• Audience 8.5 - A pretty clear but somewhat distant tape, with Ozzy being front and center followed by Randy and then some tin can drums and little to no real bottom end – but you do hear the notes played which makes this one to investigate as it is not very well known about. As I listen, I think the selling point is indeed how relatively clean and clear it is, a good capture all in all. Drums get a little better… the bottom end remains thin though. • Soundboard 9.7 - Amazing set featuring the nitro-fueled blues rock of Rory Gallagher on full glorious display. A decidedly heavy approach this time, but it seems odd that the audience embraced this yet boo’d Stevie Ray Vaughan mercilessly only a few short years later. • Audience 8.4 - What saves the recording is the fact that it is clear, like virtually no muddiness, although the sound mix itself lacks definition except for Steven and Joe who are like rays of light peering through your window. The drums are good too, all in all it is hard to say this is not a necessity, it may not be but it’s very interesting and certainly of good enough quality to keep you engaged. • Audience 8.7 - This tape, when it first surfaced, was to many Kinks collectors the Holy Grail of live tapes. It marked the band’s triumphant return to the States, and the band was determined to make up for lost time. A fiery performance and a great capture. A tiny bit of tape chatter in the first track but it smooths out from there and is a real rocket ride! • Audience 8.5 - Here is perhaps one of the best captures from the tour (not quite as good as Oakland or LA but this tape has some real power).  This recording seems to be rather close to the PA, but there’s no distortion. Tape is not overly wide ranging from high to low but there’s plenty of meat and a good amount of dynamics nonetheless. Certainly this is one to get. • Audience 7.9-8.3 - A tape that starts rough and ends rough but in the middle it is actually not bad. This is a taper that made this an event, the evening was captured with a genuine excitement which is epitomized by the introduction to the show by taper. I love that stuff. I like this tape because I understand now – it transcends the necessity for perfection because it happened in real time for the people who made this tape and there’s a twinkle of magic because you suddenly, for a split second, become them during the show. I can’t really explain it, but something happened while listening that made me understand what I was listening to beyond a rating. Make sense? THE ROLLING STONES Boston Garden Boston MA. Not only is it a good board tape, but it specifically showcases Terry’s playing in a way you don’t often get on other tapes of a band with this range of equipment. • Audience 8.4  - I think the draw is, when you are dealing with these old audience tapes that don’t have very wide dynamic range, is that as long as you get a solid guitar, and reasonable vocals, it’s going to appeal to collectors because what they want is the performance mainly – and I tend to agree because this is after all the peak period for the band. You can hear guitar, vocals, and keys in pretty decent clarity and forceful too – I see the value in this recording, a little rough around the edges when band is at full flight due to limitations with the recorder, but let me tell you I hung around, listened to the whole thing, and came away satisfied. It’s not too bad! Palasport, Genova, Italy March 11, 1973

  • Soundboard 9.0 - Interesting hearing this line up in such clarity,  it certainly allows you to make a better judgment on the music, which by the way is pretty damn good. It’s different, in some ways, but it is still very good. My advice is not to go into it thinking you are getting Black Sabbath – rather consider it a Tony Iommi side project, then it makes more sense and will grab you in a better way. • Audience 8.4 - The same taping crew that did the Ozzy Osbourne, and it sounds very similar but maybe a touch clearer. It’s a pretty good effort, especially when you consider the year, and what I mean is that the tape recording equipment used during most of the 80’s did not usually produce anything to write home about. So, overall, this is a really decent early period Def Leppard recording. DEF LEPPARD Music Mountain South Fallsburg, NY. • Audience 8.3 - One of those tapes that captures the power of the band, but does not deliver crisp definition…that being said, you must listen to this all the way through. It’s been cleaned up as best as could be and it delivers MUCH more audio than it ever did before prior to modern mastering techniques.  A worthy addition to collections. • Soundboard 8.8 - This tape shows some signs of age but it is holding its own and is strong in many aspects. The only thing that prevents the higher rating is that there is some “dirt” present, what I mean is just some extracurricular noise present in the mid band, nothing that destroys any enjoyment at all – it is a strong tape as I said, but for a soundboard you expect purity and this one is not pure. Still, I think the setlist answers the question “should I”?  Yes. You should. This is a kick ass show and the Zeppelin covers just put it over the top. Heart Waukegan, IL. • Soundboard 9.5 - A professional recording that has a real 1974 mix – sound engineers might understand what I am saying. Naw, I mean, it’s super clean and tight but it also has a certain kind of “dated” sound, and it really feels like a small venue to me…but these are PLUS marks!  