• Audience 8.6 - Not a bad tape at all, and seeing how there’s now all of what, one known live tape of this band I would say that is kind of cool. The band?  Well they are in their final incarnation here, and playing is very loose and experimental…but honestly they needed to ditch the flautist as he contributes not only nothing, but he’s in the way. Let the guitarist do his thing ‘cause he seems to be able to turn on the switch and lay down bursts of awesome psychedelic insanity. • Soundboard 9.3 - An interesting tape because it’s from soon after losing Duane, and I don’t think there’s many tapes from that period immediately after his death. • Soundboard 9.2 - Again we find Lou and company blazing his way across Europe and leaning on some old, and some new…but mostly older tunes which always work well because there is so much room for the band to stretch out. • Truly somewhat of an oddball release, this album stems from a long lost rehearsal session by a bunch of stoned South African teenagers in the late 60's. Not much was even known about them, not even at the time as the band never gigged or recorded a legitimate album. Still, the music reverberates with manic acid rock intensity. You've been warned!
  • Audience 8.7 - This recording is better than it has a right to be, after all it is in a big stadium, early 70’s so the gear, if it doesn’t weigh 80 pounds, has to be cheap crap…but, dang it this sounds cool!  Granted, instrument separation isn’t great (it is good enough), and it isn’t super close up, but all that still does not detract from how stompin’ this is. • Studio Quality 9.5 - I am thankful for this because it has further taught me to appreciate and respect Clapton’s musicality, and his desire to remain true to himself first and foremost. If you listen to this music without preconditions you realize it’s pretty good and if the man’s name was not Eric Clapton, you’d be thinking this guy should be much bigger. • Audience 9.4 - Before you write off the late 80’s Eric Clapton, you REALLY need to look deeper for a minute. This performance, and this recording, clearly demonstrates the reason why one should examine the totality of an artist’s career, particularly if said artist was as prolific and talented as Mr. Clapton. The edgy, electrified sound of Clapton’s Cream days is gone and that is ok so long as you still get the TALENT, and many of Clapton’s performances (at least on tape) sometimes lacked the elements that you would have hoped for, despite his undeniable songwriting prowess…it was the PLAYING of the guitar, and the sound of said guitar, that we craved. Here, along with his pal Mark Knopfler, all of that is delivered and the audio quality does the whole thing justice because it is excellent. I think playing with Mark elevated Eric’s game. Hearing them do “Money For Nothing” together was cool, and Mark decided to sing in his own “bluesy” way in deference to Eric. Sweet! Eric Clapton feat. • Soundboard 8.8 - A very old sounding tape that received a recent “facelift” giving it some more punch while reducing tape noise (without compromising any high end). • Audience 8.4 - They should call this tape “Noise In The Attic” ha ha! Actually, I am being very tough here, it’s a bright tape, it favors high end but is not too screechy…I just need more low end personally. That being said – vocals are in the front here, followed by Joe Perry, so that is crucial to this being a worthwhile listen. Taper has to hide his gear once or twice, so you occasionally hear the inside of his coat. Not too many 1975 period tapes out there, I am thankful for this one…you will be too, especially when the coast is clear and taper brings the mic back out (makes for a really refreshing audio moment!). This is really clear and bright, I am having a tough time finding things to complain about here. • This collection has been remastered and despite that, there are still one or two tracks that show the ravages of time. One can only assume some of it was not saved, as was the BBC’s policy of not giving a shit, therefore it was up to fans to record from a radio broadcast themselves. Most of this does sound very good, a worthy effort for sure and some of this I’d never heard before. The Who - BBC Sessions 1965-1971 {Remastered & Complete} Disc 1 01. Good Lovin' 02. 'Pete interview #1' 03. Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere 04. Leaving Here 05. Just You and Me, Darling 06. 'Pete interview #2' Recorded: Aeolian Hall studio 2, Bond Street, London UK; Monday 24 + Tuesday 25 May 1965 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 29 May 1965 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Sources: transcription disc Notes: The Who's second session for the BBC actually appears to have been a double-date. On the 24th, a three-hour session produced: 'Good Lovin'', 'Anyway Anyhow Anywhere', 'I Don't Mind' and 'Daddy Rolling Stone'. The next afternoon they performed: 'Leaving Here', 'Please Please Please' and 'Just You and Me, Darling'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription discs #31 & #34. The song selection here is dominated by soul covers picked by Roger, who was still the undisputed leader of the group. Yet, it was Pete who got to do the interviews and talk about the group's beginnings and prospects. 