ELTON JOHN – The Seattle Tapes 1972-1975 (Deluxe Metal Canister 10 CD)

Original price was: $80.00.Current price is: $70.00.
The set features outstanding quality audience recordings made between 1972 and 1975 at the Seattle Coliseum. The quality encompasses not just the audio fidelity but the completeness and smoothness. All in all this is surely one of the best collections of live Elton John I've ever heard.  The price has risen slightly to accommodate the upgrades that have been applied to not only this but the entire line of canisters. I think you will totally be blown away when you see the difference, and the previous ones were pretty impressive so this is going to really be something special. • Audience 9.2 - This recording is very clean and very bright, it does not favor the bass but what you’ll find is that the guitar sounds like it’s right next to you (which for the taper maybe it was). That is what is going to bring you into this show anyway – it’s all here, it’s a great recording with excellent airspace (atmosphere) allowing the sounds to breath.

  • Audience 8.8 - Taper seems to have a pretty decent set up, because this recording sounds very lively, bright, and there are enough dynamics here to satisfy. What is apparent though is that the poor taper seems to be having to deal with the Japanese phenomena of clapping during songs (not all of them, but yeah the crowd is super enthusiastic). In this sense, because it’s a good recording, I went along with the energy and excitement, settled in, and had a real good time. You will too! • Audience 9.7 - Here’s one of those timeless artists who always sounds relevant no matter the time period. A 1985 concert is a 1975 concert is a 2005 concert – consistently excellent and never selling out integrity for anything approaching chart success. This recording puts you so close, so intimate it’s really like being there in the front row. Drums are in your living room, the piano is next to you, and Pat is your best friend. Wonderful! • Audience 9.1 - A strong, very clear tape which has a deep bottom end, you can feel the kick and the bass!  The band sound close, there’s no indication they are playing a large venue, it’s almost kind of an intimate sound. • Audience 9.4 - This is a revelation for me. I was not too familiar with the band and always assumed they were just another “Neo Prog” band from the 80’s. Boy am I wrong! This is KILLER! The audio quality is thankfully excellent and bright so as to capture the insane complexity and brilliance of this band. Sure, there’s going to be obvious attempts to compare them to other bands but to my ears they had something unique going, while also tipping the cap to bands like Marillion, Genesis, and UK. The amount of ideas going on in each song is beyond belief. • Audience 8.7 - I want to rate this higher because of what it represents and what it will do for you, the listener. I want to rate it based on more than just audio fidelity, which in this case is very good for the time, and technically you get everything you need here – excellent separation of instruments, good clarity, good atmosphere…but dynamically it sits in a middle range place and doesn’t offer deep, rich lows or crisp highs and we are spoiled nowadays so we might complain about that but NOT ME! This is KILLER! When was the last time a Queen live recording caused the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up? I can’t adequately express the perfection this performance is, spine-tingling, electric, orgasmic, all of this and more. If listening to this show doesn’t move you, you are dead inside. • SDBRD 9.4 /Audience 8.1/Audience 8.8/Audience 8.3 - A comprehensive collection but not everything is represented here, but I would say the more complete recordings are…and so, well, what you get is a pretty mixed bag. The good stuff is very good, and the not so good stuff is…not so good. What does it mean? Should I get this 4 disc set?  Yes you should if you care anything at all about this seminal band. There just isn’t a whole lot of live “bootleg” recordings because they predate the era of the taper – not to say there aren’t tapes from 1967-1968 because there are, but not nearly as plentiful or as good as tapes that were made subsequently. That being said, I still found myself listening to everything in this set because you can’t argue the fact that hearing Jeff Beck or Jimmy Page before they were rock gods is immensely interesting. • Pro Recording 9.3 - The reason this is not listed as a soundboard (and it very well may be) is because they way it was recorded sounds like they may have hung microphones rather than direct through board. In this case I find the recording to be more preferable to the “dry” board mix, here you get some atmosphere and it helps immensely!
