Audience 8.8 - A very decent recording for the vintage. Small club atmosphere permeates which gives this recording the legendary status it deserves. Audience 8.8 - It’s hard to express exactly what makes a particular recording or gig special, mainly because it is all very subjective. But, I have been collecting music since 1982, so I feel I have earned some credibility ha ha! So let me tell you why this one is special. Placed right in front of the main P.A. speakers, this sound is brutal. Sure, the first 45 seconds are a mess, but it gets better, and man, is this a rocking good time! The sound is ferocious, threatening at any moment to destroy the tape completely, but it doesn’t. It’s hot, it’s loud, but it’s also very real, as if happening at the very moment you are hearing it. The Who in 1970, in Detroit (Rock City!), playing Tommy (and other great tracks) in front of an appreciative audience (without incident!). Everyone sounds great here, and you have a front row seat. Audience 9.0 - This is a heroic taping accomplishment, to be able to get virtually all of the performers in really nice quality, it’s an effort to be admired. While lacking super-definition, it does have good dynamics and clarity overall, it’s not thin, and it is not muddy. It’s pretty darn good! Central Park 1971 Audience 8.6 - The limitations of this tape are mainly the over-riding level of tape his present, although it’s been re-mastered to the degree that much was removed without sacrificing highs. The actual recording is not bad, and even with some hiss, the tape does not sound like it is multiple gens down. Highs are good, lows are present, mix is not terrible (guitars are somewhat low, but this is a live mix situation and not the taping). Copenhagen 1972 Audience 8.8 - A very clear tape with an emphasis on high end crispness (not brittle or irritating, just very clear in the high end), mix favors vocals, drums, then keys and guitars in the same range. Radio/TV Broadcasts 9.4 - I have learned to trust most Prince titles now, generally speaking there is great care taken to preserve the fidelity, to obtain master sources, and to package appropriately. That seems only fitting when dealing with an artists’ of Prince’s caliber…and I mean that most sincere. The list of contents for this title is extremely long and extensive and I did not write it up. Audience 8.8/9.3 - So, you know how huge the O2 Arena is, right? Well it sounds like a huge arena, but aside from the large mega stadium ambience, this is not that bad at all. It’s what you call “immersive” because you really can imagine yourself there. The audio quality itself is very good, as far as the tonality and levels, etc. The “live mix” is typical of an event like this, tons of atmosphere, party vibe (with about 15,000 of your closest friends), and Prince as always delivering the goods. The after show audio is extremely well done, sounding quite intimate and very warm. Audience 8.7 - This tape is surprisingly clear, it is not super dynamic but it is nice and clear. It’s almost like a REALLY good AM radio broadcast. It has a narrow sound field, but it is comfortable there, and comfortable to your ears. Phil sounds like he’s singing right next to you, pretty cool. Soundboard 9.3 - OK, let me explain why the high rating here. Technically speaking, the actual audio quality is more like 8.8 to be honest…but this tape is so MUCH more than that and deserves a super high rating because of it. Let me explain: First of all, the audio is good enough to get excellent separation of instruments, that allows you to hear the detail of the guitar and drums, with a driving keyboard and clear vocals…and that is important because a certain new vocalist is hoping to impress in front of a London audience – and he does, they ALL do in a major way especially Blackmore. See, Richie is one of those guitarists that really goes for it, and sometimes it works and sometimes he is probably not inspired as much so it falls a little flat…not here! He’s simply brilliant and when I hear him like this I remember to include him on my all time greatest guitarists list ha ha! This rating is for the spectacular event this gig is, and how happy we should be to hear it clearly. Audience 8.4 - So, first the good news. This recording is much better than the Dublin ’83 show. Why is that significant? Because there are precious few live recordings of any kind of quality highlighting this short lived period with Gillan. I don’t know about you, but I think this material and the sound of the band during this time period is just awesome. I really would have loved more of this…but alas it was not meant to be. The downside is that the recording is mainly from Geezer’s side of the stage, so you are going to get an earful of Geezer, and that is not a deal breaker but what sucks is that Tony sounds weak in comparison. Another upside? You can hear Ian Gillan over the wall of sound, and therein lies the main reason why this tape deserves a listen. Will it get repeated plays? Probably not…but I was happy to be able to get another chance to hear Ian Gillan live with Black Sabbath and I am better for it. Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. Audience 8.5 - What this tape represents is an almost uncanny time warp back in time, the sound that the taper captured is amazing – the mix and separation of instruments is what damages an otherwise exceptional sounding tape. With that being said, it’s got a lot to appreciate regardless of the actual music contained herein. For instance, once the soundman dials the mix in better, the music does sound MUCH better and guitar rises slightly higher up front making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The sound of this tape is good, with a punchy upper midrange but not uncomfortable, and roaring “low end” and I say that because while bass is not well defined, it certainly is present in the lower frequencies here. This tape will grow on you, and I promise once you start, and get past the first song (where the live mix is getting dialed in), you’ll find yourself more and more sucked in to it. Ultrasonic Studios 1969 Pro Studio 9.4 - Excellent stuff, I’d never heard this one before and I was pleasantly surprised to finally hear such pristine unofficial tracks by this great band. Tucson 1972 Audience 8.7 - A rambly, jambly sounding tape that allows you to hear every instrument with emphasis on drums, vocals and keyboards believe it or not…in such a way that sucks you right into it almost as if it were at a revival meeting. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of overload here (understandable) but I gotta tell you, this is a very, very exciting recording. Memphis 1972 Soundboard 9.7 - Scintillating stuff! Razor sharp guitar, pounding drums, and beautiful bass all interwoven and mixed for maximum clarity and separation of instruments. Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Stoke 1974 Audience 8.4 - A loud tape with a touch of stadium boom, but not anything that approaches irritation. It sounds like it’s in stereo, I hear guitar in one channel and bass in the other which is kinda cool. The instruments are all clearly discernible here making for a tape that sits on the upper side of very good. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.7 - A tape that has a good, snappy live sound and a pretty good mix for the ears. The music is delivered to you through a tight mid-range and a snare drum that hovers over everything making it instantly delightful. I rather do like this one! Orange, France 1975 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, one that really has good separation of instruments, and very decent dynamics. When the guitar solos, the sound seems to glide above you, so that kind of effect and atmosphere puts this show into a category I call “Repeat Listening” because you will go to it again. Amsterdam 1976 Audience 8.8 - Brassy, but enough mid and bottom to smooth that out nicely. A touch of cymbal sizzle but again there’s enough of all other frequencies here that not any one stands out in an annoying fashion. This is a well-balanced tape with some real life in it. NY 1978 SDBRD 9.3 - Really nice sounding, warm, well mixed. A couple of songs fade in, and a couple fade out, so that is unusual in my opinion for a board tape but it’s most of the songs, it isn’t drastic…and all the songs are instrumental anyway. A great one for the collector! Nuremberg 1980 SDBRD 9.5 - Another really good tape and excellent show, with minor complaint being a couple of fade ins and a couple of fade outs which only really may have an effect on those people who are intimately familiar with the band’s material. Disc 1 Soundboard 8.8 - This sounds like it could be from a television special as it has that telltale compression, and to my ears it sounds dated but in a cool way. A little narrow but clear and retains a sharpness, so you get every nuance of guitar but at the expense of any real bottom end – still is very good for the early vintage. Disc 2 Soundboard 9.6 except last two songs Audience 9.2 - This disc showcases some of the very best stuff I’ve heard, really a joy and fine quality too. Disc 3 SDBRD 9.7 - I hate to say it, but this is almost too good. At times though, guitar is mixed a little low, but it seems it’s only when he is on a certain setting on his guitar for whatever reason. Mostly it’s mixed real well. The audio fidelity is crystal clear, I think it needs more atmosphere…although to be fair Roy’s guitar creates that in spades. London 1978 Audience 8.5 - This is a show that has seen limited release as a bootleg CD but I have to assume one that only hardcore fans ever purchased. Now, many years later and thanks to the revolution in collecting shows, many of these sub-par recordings have re-emerged with the layers of muck and grime removed, and previously unheard frequencies and sounds uncovered. This is one such tape, and might I say it is really not that bad! I specifically highlight this tour because of the amazing set lists, so when “new” tapes surface, I think it is just great for the collectors as they rediscover this excellent period of Rush. Note: The filler on disc 2 is St. Paul 1978 which is only a fragment of the show as that is all that exists. Milwaukee 1978 Audience 8.3 - Another rare recording that would not have been given a second thought, due to the extremely poor dynamics and recording quality, has surfaced. This tape source has been thoroughly re-mastered and revealed itself to be listenable. Careful re-mastering is taking otherwise dismal recordings and making them to where you really have to stop and give pause, because it is yet further proof that we are living during an amazing time for collectors. The set lists during this time period are simply awesome, and the band is just firing on all cylinders, as they also were carrying over into 1979.