07. The Good's Gone 08. 'Pete interview' 09. My Generation 10. La La La Lies 11. Baby Don't You Do It Recorded: Aeolian Hall studio 1, Bond Street, London UK; Monday 22 November 1965 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 27 November 1965 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Sources: 01-04 transcription disc; 05 off-air recording Note: The third session was again recorded live in studio and produced completed takes of: 'It's Not True', 'The Good's Gone', 'La La La Lies', 'My Generation' and 'Baby Don't You Do It'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #57 and an off-air recording made by a fan. By now, Pete's role as the main provider of song material has been firmly established. 12. Man With Money 13. 'Pete interview' 14. Substitute 15. Dancing In the Street 16. The sessions tapes were once again wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #73 and an off-air recording made by a fan. 17. 'Intro' 18. Disguises 19. 'Pete interview' 20. I'm A Boy 21. So Sad About Us Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, London UK; Tuesday 13 September 1966 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 17 September 1966 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Source: transcription disc Note: Fifth session, which produced: 'I'm A Boy', 'Disguises', 'Heatwave', 'So Sad About Us' and a cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's 'On The Road Again'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #99. In an attempt to control the mixing balance, John suddenly turned his bass up in the middle of 'Disguises'. The balance engineer on the session did not bother correcting this and as a result the sound turns into a muddy mess from that point on (with the mixdown compressor working on overload). 'So Sad About Us' was left off the official 'BBC Sessions' release from 2000 for unknown reasons. 22. Run Run Run 23. Boris The Spider 24. 'Pete interview' 25. Happy Jack 26. See My Way Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, London UK; Tuesday 17 January 1967 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 21 January 1967 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Bill Bebb Source: transcription disc Note: For this sixth session, the band recorded: 'Happy Jack', 'Run, Run, Run', 'Boris The Spider', 'See My Way', 'Don't Look Away' and 'So Sad About Us'. The sessions tapes were once again wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #117. Disc 2 01. 'Intro' 02. I Can See For Miles 03. Pictures of Lily [Alternate Mono Mix] Recording & Broadcast Production: De Lane Lea Studio, Kingsway, London UK; Tuesday 10 October 1967 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Top Gear'; Sunday 15 October 1967 Producers: Bernie Andrews/Bev Philips Sources: 01-02,07,09-10: tape 03-06: transcription disc w/ patches from tape sources 08: off-air recording Note: This seventh session marked the first time the BBC allowed any musical act to record for them outside their own studios. Recorded on this day were five jingles, 'My Way' (not broadcast) and alternate versions of 'Pictures Of Lily' & 'A Quick One While He's Away'. Also readied for the broadcast were early mixes of 'I Can See For Miles'*, 'Relax', 'Our Love Was', 'I Can't Reach You', 'Summertime Blues' & 'Someone's Coming'. These songs were already recorded on an earlier date and would eventually appear on official Who product with a slightly different mix (although it took more than 30 years for 'Summertime Blues'). This is the first Who BBC session that has at least partially survived on tape on the BBC archives, as the jingles and 'A Quick One' do not appear on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #157 & #160, yet appear in crystal clear quality on the official release. Strangely enough, the two TOTP discs seem to have been the source for the other tracks on the official CD, all of which are marred by a voiceover. The versions here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of the ending of 'Our Love Was'), for the first time ever. As a bonus, I have added a clean mono mix of 'Lily' with better fidelity than the BBC source which has not circulated before. * The 45RPM & BBC versions both contain a heavy bass dub that was imposed on the mono album master. The dubs differ, to ensure the BBC got a unique master recording. 11. 'Pete interview' 12. 'Heaven and Hell' was later released in a slightly reworked version as a B-side to 'Summertime Blues'. Like the October 1967 session, this one is believed to have survived on tape on the BBC archives. But even so, the official album used the "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #286 as its source for Tr. 01-04, with voiceover over the intro's and outro's. The versions presented here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of 'Seeker') for the first time. 21. I Don't Even Know Myself Recorded: Olympic Studio, Barnes, London UK; 1971 Source: tape Note: This one is a bit of a mystery. No details about it are given on the official BBC session CD. It is the same take that was released in 1971 as the B-side to 'Won't Get Fooled Again' but here we get a clean mono mix that differs in a few places from the released version. Believed to have been recorded in 1971 during the Who's Next sessions.
