• Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. Even if you're a collector of every individual show this is still a keeper to have, one reason being the unreleased track on disc 5, "Nowhere Else To Turn", sure it's a Ray Wilson-led Genesis track, but one of the very few unreleased studio tracks by Genesis to have leaked to the collector's. • Audience 8.5 - Good solid recording of what sounds like it may be an outdoor show. Atmosphere is great! Love it.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - This is not a pure board and by that I mean it sounds like some of the instruments are not direct patches through the board onto the tape. It sounds like a hybrid where some of it is a direct feed and some of it is mic’d up. You can tell it is something like that when listening to the difference between the keyboards and vocals, and drums (especially the kick).  Either way it’s great. • Soundboard 8.8 - A fine performance of The Lamb here, sound quality is very good and mix is very good. You can enjoy this one, more than once!
  • Audience 8.4 - One of the better early Italian shows, bass maybe pushing hard, but it’s clear and energetic. Lovely stuff!
  • Audience 8.5 - Tape is a little hissy, but it is still a clear recording where you hear a lot of separation between instruments and “air” or “headroom” which allows music a chance to unfold and show peaks and valleys. Very good, not great, but very good.
  • Audience 8.8 - A very nice effort, sounds like the taper had pretty good gear. I hear a little bit of distortion in a very specific place in the middle band, not anything to ruin the experience but it is present and sounds like someone made an effort to clean it up in remastering. This is a worthwhile listen. Genesis Sports Arena, San Diego, CA March 27, 1977 Band line-up Phil Collins - vocals, drums Steve Hackett - guitar Mike Rutherford - bass, guitar Tony Banks - keyboards Chester Thompson - drums Total Time = 01:56:31 Disc 1 01 Squonk 02 One For The Vine 03 Robbery, Assault & Battery 04 Your Own Special Way 05 Firth of Fifth 06 The Carpet Crawlers 07 In That Quiet Earth 08 Afterglow Disc 2 09 Eleventh Earl of Mar 10 Supper's Ready 11 Dance On A Volcano 12 Drum Duet 13 Los Endos 14 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (w/The Musical Box Closing)
  • Audience 9.3 - A very wide and airy recording that you instantly know the second you hear it that taper is no noob, this is a pro job and stands up to scrutiny well. I could not find that much to complain about except maybe it’s just a tad back in the seats but that just allows for more air and atmospherics which are all here and well captured. Genesis Sports Arena San Diego, CA April 15, 1978 Disc 1 01 Eleventh Earl of Mar 02 In The Cage 03 Burning Rope 04 Ripples 05 Deep In The Motherlode 06 The Fountain Of Salmacis 07 Down And Out 08 One For The Vine Disc 2 09 Squonk 10 Say It's Alright Joe 11 The Lady Lies 12 The Story Of Romeo & Juliet 13 Cinema Show 14 Afterglow 15 Follow You, Follow Me 16 Dance On A Volcano 17 Drum Duet 18 Los Endos 19 I Know What I Like
  • Audience 8.7 - This recording has an overall decent quality to it but somewhere in the mid frequency band there is a small amount of clutter that seems to be more noticeable when heavy bass is played. Otherwise the audio can be remarkably clear, but I don’t think this slight flaw (probably in the mic that was used) ruins the recording; it’s not “glaring”, just there. Re-mastering the audio helped to notch out the offending frequency making it a lot better, so go for it, it’s pretty good. • Santa Monica 1974 Audience 8.7 - A tape that takes a song to balance out and adjust but once it gets going is quite good. Some signs of age, but it has held up reasonably well and makes a nice addition to any collection. Be aware there is a tape situation during Dancing With The Moonlit Knight where the sound phases back and forth across the speakers, sounding as if the show was in quadraphonic, and the tape machine struggled but it lasts only a couple of minutes.  Not a complete show, we only have 47 minutes but it’s better to have this than nothing at all. Quebec City 1974 Audience 8.9 - A very clear and strong tape that does take a minute to settle in, with tapers carrying on occasionally but eventually chilling out…they don’t annoy too much thank goodness! The performance here is stellar, the audience very responsive. A memorable evening. • Soundboard 9.8 - A soundboard that captures lightning in a bottle! So it’s near perfect in balance, and nicely widen open in dynamics while at the same time leaving intact some of the open stadium atmospherics (most notable in between songs or during announcements). Either way you slice it this is a truly great recording and performance that every collector would want in the collection. • Audience 8.3 - Decent recording that has some warmth to it.
  • Audience 8.5 - A thin-ish recording, but it is pretty clear and thus can be appreciated. It’s a really fine performance too. Genesis Ambassador Theatre St. Louis, MO April 23, 1976 01 Dance On A Volcano 02 Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 03 Fly On A Windshield 04 Carpet Crawlers 05 Cinema Show 06 Robbery, Assault And Battery 07 White Mountain 08 Firth Of Fifth 09 Entangled 10 Squonk 11 Supper’s Ready 12 I Know What I Like 13 Los Endos 14 It > Watcher Of The Skies
  • Audience 8.9 - A strong tape here, with very open, spacious sound and pleasant high end. It could benefit from more bottom but it’s not what I would call “thin” sounding. GENESIS Johanneshov Isstadion Stockholm, Sweden June 4, 1977 Disc 1 01. -Squonk 02. -One For The Vine 03. -Robbery Assault And Battery 04. -Inside And Out 05. -Firth Of Fifth 06. -Carpet Crawlers 07. -In That Quiet Earth 08. -Afterglow Disc 2 09. -I Know What I Like 10. -Eleventh Earl Of Mar 11. -Supper's Ready 12. -Dance On A Volcano - Los Endos 13. -The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - The Musical Box (closing section)
  • Audience 9.2 - Just wonderful audience capture that really does a fine job of getting the entire audio spectrum including solid punchy lows and well defined mids and highs. Very well done!
  • Audience 8.5 - A touch of tape saturation but pretty powerful sounding and the drums sound great!
  • Audience 8.3 - Not a common tape, the sound holds up well throughout, so taper knew what he was doing.
  • Audience 8.4 - Certainly a keeper here, a well recorded, and clean tape of the fledgling Genesis touring behind their first LP. Fascinating document!
  • Soundboard 9.6 - Just fantastic! I have to believe this was recorded for possible future official release, it’s just that good.
  • Soundboard 9.7 - A good, bright sounding board and not completely lifeless and flat.
  • Soundboard 9.0 - A good one, although not as full bodied as you would expect but I’m being picky.
  • Audience 8.8 - Previously available as a single track, Watcher Of The Skies was merely a taste of a tantalizing recording that has now been painstakingly restored from the original master cassette and it reveals much more than collectors could have imagined. A really good tape it is, with a nice intimate clarity (relative to the overall mix) of vocals, and a satisfying “thwack” of the drums…I found myself mesmerized by this show and especially a sparkling rendition of “Supper’s Ready”.

