Audience 8.7 - I can imagine the difficulty in trying to capture something like this with all of the challenges not least of which is sheer volume and venues not ideal for the kind of acoustics metal presents. Does that mean this recording is bad? No, it's obviously done on gear that can handle the job, but to my ears it's something that you will need at least two songs to adjust, but once you do, it becomes the kind of tape that finds you sort of hanging on to see what happens next. It just feels like it will keep improving and maybe it does, or maybe you just find that you kind of dig it. MEGADETH TOKYO 1988 1ST NIGHT Live at Nakano Sunplaza Tokyo, Japan 12th July 1988 01. Audience 8.6 - Starts off a bit dodgy but gets better. Vocals are up front in the mix but still "round" and by that I mean not clearly defined to where you can make out the words. Drums are probably the clearest instrument in this recording and they propel the music forward with gusto. Guitars are raucous and as dirty as you want them, and the overall recording is a bit dirty too coming from the crowd where you get a great sense of being there with them. This is a recording that is worth sticking with because by the third or fourth song in you can really start to appreciate it because it does seem as though everything gets just a little bit clearer and more distinct (you can really tell during Over The Top). It's 2004 and Ozzfest has reached New Jersey. Black Sabbath are headlining, but rumors about Ozzy's health are circulating backstage and only one man can save the day: The Metal God, no other then Rob Halford! This the capture of that moment! Fantastic show, great recording! Limited to 200 copies!!!!!! -
Audience 8.8 - A recording where the audience does get some attention but not in an obnoxious way, just in an enthusiastic way which sometimes adds to the excitement...but for some it might be a distraction. I didn't mind it, there really wasn't a particular audience member who yelled stupidly right into the mic. Thankfully the band is pretty reasonably clear, most of the time. I think there is room in your collection for this one, which won't be the best Animals show, but it certainly won't be the worst. Audience 8.6 - The first thing you want to do when you begin to play this is skip the first song. The taper is bustling around trying to get into his seat, the tape deck microphone is buried deep within his clothing and the sound mix on stage is still being dialed in...all told this track is unlistenable. What happens next is miraculous - the sun begins to shine in the darkness! We now have a recording to enjoy, and it is enjoyable. It's not Randy, but look, what was asked of Bernie was impossible and he did a remarkable job filling in while they searched for a permanent replacement. I admire Bernie Torme and do not ignore the live recordings of him with Ozzy (not many are very good unfortunately). This is one of the better sounding tapes out there from this period. Everything in this canister sounds very good to great (sdbrd) but I would say disc 1 (the early 1980 show) is the worst sounding, but consequently one of extreme importance. These early Blizzard gigs are the REAL band, and I mean they were a band and not a concoction and not that I have anything against the second iteration, I think this first line-up was badass. This entire set is a joy to listen to, as I stated most of it is very good to excellent quality and going through these important years is a hell of a lot of fun and quite fitting now that Ozzy has performed his final show. The package and art is simply stunning, and befitting of an "unauthorized" tribute to him and his career during the 80's. Leicester Audience 9.2 - Very clear, close, with very detailed highs and a solid, driving low end to round out the sound. Rob Halford sounds like he's in your living room. Super lively! Sheffield Audience 9.1 - This one is solid, the guitar and vocals are the stars of the show, but drums sit very nicely here and the bass is pumping away without being boomy at all. This is a really nice tape!

Audience 9.0 - A SOLID, and I mean very good tape. The high end rings out nicely, drums have a nice real sound to them, and all instruments are heard clearly. The venue has good acoustics, so that helps a lot, it really allows for the immersive experience without being painful on the ear drums. This is one to get. Audience 9.1 - Lovely, well done recording that does have one or two "wobbles" where the tape might have stretched or something (only caught it once) but a minor deal really. It's a warm sound, and has a lot of headroom which is essential and a big benefit if you want to add your own EQ settings. Lots to enjoy here, I recommend this wholeheartedly. All Soundboard 9.2 to 9.6 - This is a great collection for the Santana enthusiast, but also for the casual fan. The sound is consistently great across all discs, with only minor tonality differences (such as a slightly brighter tone on the New Orleans portion of disc 2). There is a enough track difference to keep things from being overly repetitious.

Audience 8.8 - Very clear, and pretty bright, and that means the tape sacrifices the bottom end in favor of getting the clarity and separation of instruments - that might be considered the trade-off here. I would prefer more bass, but this is something one can add themselves, that is why I highly rate this recording. I think because it is so clear you can really season it to taste more so than if you had a cluttered, or muddy recording. Black Sabbath The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 1981-12-04 Disc 1 101. E5150 102. Hoffman Estates - Audience 8.7 - Residing mainly in the mid and upper mid range this recording does not showcase any real definition in the highs, and the metal loudness defined as a solid guitar/bass attack for the low end. What you end up with here with these two recordings is something of historical value but nothing you would use to impress your buddies with. Are they essential for the collection? Yes, both of these shows are very significant in value and because they are not horrible recordings I can recommend them.
Chicago - Audience 8.8 - This recording has a softer mid-range making it a little more comfortable, but still does not have a clarity and distinction to it, but it is also not muddy, it's just a capture that was made with equipment that had only the capability to document a live event, it wasn't made to do a professional live recording so keep that in mind - pretty decent but not great. I will say this, and I sincerely believe this - I think this recording is exactly what your ears would have been hearing at this show. That is why I think these recordings are important, even if they lack soundboard clarity and are not A+ audience tapes. There's plenty to enjoy here with both of these shows.

