Soundboard 9.0 -A somewhat confusing mix, almost as if a ghost is present in the board! Well what it actually is might not be that spooky at all, just the effects loop they use for what seems to be the kick drum, or drums in general. It's their signature, a background "noise" the resembles phasing, and gives the band a unique sound. Does it work for a soundboard tape is the question - and I think it can be slightly distracting but it's not used continuously. Other than that I think this is quite OK. This is just one of those bands that you need the tone to go with the whole presentation - classy songwriting, unique vocals, superior musicianship. all said this is a band that has great tone. Audience 9.3 - For me, because this is a recording from 2023, I place high expectations on it. There is no excuse because you have the best P.A.’s, the best digital recorders, and great microphones. So I want something that gives me a sense of being there and this tape does that. I like the “in the pit” feel of this tape, and I really like the immersive audio. Great! Soundboard 9.4 - Anytime you can find a soundboard of this band you really ought to grab it. I think it allows the listener to get all the nuance, the sound effects so-to-speak that make Ghost a little bit better than the competition. Plus the songs are interesting, and the voice is perfectly matched to the style.

Audience 9.4 - Superior to a board tape in my opinion because it is recorded in the way that your ears would have picked up the sound in the venue, with the perfectly balanced stereo mixing and balancing of instruments to each side of the stage. Wonderful! -
Soundboard 8.8 - Good punchy sound if not a little heavy on bass but it’s fine ‘cause that bass is funky and snappin’ coolness bruh. -
Audience 8.7 - It’s a small to mid-size venue and a loud all-girl metal band so the idea here is to just have some fun. If you are wanting pristine clarity and dynamics, you have come to the wrong place. If you want polished, precision metal, um, yeah, whatever pal. If you wanna rock with some veteran metal chicks and get sloppy drunk, well, step right up! -
FM Broadcast 9.0 and Audience 8.8 - Both recordings capture the band well enough to appreciate that they were at least attempting to craft their own sound and style. Audience 8.1 - Tape is not clear but also not muddy, it’s just typical of early 70’s gear not being able to handle freakishly loud rock bands. This recording highlights drums, guitars, and bass and vocals are in the background. That being said, the drums and guitars are pretty clear, and there’s plenty of the dueling guitar pyrotechnics on display. I don’t complain to have this show to hear, it’s clearly worth it to the collectors out there. Audience 9.2 - Even with the well known acoustics of Carnegie Hall being not ideal for taping (but very good for “live” concert hall sound), this taper did an admiral job. The sound is crisp, vibrant, and has great atmospherics. Obviously without that over-amped rock star PA insanity you get with most concert hall audience tapes of that time, this is more acoustic, generally speaking and therefore the sound does not get crowded or distorted. Soundboard 9.5 - A great recording, with an occasional stumble caused by the soundman trying to balance things and tweaking a mic too much getting feedback but thankfully only here and there. Gordon gets a little annoyed at it too, but he’s a real pro and it shows. I get the feeling that although some of his music may have been familiar to some in the audience, he probably did not relate so much to the hippy generation. Audience 7.8 - Very worthwhile listen, all the energy and excitement is here in spades, and a very decent recording of what had to be insanely loud! One of the better early audience recordings out there for sure. -
Audience 7.7 - You can count on one hand the number of GFR live recordings from the early 70’s, so whenever one pops up, it is worth investigating further. This one is absolutely worthwhile, with sound quality that places it into the top 5. All instruments hear, and clearly with drums being the weakest link. -
Audience 7.1 - Not the greatest fidelity but once you get through the first sound and your ears adjust you will get sucked into this marathon of a show. Only one song clocked in at under 6 minutes. One thing that I was struck by here, was the sheer massiveness of the bass, when he kicks in the fuzz overdrive it is massive and really drives this band’s music. A worthwhile listen considering the miniscule amount of GFR recordings out there, especially from this vintage. -
Grand Funk Railroad Hawaii 1971 - Soundboard 9.1 A scarcity of prime era recordings mandate that anyone remotely interested in this band pursue any and all recordings that are A. Soundboard and/or B. decent audience for the simple reason that this band kicked ass. This is a true rarity – a soundboard and, yes, it kicks major ass. Grand Funk Railroad Boston 1971 Audience 8.7 - A very good tape surfaces and you can actually hear everything pretty clearly. This band played very loud (as did any self-respecting heavy rock band of the early 70’s) and consequently unless you smuggled in superior quality machinery you weren’t likely to be able to capture this sound with any clarity. This taper had better than average gear it seems, and even though it’s still somewhat distant from the stage, it is a tape that allows the listener to experience an entire show without struggling too hard to make out what is going on. Audience 8.8 - Anytime you get a halfway decent sounding GFR show you grab it, because let's face it these guys were just balls to the wall loud and normal taping gear could not handle it. But, every once in a while you find something...and again it serves to remind just how badass this band was. This is a really good recording considering how mind-numbingly loud it had to be there. It is not clear as a bell, but it's got some great qualities and is clear enough to hear each band member well...and the POWER geez, oh man it's insane here. Audience 7.4 - Supremely loud! Only by turning down the dial on the very crisp highs (as in cymbal crashes) will you get something discernible in this noisy wall of sonic mayhem. However, it is clear enough to enjoy nonetheless. -

Soundboard 9.2 - This is the complete recording featuring both sets (previously available as an edited down version) and is notable for the amazing version of Dark Star, although the gig is expertly performed, that track really stands out. The sound is clean (almost too clean) and does have a “rounded” sound, there’s no jangly edges here so crank it up for a better experience. Audience 9.7 - Spectacular, crystal clear and lush sound makes you sink deeply into this one. For some, the Grateful Dead are not easily understood, but this show and this recording can easily be understood as beautiful music played with passion and talent galore. Now, to be honest, this set is missing an important segment, the "space/drums" part is conspicuously absent, but there is still plenty of lengthy workouts to keep you engaged with the psychedelic overtones of a Dead concert as well as the more bluegrass and bluesy numbers. Audience 8.8 - Truly a marvel, you get three blockbuster acts performing outdoors at a large German Rock Festival in 1974 and you are sitting there listening to something that was probably forgotten within days by everyone as they smoke, drank, and partied until the cows came home in preparation for the next festival that came to town. What I am really saying is that while the band members and audiences probably cannot recall what they did on September 27th, 1974, we can now relive that very day in the lives of all of those people because taper managed to capture everything while sitting in a decent spot and running decent gear. Why he/she did this I do not know but I certainly appreciate their efforts not taking it for granted one bit. The music here sounds good to my ears, very comfortable even if not very distinct in the mid band (where guitars reside) but more than made up for with a beautiful round bass sound and good vocals and highs. Very nice! Audience 8.8 - Very bright recording, the bottom end is there and it has good detail but could be a little deeper. That being said, if you want to hear the combination of solid, hard rock guitar paired with Greg Lake’s proggy and sometimes jazzy keyboards well, this is about as good as that combination can ever sound. It works actually, quite well. The good thing about this recording being on the bright side is that the guitars and keys are especially clear. Audience 7.4 - For the first half of the show containing the Edgar Winter and Leon Russell sets, and 8.2 for the duration, which is cool because now you have a complete picture of the entire evening, start to finish, which you rarely find. As the tape progresses, rather than diminish, it brightens and opens up for pretty much the entire Gregg Allman set. Not that it is horrible, just that it occupies a mid range bandwidth without straying into too many dynamics. Tape does not distort, and does not peak, so what you get is a consistent capture that gets progressively better as the evening wears on. This tape has never been heard prior to the release of this set.
