• Soundboard 9.3 - I was unfamiliar with the live sound of Stevie Wonder having only heard his studio output, I was happy to hear that he and his band really could jam. • SDBRD/AUD Disc 1 SDBRD 9.2 excellent material that features some later (’78) performances but seems mostly to be 1974. Unfortunately the tapes were not adequately annotated. Disc 2 Audience 8.8 A very decent tape that has a great live energy to it. I almost prefer this over the board tape, it just captures more of the mania happening on stage at a SAHB concert.  Disc 3 Audience 8.5 The recording seems to emanate from a more distant point from the stage and as such lacks the power and punch your ears crave, but it is not a muddy recording, you can hear the band well enough, just not much in the way of dynamics or power. • Audience 9.4 - This is a killer!  First, it’s new to circulation and second, it’s fantastic sounding. Taper was right in the sweet spot with excellent gear, got the whole show…and yup, it’s a wonderful performance so this one checks all the boxes. Yes Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA. • Mahavishnu Orchestra Central Park 1972 Audience 8.6 - A somewhat percussive recording that has loads of middle band punch making for a sound that contains fierce kinetic energy. The performance is astounding, the recording adds an element of immediacy, with the drums especially sounding like they are placed right next to you. Very cool. Mahavishnu Orchestra Munchen 1972 Professional TV audio 9.3 - This is a nice one, and it is not suffering from TV compression although the “atmosphere” here is somewhat muted as if it was in a studio setting and not live in front of an audience. Either way, no bother, it’s great. Mahavishnu Orchestra Disc 1 Central Park N.Y.C. New York, U.S.A. • Soundboard 9.3 - OK, let me explain why the high rating here. Technically speaking, the actual audio quality is more like 8.8 to be honest…but this tape is so MUCH more than that and deserves a super high rating because of it. Let me explain: First of all, the audio is good enough to get excellent separation of instruments, that allows you to hear the detail of the guitar and drums, with a driving keyboard and clear vocals…and that is important because a certain new vocalist is hoping to impress in front of a London audience – and he does, they ALL do in a major way especially Blackmore. See, Richie is one of those guitarists that really goes for it, and sometimes it works and sometimes he is probably not inspired as much so it falls a little flat…not here! He’s simply brilliant and when I hear him like this I remember to include him on my all time greatest guitarists list ha ha!  This rating is for the spectacular event this gig is, and how happy we should be to hear it clearly. • Audience 8.7 - A good recording with what seems to be a little middle band compression but not too much. So, it’s smooth low end and louder upper middle and highs but softer middle band, that is not necessarily bad, it’s just lacking in that punch factor. It is though, as stated, a pretty decent recording. Oh, and the last song of the evening is “Don’t Fear The Reaper” so VERY cool to hear another live version of that. You know why BOC fans love the live recordings? Because with 5 guitar players at any given time, you just want to hear what they do with these amazing songs on stage. • Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant?  Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside?  You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays?  Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it. • Black Sabbath Los Angeles 1980 Audience 8.9 - This is a much welcomed recording of perhaps the best post Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. 1980 was an interesting year, Ozzy making classic “solo” albums with his new band and Sabbath beginning a new era with a new singer in Ronnie James Dio and neither the worse for it.  This is a great show, in great quality. Black Sabbath Vienna 1980 Audience 8.3 -Unfortunately this recording suffers from many ailments, mainly in the range and dynamics, but what it does offer is a previously uncirculated (and complete) show from Sabbath in Europe during the very crucial 1980 tour with Dio as new front man. This is what I get from this show- Dio is very committed to bringing the audience in to the spectacle…the performance is killer in every respect. The sound quality is not trash, but I want Dio more clear than this because he is really on his game this night. I think this tape belongs in this set because it doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of the set, it offers the collector a new tape of a complete show from 1980 and that is enough for me. In October of 1973, Bill Aucoin, who had witnessed several KISS concerts during the summer months, approached the group to become their personal manager. KISS hired Aucoin, and subsequently inked a recording contract with Casablanca Records on November 1, 1973. KISS was the first act signed to Neil Bogart's new label. KISS began recording tracks for their debut LP at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during Autumn of '73. On December 31st, KISS performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, opening for Blue Öyster Cult and Iggy Pop, with the hyped New Years Eve gig billed as the band's official industry premiere. This has gone down in KISStory as the first time Gene would accidentally ignite his hair while breathing fire at the end of "Firehouse!" "Dirty Livin'" extended version wasn't very widely known at the time of release, possibly because it was only released in countries like Italy, Germany, France and Mexico. Soundboard 8.6 The board mix favors only one half of the band to the near exclusion of the others but does level out some as it progresses. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace!  The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce.
  • Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. That being said, Bowie is CLEARLY heard as are guitar leads, so it makes for an overall nice experience and worth grabbing. DAVID BOWIE Madison Square Garden New York, NY. • Audience 8.7 - This is a “realistic” sounding tape, by that I don’t mean it sounds like it was recorded on a Realistic tape machine, rather it sounds like what your ears may have heard had you been at the show sitting towards the back of the hall. Is that bad?  Not necessarily, because the tape sounds pleasing to the ears. Good, round, atmospheric…only flaw is the detail is missing. I can’t make out individual band members except the main gultars, bass, drums, and vocals. Other instruments come and go during the show as they get a spotlight on them, but I rate this show as very good because it’s so relaxing and pleasant overall and deserves a real deep dive into its contents. • Audience 8.5 - What this tape represents is an almost uncanny time warp back in time, the sound that the taper captured is amazing – the mix and separation of instruments is what damages an otherwise exceptional sounding tape. With that being said, it’s got a lot to appreciate regardless of the actual music contained herein. For instance, once the soundman dials the mix in better, the music does sound MUCH better and guitar rises slightly higher up front making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The sound of this tape is good, with a punchy upper midrange but not uncomfortable, and roaring “low end” and I say that because while bass is not well defined, it certainly is present in the lower frequencies here. This tape will grow on you, and I promise once you start, and get past the first song (where the live mix is getting dialed in), you’ll find yourself more and more sucked in to it. • Audience 8.2 - A loud and raucous tape, with a band of noise in the upper mid frequency that prevents better separation of instruments. Saving grace?  Duane is the clearest instrument on this recording – in fact it is his guitar that soars over the sound to the degree that you almost inevitably focus solely on him throughout.  As it happens, Gregg’s vocals are next up in the mix. • Soundboard 8.9 - Kinda cool when you get these board tapes that pan a guitar, and then one other lead instrument to the other side, which in this case is keyboards. I think this allows for an examination of the instrument in question, so you might find yourself listening once and concentrating on guitar, then another time you’ll give drums and keys more attention…and that is why this show might have you coming back several times for more.  Interesting!
