmosphere is great! Love it.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - This is not a pure board and by that I mean it sounds like some of the instruments are not direct patches through the board onto the tape. It sounds like a hybrid where some of it is a direct feed and some of it is mic’d up. You can tell it is something like that when listening to the difference between the keyboards and vocals, and drums (especially the kick).  Either way it’s great. • Soundboard 8.8 - A fine performance of The Lamb here, sound quality is very good and mix is very good. You can enjoy this one, more than once!
  • Audience 8.4 - One of the better early Italian shows, bass maybe pushing hard, but it’s clear and energetic. Lovely stuff!
  • Audience 8.5 - Tape is a little hissy, but it is still a clear recording where you hear a lot of separation between instruments and “air” or “headroom” which allows music a chance to unfold and show peaks and valleys. Very good, not great, but very good.
  • Audience 8.8 - A very nice effort, sounds like the taper had pretty good gear. I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. This is a worthwhile listen. I could not find that much to complain about except maybe it’s just a tad back in the seats but that just allows for more air and atmospherics which are all here and well captured.