It’s for those reasons I love it. • Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. • Audience 8.4 - A little lo-fi here but guitar is up front followed by drums which you can hear well. Some tape hiss present, bass is in a good place not too boomy and complements the guitar sound well. Leslie is playing more fluid here, probably because RCMH is known for good acoustics so he must have had good feedback. Crowd is on his side, he owned New York without a doubt. I feel like this recording would benefit greatly from a good re-mastering, hiss reduction, etc. because it has a decent enough sonic foundation. By the way I should point out that this has been listed as a soundboard elsewhere, it's great don't get me wrong but I am not 100% sure of the claim. In hindsight, you could say it was cool that even when these guys had some very anthemic rock numbers (and some with cheesy lyrics), they at least had a heavier approach to the music. The sound quality is excellent here and it seems to me if you have any interest in mid 80’s hard rock/aor/metal, this band would be and should be on your radar and then by extension you would seek out something like this FM broadcast. There are some tasty and snarling moments that make you think “what was the audience thinking during this solo?”  You know, the early 80’s typical Prince fan probably had no interest in fuzzed out Hendrix style soaring guitar solos mixed in with their pop/soul/funk music. • Soundboard 8.8 - This is more than likely exactly what you would have heard had you bought this comp back in the 80’s. It has remained true to the original 1972 US Tour boot, which as you know gathers the soundboards from the tour and compiles them in such a way so as to present a dream set list (no song duplication). Sourced from a variety of shows, this is basically a road tape for lack of a better description. The Rolling Stones North American Tour Summer 1972 Tracks recorded at Vancouver, Houston, Ft. • Audience 8.5 - Certainly a mainstay title in the huge catalog of live Metallica boots. Why?  Because it is the classic line-up and it sounds reasonably good, even though the twin guitar attack is not clearly defined. The band was making a statement around this time, and that much is certainly evident with these Ride The Lightening tour tapes. Metallica Stockholm, Sweden 12-12-1984 1. Ecstacy Of Gold 2. • FM Broadcast 9.0 and Audience 8.8 - Both recordings capture the band well enough to appreciate that they were at least attempting to craft their own sound and style. The FM is cleaner and better separation of instruments but the audience tape ain’t all that bad. Giuffria 2/20/85 Peabodys Down Uder WMMS Coffee Break Cleveland, OH 1. Do Me Right 2. • Audience 8.6 -A sonic blast not held back by some of the typical limitations such as the actual venue itself which is notorious for sounding more like a gymnasium than a concert hall. Tape cannot be faulted for being muddy, it’s not very clean, but that is due to proximity to PA and unprofessional gear. That being said, the tape scores high in terms of sheer electricity and fun…once your ears adjust, yeah, but what a ride!  Band did not know they were being taped by someone so I guess this is a pretty honest performance. They sound very primitive, underground, gritty…and I guess that is why Cooper made changes because perhaps that style and sound was getting outdated on such a large caliber tour. Personally, I much prefer this honest, maybe if a bit more crude, band sound. • FM Broadcast 9.2 - A great recording that captures the atmosphere and the thrilling musicianship brightly, if maybe a touch too boldly on the meters…no worries, there’s nothing to interfere with your listening pleasure. The band…did not know much about them but they sure have the chops. I get a little bit of a sort of Whitesnake influence, but not any of the trademark cheesiness. Jake E. Lee is very acrobatic without unnecessary shredding, I would not call his playing shred at all in fact. It’s actually quite tasteful and great use of effects…thrilling at times, and very few dive bombs and when he does it’s in and out, they don’t overstay their welcome. I could say that for the songs too, they all have good balance and set up all the solos nicely. They even cover Purple Haze…umm…maybe they should have left that one alone. But everything else is tops. • Audience 8.8 - Quite the find!  This is a strong and clear tape, although I sense the taper is quite new at it because for starters he manages only part of the show (although it’s most of the show) and second he says things (he’s clear on the recording, but thankfully not too chatty) that indicate he’s a noob. The audience around him gets into the show but are not overly intrusive in the recording. I found the guitar solo portion of the show to be the most electric as it sounds so close and clear…very cool! I like the I’m So Glad/Somebody Get Me A Doctor combo because it is one of those rare improvisational moments that you don’t know where it will go. Taper loves to stop and start too close to the songs sometimes cutting off endings it’s infuriating (and again indicates he’s a beginner) but thanks go to him for doing this one regardless. • Audience 8.4 - Not a great one, but certainly indicative of the band and their sound in 1994, a year that I do not have a plethora of recordings from…also it is a Houston show and since I am from there…Good enough! • Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. Kind of neat to listen to this show, it’s a lot higher on the energy scale than most of the other Ziggy recordings believe it or not. DAVID BOWIE - Empire Theatre Edinburgh, Scotland May 19, 1973 1. • Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy!  It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before.