  • Audience 8.8 - It’s hard to express exactly what makes a particular recording or gig special, mainly because it is all very subjective. But, I have been collecting music since 1982, so I feel I have earned some credibility ha ha! So let me tell you why this one is special. Placed right in front of the main P.A. speakers, this sound is brutal. Sure, the first 45 seconds are a mess, but it gets better, and man, is this a rocking good time!  The sound is ferocious, threatening at any moment to destroy the tape completely, but it doesn’t. It’s hot, it’s loud, but it’s also very real, as if happening at the very moment you are hearing it. The Who in 1970, in Detroit (Rock City!), playing Tommy (and other great tracks) in front of an appreciative audience (without incident!).  Everyone sounds great here, and you have a front row seat. • Audience 9.5 - Astounding! This, this is beyond devastating. Personally, I have to put this right up there with hearing Museo Rosenbach for the first time. How do I arrive at this?  Because, in 2021 you sort of don’t expect this old 70’s era Italian prog band to move the needle other than just reliving past glories. Oh how wrong that is…for starters, their SOUND is massive, powerful, dynamic, energetic, and TIGHT. Their material is amazing, complex, unpredictable, moving, and absolutely just devastating. I challenge anyone to find a modern band that can pull something like this off with such panache. Heavy is more than just distortion folks…it’s a lot of stuff and these guys just know what heaviness is from decades of experience. • Audience 8.6 - In contrast to the Finland show, this one doesn't have the boominess but it is thinner sounding, however it is very clear and Kay is much more audible. Guitar, drums, and vocals very clear albeit thin. I found the bass to be lovely, round, very cool to hear such detail! This is NOT a muddy recording, and being 1970 that means you get the classic songs performed close to the records. • Miami 2019 Audience 8.8 - Tremendous atmosphere while retaining good and clear sound. It’s understandable being that the band plays enormous stadiums that you may have problems getting a solid capture, but provided that you aren’t in the nose bleeds, and your gear is decent, you can really get something worthwhile on tape with PA systems being so good. This is one such job. Charlie’s last gig with The Stones, and thankfully a good capture of the event. St. Louis 2021 Audience 9.2 - This one is right in the pocket!  Solid low end, with some genuine gut punching drums and bass without being boomy at all.  Vocals, nicely positioned in the mix, and both guitars are clear.  Really I have to say this is a joy to listen to and doesn’t have to be a soundboard to qualify. • Central Park 1971 Audience 8.6 - The limitations of this tape are mainly the over-riding level of tape his present, although it’s been re-mastered to the degree that much was removed without sacrificing highs. The actual recording is not bad, and even with some hiss, the tape does not sound like it is multiple gens down. Highs are good, lows are present, mix is not terrible (guitars are somewhat low, but this is a live mix situation and not the taping). Copenhagen 1972 Audience 8.8 - A very clear tape with an emphasis on high end crispness (not brittle or irritating, just very clear in the high end), mix favors vocals, drums, then keys and guitars in the same range. An enjoyable tape! • Audience 9.0 - This is a heroic taping accomplishment, to be able to get virtually all of the performers in really nice quality, it’s an effort to be admired. While lacking super-definition, it does have good dynamics and clarity overall, it’s not thin, and it is not muddy. It’s pretty darn good!
