Soundboard 9.5 - This is a brilliant recording, razor sharp and electric at a time when most music was becoming rather lame. Not saying Pat Benatar did not have her share of radio friendly numbers, but even those featured good, solid rock guitar that did not resemble anything else offered by mainstream top 40 at that time (aside for maybe The Cars and Foreigner…and Cheap Trick). FM Broadcast 9.5 - This is kind of like the Red Bull of rock in the mid 80’s. In hindsight, you could say it was cool that even when these guys had some very anthemic rock numbers (and some with cheesy lyrics), they at least had a heavier approach to the music. The sound quality is excellent here and it seems to me if you have any interest in mid 80’s hard rock/aor/metal, this band would be and should be on your radar and then by extension you would seek out something like this FM broadcast. Audience 9.3 - A solid recording in a small venue that is very intimate, in fact it sounds like the drums aren’t even going through the mains they sound so natural. Audience 8.6 - OK, so this is one you might not be too familiar with, but it’s from ’79 so you know you gotta have it…so what’s the catch? Does it suck? Naw man, this recording actually captures THE EVENT in a way that sounds so realistic you’d think you were there. Now, here’s the catch – poor taper’s gear just was not quite up to the challenge of the volume and so there’s the little tiniest bit of distortion that affects one very narrow piece of the middle bandwidth that thankfully is not the annoying kind of distortion, it’s not a deal breaker. It does mean you may not wish to crank this up too loud as the louder it gets the more that frequency announces its presence to your ears. That being said, if you want complete immersion this tape provides it and then some. For that reason I think you have to dive in, I did and I really do appreciate this kind of tape. MOR 1985 Audience 8.6 - A strong recording that gets off to a funky start (at one point a mic jack unplugs and one channel drops but it lasts only a minute). I prefer this to a dry soundboard to be honest. It’s not a perfect audience recording but it sure does deliver on energy and atmosphere! I like it. Tokyo 1987 Audience 8.7 - Nice atmosphere on this tape, and the audio comes through especially vocals and bass actually has a nice round sound to it. Guitars are not super distinct, but thankfully the solos are really soaring above and captured pretty well. I like the snare drum here, whoever was mixing this show really must have had a hard-on for the drummer ha ha! Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. I say dive in! Audience 8.4 - A little lo-fi here but guitar is up front followed by drums which you can hear well. Some tape hiss present, bass is in a good place not too boomy and complements the guitar sound well. Leslie is playing more fluid here, probably because RCMH is known for good acoustics so he must have had good feedback. Crowd is on his side, he owned New York without a doubt. I feel like this recording would benefit greatly from a good re-mastering, hiss reduction, etc. because it has a decent enough sonic foundation. It immerses you into the experience, with depth, clarity, dynamics, and atmosphere. What a tape! Get it. Boston 1970 Audience 8.4 - The separation of instruments here is rather dense, not muddy, just not to a degree one would prefer. The sound itself is not bad, I actually do hear every instrument I just want certain things prominent when it comes to this band…I really need more detail in the guitar solos. I still think this is a good one for the collection – the band is not afraid to stretch out and jam, they have tremendous freedom onstage and it shows. Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection. Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. A great find! Soundboard 8.8 - This tape exhibits some compression characteristics but is overall clear enough to enjoy. It doesn’t favor any one particular frequency, and does not have a large amount of bottom end. Audience 9.0 - This is a very fine recording no doubt about it, although there is some kind of audio artifact present at the extreme high almost like it might be from the main microphone (stage mic). So, I don’t think it is the tape, or taper’s gear. At first you may think it is almost like a noise reduction artifact but it is not that which you will agree when you hear the electric guitars. That’s probably the only thing you can knock this for, but even that is rather minor, the music is very present, great live mix too. Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. A party-like atmosphere permeates and the band is very good all throughout this 3 disc set. Great performances, each and every band member shines. Audience 8.3/8.4/8.8 - When listening to the first two discs, it would be easy to dismiss them right away as being inferior, but I encourage the listener to stick with them for a while. The first disc is not bad, the sound is loud and narrow but guitars and vocals are clear and extremely direct! That means you get to actually hear it, and it’s an early period gig in a small venue and these are few and far between. The second disc is a little further from the stage, but I get the music pretty well if somewhat noisily. Here the audio is reasonably balanced too, so drums very much there, as is guitar and vocals. I actually got into it once I adjusted. The third disc is the best of the three, with clarity and balance, and even some dynamic range. You can increase the volume and not damage your ear drums. All three discs are above average performances too, with the third disc being among the very best ever. A worthwhile collection here. This is the band's first platinum award, as they have now sold over a million copies of Shout At The Devil. When Tommy walks into his condo with his gold and platinum awards for the first time after the tour, his girlfriend Candice throws a plate at him smashing the glass frame of his gold award, after she becomes jealous over a photo she found of Tommy with some girl. Nikki takes his awards with him to the island of Nantucket, MA where he plans on meeting some girls, one of them actress Demi Moore who is working on the movie set of One Crazy Summer. Demi also shared a similar childhood to Nikki in many ways, with her father leaving before she was born, then being around drinking, arguing and beatings, and moving home a ridiculous amount of times. She greets Nikki as the prop plane lands, who in a wasted state, falls down the plane's steps onto the tarmac, smashing a bottle of Jack Daniels from his hand while his awards hit him in the head. Having been through Alcoholics Anonymous herself, Demi suggests the program to Nikki, who learns of it for the first time. -

Audience 7.9-8.3 - A tape that starts rough and ends rough but in the middle it is actually not bad. This is a taper that made this an event, the evening was captured with a genuine excitement which is epitomized by the introduction to the show by taper. I love that stuff. I like this tape because I understand now – it transcends the necessity for perfection because it happened in real time for the people who made this tape and there’s a twinkle of magic because you suddenly, for a split second, become them during the show. Audience 9.3 - I am primarily interested in 1969-1973 Stones but I gotta say, this band has become very sophisticated and very tight, from the playing, setlist construction, audience interaction, you can’t deny them their place at the top of Rock Royalty because they’ve not only earned it, they continue to do it. Audience 8.7 - This tape, when it first surfaced, was to many Kinks collectors the Holy Grail of live tapes. It marked the band’s triumphant return to the States, and the band was determined to make up for lost time. A fiery performance and a great capture. A tiny bit of tape chatter in the first track but it smooths out from there and is a real rocket ride! Audience 8.5 - A pretty clear but somewhat distant tape, with Ozzy being front and center followed by Randy and then some tin can drums and little to no real bottom end – but you do hear the notes played which makes this one to investigate as it is not very well known about. As I listen, I think the selling point is indeed how relatively clean and clear it is, a good capture all in all. Drums get a little better… the bottom end remains thin though. It’s not the greatest live mix or sound, but it’s a tape that delivers real magic despite itself. The Mick’s (both of ‘em) are the highlight, both are more prominent and both are on top of their game. Now, I always kind of wondered really what these guys were about, and history can now reveal all of that, but my take is that they certainly owed a lot to Rush – that said they took that general presentation to a more FM friendly place.
