Audience 8.8 - This came from a collection of tapes that were recorded by a couple who had the permission of the venue, so you would expect them to be done with more precision and care….but the story goes that they never listened to the finished results and therefore were unaware of the flaws in all of their efforts, mainly being signal overload. Now, this is where modern technology comes in to the equation – because after all these years we are able to notch out the offending frequencies and now the tapes sound VERY good! Listen to the difference, go back and find a pre-mastered version of this show and then listen to this one. It’s amazing, really amazing what a well trained ear can do for some of these old artifacts. This show also happens to be an inspired performance too, so win/win. Aud 9.1 - Legendary is all I can say. A beautiful recording that captures the vibe of the day, and every note of the gig as the sound wafted gently through the air into the superior quality tape deck that was used for this capture. Get it! NOTE: We now have the complete tape (second source) with the missing 30+ minutes. The sound quality drops considerably but it is still not bad. Disc two features the rest of the show. CD1 Audience 9.1 - A great capture of the evening’s festivities. Clear, close, well balanced. Bravo! CD2 Audience 8.7 - A big bold sound, and from the master tape, but where disc 1 has well defined instrument separation, this one is a more melded together sound with emphasis on bottom end. You still have an enjoyable experience, but it’s more about the rock and roll power rather than finesse with this tape. Soundboard 8.6 - This is a tape of contraries – on the one hand it is very forceful, with a wall of intense guitar/vocal energy with a driving bass pushing the sound through your brain – but it comes at a cost…which is dynamic range. The music is all there, you will even hear piano in the mix, and it’s just kind of lacking overall clarity and dynamics. All that being taken into consideration, what you have here is still a very good piece of history, a fun listen and one that does slightly improve (after the beginning where the sound is still finding its level/mix. A soundboard is a recording, and to be honest it doesn’t actually “capture” the event, it is what you would have heard if you were running the live sound for the band. Make sense? The only audience recording on this set actually is not that bad, but compared to immaculate soundboard tapes, your ears will need to adjust but you will notice that it is a very good capture with some occasional irregularities with the sound mix where the music gets “further” away (not literally, just something to do with the recording), but overall I think it is ok and worthwhile to enjoy. Vocals are sometimes in the background here, not that it matters because the all important guitar work is so present you will be more focused on it instead. It is a pretty good performance, it was a good night. I can’t complain about this one, I think it will be appreciated by people even those with only a passing interest in Clapton. Audience 8.4 - A very rare treat, to hear a complete “Preservation” era show. There’s really not a lot of 1973 recording around. This one sounds just fine, while not venturing too far in either direction dynamically, and some lack of clarity down low in the spectrum…but the upper mids and highs seem fine. It’s a good recording that could use your own EQ flavoring to round it into shape. I am happy to have this as I have not heard many, if any, ’73 tapes as good as this. Audience 8.6 - A kind of bumpy ride at times, being immersed in the middle of a rowdy audience, but the music comes through surprisingly well for such a massive cataclysm it must have been! It’s kind of fun, it’s a time capsule, and as long as I can hear the music in a clear way, even if it is not “hi-fi”, it’s fine by me. Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig. I admit I wasn’t too knowledgeable of his stuff, I knew his name (he is from Houston, he was just one of our locals) and had numerous chances to see him live…but sadly never did. I should have. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs. FM Broadcast 9.1 (Seattle) and Audience 8.3 (Fresno) - Two very cool shows with the first one taking the cake for fidelity but the second one is a stomper. It is pretty clear with guitar being very good and loud (screaming in fact!) but not at the expense of everything else. It’s lacking maybe some lower end definition and separation of instruments during their jamming parts (might lose some of the drums in there, and keyboards are absent sometimes) but these are not going to bother you when you start listening to this gig because it’s a thriller. Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so!
