Audience 7.4 to 7.7 - A tape that varies in consistency but man oh man, this is incredible! I don’t care about the limitations of the tape, I can hear everything, at times it gets quite good and clear, there is some phasing at times, sometimes the taper is walking around too but it doesn’t even matter. This is amazing!

Audience 8.2 - Well, it isn’t a recording that will win any grammies but damn if it isn’t RAW just like the band and their music. This recording actually suits this band – it’s a little rough, but it’s brutal and in your face. The vocals fight for bandwidth against angry and loud guitars, driving bass, and furious non-stop drums. It’s actually kind of a fun listen despite its limitations. Oh, and some good news – it is not a muddy mess at all, it’s just a loud band in a small club sounding for all the world like the debut of punk rock. Soundboard 8.8 - A dated sounding board tape, yes it is good but I can see how there are limitations with board tapes just as there are with audience tapes. If I was a fan I would still love this show, I mean, it’s clear and clean and it’s finely performed so there’s no real downside here. The Smiths Versailles, Paris 12-01-1984 01 - Intro 02 - William, It Was Really Nothing 03 - What She Said 04 - Nowhere Fast 05 - Reel Around The Fountain 06 - Heaven Knows Im Miserable Now 07 - How Soon Is Now? 08 - Still Ill 09 - Rusholme Ruffians 10 - This Charming Man 11 - Barbarism Begins At Home 12 - I Want The One I Can't Have 13 - Hand In Glove 14 - What Difference Does It Make? 15 - Handsome Devil 16 - Miserable Lie
-
Pro 9.6 -An obviously professionally recorded show, this will certainly provide the listener with a lot to love although I still like more atmosphere on a live recording than what is contained herein. The beginnings and endings do show the presence of an enthusiastic audience. The Smiths "Same Day Again" Oxford Apollo March 18th 1985 01. William It Was Really Nothing 02. Nowhere Fast 03. Soundboard 9.7 - An amazing sounding tape, the bass sounds wonderful and all instruments mixed perfectly. A great one! The Smiths May 4th, 1984 Markthalle, Hamburg, Germany 01. Hand In Glove 3:02 02. Soundboard 9.1 - I rate this as a soundboard because even though I am not 100% sure, the giveaway is the drums. There’s no way this is from the audience as the drums are in stereo, obviously professionally mixed and panned in a stereo sound field. The Smiths Queen Margaret Hall Glasgow, Scotland March 2, 1984 1. -Hand In Glove 2. -Heaven Knows 3. -Girl Afraid 4. -This Charming Man 5. -Pretty Girls Make Graves 6. -Still Ill 7. -This Night Has Opened My Eyes 8. -Barbarism Begins At Home 9. -Back To The Old House 10. -What Difference Does It Make 11. -Reel Around The Fountain 12. -You've Got Everything Now 13. -Handsome Devil

Studio Quality 9.4 - I admit I never was a fan, but being a music collector I ended up discovering a few things I’d missed and this is one. While I am still not the biggest Morrissey fan, I think he certainly fits with this style and let’s admit it these songs are all quite good. The Smiths Demos & Outtakes 01 -Reel Around The Fountain (July 1983, Troy Tate final mix) 02 -The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (October 1983, John Porter monitor mix) 03 -This Night Has Opened My Eyes (June 1984, unreleased studio recording) 04 -Rusholme Ruffians (July 1984, John Porter first take) 05 -I Misses You (December 1984, instrumental) 06 -There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (September 1985, early take) 07 -The Queen Is Dead (Fall 1985, original unedited version) 08 -Frankly, Mr Shankly (November 1985, Stephen Street "trumpets" recording) 09 -Ask (9 June 1986, probable first-ever take) 10 -Is It Really So Strange? Pro Studio 9.6 - Crystal clear and in fact does not even sound like it was recorded off air, these are certainly pre-broadcast. The Smiths BBC 1983-1986 01. Pro 9.7 - This is a professional recording and I am not sure if it is a board tape but an open mic seems more logical after hearing. It’s great, and the band is a happy, jangly, fun, rollicking, well-oiled machine producing songs that make you want to dance…and then slit your wrists. The Smiths Last of the English Roses Hammersmith Palais, London 12th March 1984 01. -Miserable Lie 02. -Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now 03. -This Charming Man 04. -I'll Never Make That Mistake Again 05. -Pretty Girls Make Graves 06. -Still Ill 07. -This Night Has Opened My Eyes 08. -Barbarism Begins at Home 09. -Back to the Old House 10. -What Difference Does It Make 11. -I Don't Owe You Anything 12. -Reel Around the Fountain 13. -Hand in Glove 14. -You've Got Everything Now 15. -Handsome Devil 16. -These Things Take Time

This is a local product (Houston) and dates from 1998 (with one track from 1995) and perfectly encapsulates the odd effect of the what your perception is of music after the passage of enough time. For instance, I remember this band from the time and considered them just another local "inner loop" grunge band...but hearing this CD they do not categorize so easily there. I find this to be an odd mixture of things that all sort of make me uncomfortable in a creepy way. Some people like that sort of thing though. Anyway, musically it's got some interesting stuff going on and might be worth checking out at this attractive price. CD is SEALED.

Soundboard 8.8 - Not your typical board tape here, in fact I hesitate to even call it one because to me it sounds like a stage recording. Either way, it is decent but not great. What is great, however, is this period of the band and this performance is indicative of that peak they attained. Marvelous playing throughout – and like I said the sound quality is decent and enjoyable but I expected more from a professional recording.

Audience 8.4 - A loud and raucous tape (and show) that is a rollicking good time despite some minor hiss and lack of precise clarity. It’s not bad though, I mean, it’s a true capture and delivers the vibe and excitement of the evening.
