In October of 1973, Bill Aucoin, who had witnessed several KISS concerts during the summer months, approached the group to become their personal manager. KISS hired Aucoin, and subsequently inked a recording contract with Casablanca Records on November 1, 1973. KISS was the first act signed to Neil Bogart's new label. KISS began recording tracks for their debut LP at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during Autumn of '73. On December 31st, KISS performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, opening for Blue Öyster Cult and Iggy Pop, with the hyped New Years Eve gig billed as the band's official industry premiere. This has gone down in KISStory as the first time Gene would accidentally ignite his hair while breathing fire at the end of "Firehouse!" "Dirty Livin'" extended version wasn't very widely known at the time of release, possibly because it was only released in countries like Italy, Germany, France and Mexico. Soundboard 8.6 The board mix favors only one half of the band to the near exclusion of the others but does level out some as it progresses. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace! The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce. -

New Haven 1975 Audience 9.0 - Nice one here, a lovely guitar tone that rings out clear and true, so close you can put yourself in tapers seats! Only heard one small drop out, there’s another somewhere else but I don’t recall. Only lasted a few seconds. Either way, this is truly an electrifying tape and I have to say I think it can be considered a must have. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.6 -A recently re-mastered version has appeared, and thankfully so because this tape suffered serious hiss and muddiness before. Now, there’s some hiss remaining but not near as much, and layer after layer of muck has been removed revealing a fine tape, and a blistering performance. Detroit 1976 Audience 9.1 - Electric atmosphere, almost palpable as you settle into a great show by a guitar master. Band is hot, audience is responding…a great night for rock and roll! Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy! It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before. Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. FM Broadcast 9.2 - A great recording that captures the atmosphere and the thrilling musicianship brightly, if maybe a touch too boldly on the meters…no worries, there’s nothing to interfere with your listening pleasure. The band…did not know much about them but they sure have the chops. I get a little bit of a sort of Whitesnake influence, but not any of the trademark cheesiness. Jake E. Lee is very acrobatic without unnecessary shredding, I would not call his playing shred at all in fact. It’s actually quite tasteful and great use of effects…thrilling at times, and very few dive bombs and when he does it’s in and out, they don’t overstay their welcome. I could say that for the songs too, they all have good balance and set up all the solos nicely. They even cover Purple Haze…umm…maybe they should have left that one alone. But everything else is tops. Radio Broadcast 8.9 - Two different sources were used to make one complete broadcast and as such there is slight audio change throughout, but all is good because it is all very good! Soundboard 9.4 - As always the performance is stellar, and even during the early 80’s Prince had a great sense of tone and did not plasticize his guitar sound. There are some tasty and snarling moments that make you think “what was the audience thinking during this solo?” You know, the early 80’s typical Prince fan probably had no interest in fuzzed out Hendrix style soaring guitar solos mixed in with their pop/soul/funk music. Audience 8.6 - This is a very good recording where all I can say is I wanted more guitar…but Bonzo is furious and drums sound heavy, bass is POUNDING without booming, and Plant rides it all with a reasonably clear and present vocal that kind of seems like it’s floating like cream above the sound. All in all I have to say this is pretty righteous for a 1972 aud. tape. Recommended! Audience 9.1 - A really really nice one here – and do not be dismayed that it is from 1984 because quite frankly this shreds. I love the atmosphere, when you can capture a show with plenty of atmosphere and still retain great dynamics in the sound of the band that means you have great gear and great seats! By the way I should point out that this has been listed as a soundboard elsewhere, it's great don't get me wrong but I am not 100% sure of the claim. Long Beach 1978 Audience 9.3 - This recording could easily pass as a KBFH radio broadcast it is very well done, but my only complaint is one that probably has nothing to do with the tape itself but rather the stage mix. If you are a guitar guy, you will want more guitars in the mix – that being said you are going to be getting breathtaking keyboards, vocals, and solid drums and a bass that is there holding it together but not booming or rumbling. All in all, this one is quite different than other bootleg tapes of the era, it has a professionalism to it that you won’t hear often. I say this is probably a must have for Styx collectors. Oakland 1978 Audience 8.4 - Sadly, what tries to be a very good recording just doesn’t quite reach that status due mainly to what I believe is the wrong style of microphone used. To my ears, it sounds like a condenser mic, and consequently the audio is bunched up into the middle frequency leaving indistinct instrument separation. That being said, it’s “trying” to be very good and in spots it really is – mainly during quieter passages where you can tell the taper did bring pretty good gear. Almost but not quite, but still qualifying as a good addition to a Styx fan’s collection (and great as a “bonus” concert in this set). SDBRD 8.8 - A rollicking good time is what you are going to get here, maybe not the ideal sound mix (although it gets better), but this is a band that despite all outward appearance is quite talented musically (and seem to be quite natural performing live on stage). You will love the music and even the on stage banter…perhaps this band was the role model for Steel Panther? Ha ha!
