New York 1975 Audience 8.3 - Not particularly clear, but recording does have some force behind it that propels the sound into your ears, making it slightly better than your average, or mediocre 70’s audience tape, and that is really good because this is a rare one – only 4 known to circulate recordings from the US Sheer Heart Attack tour. Hear the band just before they exploded! Santa Monica 1975 Audience 8.8 - A very good recording of the rarely captured US Sheer Heart Attack tour. Soundboard 9.0 - A large, open air festival “board” tape which probably uses some open stage micing. I would venture to guess this must have been a difficult show to control, and a recording made with an eye for a broadcast that they fought with every step of the way. That said, it’s pretty good stuff under all the circumstances. Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. I mean, they play a song called “Prince Of The Punks” so what does that tell you? Sale!An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally! Audience 8.2 - Not one of the better ones, it lacks clarity (drums are actually pretty clear though, and the vocals do rise above somewhat) and to these ears, I gotta say, this is the closest I have ever heard Boston sounding like a heavy metal concert. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. Audience 8.8 - Well here it is folks, the BEST early vintage ZZ Top recording to ever surface. We already gave up a long time ago that the band would dig into their archives for us, but now it’s been completely left up to the fans to provide the early documents…and for better or worse they have (mostly worse). After all this time a tape has surfaced that presents a powerful early testament to the rocking blues power of ZZ Top before they “made it” to the FM bigtime. The hits were already in the repertoire, but only hinting at the massive success to come. This is the REAL DEAL – a clear, loud, balsy tape from very early in the bands career. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds. Soundboard 9.0 - The unmistakable emphasis in this mix is the percussion (and to a lesser extent keyboards) but that makes for an interesting take on this one…you are forced to reckon with the powerhouse engine room for once, and with no regrets either. Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward. Audience 8.3 - Limitations with the microphone is probably what prevents this recording from blossoming as it sometimes seems like it wants to do. You can hear it, for instance, during some of the passages, but I think the overloading of the bass crowds out the guitar a bit too much (although you can hear guitar, just not in a clear and detailed manner). Drums and keyboards dominate with a very insistent, pulsing bass undercurrent throughout. Does that count this out? Not at all, due to the disparity of live BJH recordings, I think this one is worth exploring. The compositions and playing make up for the limitations on the tape. Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present. Audience 8.8 - At first my thought was that this was a recording for a broadcast because even though it sounds like an audience recording, that may just mean that the station used room mics to capture the concert. What tipped me off to the fact that this is indeed just a really good audience tape is the clapping near the mic after the songs. Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States. Audience 9.3 - A brilliant, dynamic, and exciting recording that anyone could enjoy. I mean, this sounds like it could be officially released…not 100% perfect but I would not be as thrilled about it if it was perfect. I don’t need perfection, I need a good blend of excellent audio and nice atmosphere and this tape has that. Audience 7.7 - Distant and hissy, but Plant somehow can still be the loudest instrument in the building. Should you get this? Audience 7.5 A famous show, billed as “Electric Magic”, the band put on a marathon concert which is contained on these three discs…in average quality. That’s it. Legendary gig, great performance, average recording. Listen to Since I’ve Been Loving You, it will give you chills. Collectors will need this…historically huge. Audience 9.2 - Amazing atmosphere that the band completely catches and performs up to. The crowd is very responsive but does not intrude on the recording – even during clap-alongs which I normally hate but here is actually enhances the song! Fantastic all the way around, and there’s plenty of headroom left in the recording so if you increase frequency (if you have an EQ) or volume you won’t destroy the integrity of the sound. So blast away! Radio Broadcast 8.8 - A most welcome discovery! Insanely cool hearing this band play live in the USA. The material is compelling, the band is tight and very convincing although they needed some work on their stage banter ha ha! Very cool indeed! Soundboard 9.4 & Audience 8.6 - the first few discs are excellent soundboard which is cool because they are very early performances and there’s a lot to dive into there. The next couple of discs are good audience tapes, the first being a bit towards the back of a medium sized club, but it’s not bad. Overall it’s an interesting collection, really allows you to contemplate the artists changes over time, with band members, and compositions. Good stuff!