  • Audience 9.0 - This band is certainly an acquired taste for many, but every ear can agree to the quality of this recording. Airy but right there in a very comfortable mid range with very detailed high end and a smooth, round bass. Terrific!

    GENTLE GIANT – Cheltenham, England 1972 (1CD)

Original price was: $16.49.Current price is: $5.00.
Audience 7.5 - A tape that struggles to get better, like you keep expecting it to suddenly open up because it isn’t bad once the taper gets his levels set. It maybe hovers too close to the bottom, but you get the sounds of everything on stage, maybe vocals a little behind the mix but so what? It’s Gentle Giant, you want the music parts mainly. I think fans can appreciate this early gig.
  • Aud 8.3 - Surprisingly clear, at full volume there’s maybe some crowding as drums fight for attention in the mix, but basically what you have here is a great idea of what an early 70’s GG concert would have sounded like. Realistic, and the band is just so good, more rocking and less quirky maybe.
  • CD 1,2, 3, and 5 Audience 8.7-9.0 and CD 4 Soundboard 9.3 - Solid audience tapes used for the bulk of this set, most are not much more than a half point difference in ratings with the final disc being the best. All are good representations of the live Gentle Giant during these touring years. • CD 1 Audience 8.8 - A very good, bright, well balanced recording. Most welcomed because for me, it’s this time period (actually 1970-73) of the band I like the most. CD 2 Audience 8.1 - A somewhat flat, and a little bit muffled recording. I can still hear everything, it lacks dynamic range, but I did not find it annoyingly so, just when compared to disc 1 this one sounds lifeless. • Audience 9.2 - A wide and natural sounding recording. Music here is very present, very clear, and the atmosphere is palpable. This show in not complete either, missing the Ravi Shankar set (so what). George is not horse, he is just dark. • Audience 8.9 - Sounding almost like a board tape with little audience interference and a good, immediate sound, emphasis on mid range punch. Excellent!
  • Studio Quality 9.3 - Is this actually the album/albums that George wanted to be released posthumously?  Probably not, but certainly they are based on the idea he had for his “Leg End” finale. Good stuff and interesting to listen to!  BTW the text on the back cover is rather difficult to read so best to use this information and save yourself from the squinty-eyes!

  • Audience 8.8 - A large hall with a lot of atmosphere but the recording thankfully was handled with care by the tapers. Not super close, but not nosebleed, levels are perfect, and the stereo effect is nice. Audio quality is decent, giving you a pretty solid idea of what you would have been hearing with your own ears if you were there.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - A newly remastered version of the matinee soundboard show in all it’s glory restored – with bonus material from Seattle, this is well worth re-examining because I found it to be a really pro job, and you don’t have to suffer through the inferior audience tape thrown in because quite honestly there would be no point at all.
