Roslyn 1976 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Powerful! If you are not familiar with Tommy Bolin and want to learn more, start here! If you are already on the Tommy train – keep riding! This is unbelievably good! Detroit 1976 Audience 8.8 - This is a very good sounding tape in many regards although it is recorded in a large, cavernous arena and therefore you won’t get some of the detail a more intimate venue would give you. The vocals are somewhat drowned out by a guitar sound that is quite huge, with the bass complementing that hugeness to the degree that this show is a guitar/bass tour de force. Thankfully Tommy is the shining star in this recording…and shine he did. Soundboard 9.9 - This nearly brought me to tears. I always knew this band could reach the highest level of quality, in performance, in tone, in showmanship, and here it is. Yeah, sure, I know what you are thinking: “it’s mid 80’s Aerosmith, it’s the doldrums of rock, it’s a washed up bunch of druggies” but I have to tell you that if this marks a “comeback” then it’s the most amazing comeback I have ever heard. I’ve heard tons of live Aerosmith and I take this show over ALL of them. Pro 9.9 - this is unbelievably solid. Everything is in the pocket, which is awfully hard to do with a metal band. Every instrument, and the crowd mixed in to provide atmosphere. This had to be a broadcast, but it’s not from a broadcast it has to be a pre-broadcast master. I mean, it’s almost perfect. Audience 8.6 - A new tape to circulation and a most welcomed one. It’s certainly quite different and for Zep collectors will be analyzed incessantly and be shown as a “keeper” for many reasons. Sound quality is a little hissy but surprisingly clear and without mud. Dynamically it’s not going to shatter any records but let me tell you for what this is, it offers a fascinating window into a hard-working touring band making yet another tour stop in some out of the way, random Scandinavian town nobody has ever heard of. Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks. In excellent, mind-bending sonic POWER – the kick drum literally will kick your skull in – the crowd extending their pleasure with every note. For those only familiar with their two radio staples, you will most certainly want to re-examine this band’s output after hearing this. I know I did! This is way above average! Now, it is not perfect, I would have liked more guitar in the house mix, but still you can’t deny the power and excitement of this recording. Audience 8.4 - This is a hard one to set aside, it’s an uncommon tape that sounds very good. It’s bright, and atmospheric (not echoey!) without any big hall boominess. The real selling point here is that both Ozzy and Randy are the focus in this live mix. I say go ahead and grab it if you want to hear the very early Blizzard Of Ozz on tour ‘cause this is a great find. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. Audience 8.6 - Pretty solid actually, you get pretty good instrument separation even though the rhythm guitar and bass combination is REALLY powerful on this tape, just thankfully not enough to bury the lead work which rings out over the top of it all.
