Berlin 1971 - Audience 7.6 and Pro 8.7 - Material originates from an average audience tape but two songs come from a pro TV recording (most likely). Stockholm 1970 - Soundboard 8.9 - Material is most definitely from a TV source (thus explains the short interview). The second disc contains BBC tracks from 1970 and some rare color 16MM pro shot film from Berlin 1971. The disc is formatted as a data disc so you can only play it on a computer, opening the audio files and video file with the player of your choice. Audience 8.6 - Small club vibe and really good sound with an emphasis on percussion clarity and presence. Recording leans to the mid and upper end but it’s not too brittle there, so it’s very comfortable but can use some added low end anyway. Aside from that, this is quite good. Led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass. The Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their debut album was in 1980. But in 1982, the band were reduced to a four-piece. The Furs did find success in the US with their next release, 1981's Talk Talk Talk, which included the original version of "Pretty in Pink", which was later re-recorded for the 1986 movie soundtrack "Pretty in Pink". This movie would help launch Molly Ringwald's acting career.

Soundboard 9.6 - A New Years Eve gig in New Orleans, I mean, can you imagine the partying that went down? Had to be legendary, and here’s a captured moment from that night with an artist who’s bringing it to the crowd, with a crack band (listen to the guitar leads!). Audience 7.2 - I would have preferred the guitar higher in the mix, so what happens is before the band starts playing, the audio sounds perfect, then when they start, the levels change and sound, for whatever reason, sounds weak, or it is the mix. It’s weird, because the drums sound fine, the bass is present, and then vocals but where is the keyboard and guitar? They are there, you can hear them, but they are too far back.
-
Audience 8.2 - A recent re-mastering has helped this old tape IMMENSELY. I mean, it took it from a 7.3 to an 8.2 which is significant. For that reason alone, people who have had this one should now upgrade. -
Audience 8.8 - The Zurich aftershow is decent enough for what had to be a packed club, so yeah it’s somewhat claustrophobic as you feel like you are squeezed between people and you are trying to bootleg the damn show ha ha! It’s good, it’s not great. The rest of the material is excellent quality from various source but all great. PRINCE The War Disc 1 Newpower Soul Tour Aftershow Kaufleuten, Zurich 24th August 1998 1. Audience 9.4 - If the house itself sounds great, and your taping with high quality equipment (most likely a small digital unit with a good, dynamic mic and level control), then your result will be something like this. A lot of detail comes through, as does, from time to time, a rowdy audience – that adds to the atmosphere and thankfully never wrecks the audio recording. Audience 9.3 - A great, clean, and atmospheric recording that you cannot help but love. It’s one of those shows that you can’t get away from, the band is so on fire…even Prince has to comment about how tight his band is! They are superb and the level of funkiness is off the charts. Soundboard 9.6 - This guy literally can play Happy Birthday and make it sound sexy and groovy (proof is available). Too bad I was so hard-headed and never went and saw him live. I could have on many occasions, but I just never saw myself as one of the “beautiful people” I guess. What a shame I would have loved it. (Soundchecks, Rehearsals and Jams)

Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. Soundboard 9.6 - Excellent in every respect, including the fact that there’s some audience bleeding into stage mics which in my opinion immensely help soundboard recordings from becoming too sterile. No chance of that happening here, so what you get is simply wonderful including excellent performances by everyone. Audience 9.5 - A lot of audience periphery (shouting and bustling) but nonetheless it’s a crystal clean and very dynamic recording. The energy is palpable and comes right out pretty much all the way through as the audience is very responsive and Prince most definitely fed off it. Guitar tone is perfection – vocals very nicely placed in the mix as is everything really. Great, great stuff!
Audience 9.3 - The ’92 Aftershow is equally excellent with just slight differences in tone and distance to come second place to the Bataclan show.
Pro 9.3 – The radio broadcasts here are great and as you would expect, since they are professionally recorded, but honestly I still prefer the Bataclan audience tape which says an awful lot about what a good job taper did on that.
Audience 8.8 - The final disc contains London ’99 audience tape which is the weakest of this set but still decent enough to enjoy. Sounds somewhat distant (not in the stadium sense but small venue distant).

Soundboard 9.7 - As crystal clear as it could possibly get. Why it doesn’t get a 10 rating? Because in my opinion a perfect recording is not just crystal clear but has numerous other elements that separate it from just another clear board tape. Not to denigrate this at all, because it is great – but a crystal clear near perfect board tape is just that, a near perfect board tape that does not reflect ambience, atmosphere, vibe (although not always), and other elements of a live concert. Still, you will love this anyway it’s Prince after all and these kind of fly on the wall type recordings are super cool. The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA. 11-22-84 Disc 1 1. Bass Try Out #1 2. Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. A party-like atmosphere permeates and the band is very good all throughout this 3 disc set. Great performances, each and every band member shines. This style of funk stops and turns on a dime, with breakdowns and turnarounds, it’s exhilarating! Prince literally just about at his peak simply Wonderful! Audience 9.6 - Superb clarity and separation of instruments while retaining a cool, honest live vibe which is what recording from an audience can produce so long as the gear being used is high quality and taper knows how to use it. Audience 9.4 - I think these recordings accurately translate the exact feel and sound in the venue, which is a great thing because this is the kind of emotional performance that only Prince could elicit...what I mean is, it's just him playing the piano and singing and yet it is mesmerizing, electrifying, and sometimes melancholy in a good way.

Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Audience 8.7 - Do not be dissuaded by the rating, yes there are innumerable pristine board tapes out there to enjoy but let me tell you this show is a MONSTER! I was exhausted by the end, and what an ending stretch it is. The audio is very decent with a wide stereo field which helps it. When I first heard this tape I knew it needed to be refreshed because the performance was extraordinary and in fact it was a big event at the time. I remember hearing about it and I live in Texas! So, with that in mind I worked on it and the result is very convincing and gives life to the tape. It’s not going to be the best sounding show you’ve ever heard but it will be one of the best performances you’ve ever heard. I think this is worth it. Prince Madison Square Garden New York City, NY. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. It’s an uh-oh I ain’t gonna lie. Prince Gotta Lotta Butter To Go Butter Restaurant New York City, NY. 06-17-2006 Disc 1 1. It Ain't Over - Peach 2. Te Amo Corazon 3.