Audience 8.7 - A new re-mastering has taken what was once a very muddy recording and breathed significant new life into it. I mean, if ever there was a time to be collecting it is right now. So while it still might be considered as an average audience recording, the fact is that there is much more in this tape than what was once believed and which is why it flew under the Sabbath collector radar. But it's actually pretty good, I can only be a little critical if I analyze what is happening at the lower end here, not much definition and guitar blends into the bass somewhat and provide a volume backdrop that is "dark" and foreboding but not a mess either. I think people should give this re-mastered version a chance, I did and I am very glad I did. Black Sabbath 1971-01-18 City Hall Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK 01. Paranoid 02. N.I.B. 03. War Pigs 04. Soundboard 8.9 - Man, this is just amazing. It sounds a little dated, maybe a little faded, but definitely NOT jaded! The live sound mix isn't perfect here, I think guitars should be louder (but at least in this board I can hear every note of the bass) but in defense of the guitars I can hear both of them somewhat distinctly. Vocals do suffer, they are pushed well back of the mix, at times they get closer to the right spot, but it's all good they are there but just not at the center of the mix. FM Broadcast 8.9 - Good because it's a broadcast, but there is some compression so you do not get the crisp, soaring highs and separation of instruments is not perfect. It's a somewhat "rough" professional recording and I am not talking about just age or generation of tape either - some of this is probably in the actual recording and/or live sound mix. That being said - it's a really good tape nonetheless and worthy of your collection. Blue Oyster Cult Centrum Worcester, MA. September 24, 1982 01. Pre-show interview 02. Audience 8.4 - A distant recording without a lot of dynamics but the audio is clear enough especially vocals and guitar. Low end is not in abundance but the bass notes are audible and distinct which helps this tape become something collectors should want, it is, after all, a 1975 concert and fills that part of the collection. The take-away? A guitar-centric tape, a great show, worthy of the collection but not winning any awards for scintillating dynamics. Soundboard 8.8 - Not the best mix, you won't get everything in a vibrant, democratically mixed way but even so it's going to deliver in other ways for you. The vocals are living room clear, organ and drums occupy the next level of bandwidth, and then comes bass...leaving guitars in the background until they are brought forward during solos or during some of the songs where guitar is a key component. It's spotty there, but seems to come and go in the mix (when it comes it is fine, but then it oddly disappears). Audience 8.9 - Quite an interesting tape, the proximity to the stage makes the energy palpable - good mix of both guitars and the amazing tone they had at this time. I am happy to say that this is well balanced, with a decent sonic quality that makes it more interesting to the ears than a board tape. Audience 8.8 - Anytime you get a halfway decent sounding GFR show you grab it, because let's face it these guys were just balls to the wall loud and normal taping gear could not handle it. But, every once in a while you find something...and again it serves to remind just how badass this band was. This is a really good recording considering how mind-numbingly loud it had to be there. It is not clear as a bell, but it's got some great qualities and is clear enough to hear each band member well...and the POWER geez, oh man it's insane here. Brand New - Live Marquee Club November 29th, 1985 and demos early '85 and late '86. Butler formed a short-lived group in 1984 after leaving Black Sabbath for the first time. Butler wrote some songs intended for the project, but the group did not record or release any material. This mid-80s project featured a fascinating hodgepodge of players as the bass legend was joined by Sabbath's touring keyboardist Jezz Woodroffe and Persian Risk's vocalist Carl Sentence among others. The band was never able to release anything beyond a couple of demos that remain a fascinating relic. -
Brand New - Radio Broadcasts - USA leg of Savatage tour like the Vol I, here you can listen to 17 tracks recorded on The Palace, Hollywood/Los Angeles and The Venue in Dallas, Texas. The problem here is to decide what’s the best leg of the tour! Both CDs sound amazing and the band delivers a great performance wherever they play. -
Brand New - Live and Studio - During 1979 the band recorded 11 tracks (studio demos), made now available on this CD, wiling to secure a record deal with some American Record Label. Randy Rhoads later left Quiet Riot after accepting an offer to form a new band with ex-Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. Along with this demo this CD also contains various rare tracks recorded from 1975 to 1979. Songs that remained unreleased. -
Audience 8.7 - A recording that won't set the night on fire but will provide enough warmth and light to keep you in front of it. I only noticed some issues with how the cymbals sounded, to me it almost sounded like tape hiss - I had to really concentrate to tell what it was at first, but, it does seem to be Keith banging away incessantly as he is known to do. Towards the end of the tape, the cymbal anomaly seems to get worse. It is still a decent old tape. Boston 1973 - Soundboard 9.7 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, as you can expect with a jazz rock combo the sound has to be extraordinary due to the nature of the musicianship and sound they each produce - in other words it is easier to manage the sound when it isn't over distorted and ear-splittingly loud. This is, as a result, a lovely sounding tape (during the quiet sections there is some minor tape noise in the background but it disappears as soon as the music starts). New York 1974 - Audience 9.0 - I had a hard time figuring out whether this was an aud or a soundboard because of the proximity of the vocals. I determined it had to be a semi-professional audience recording because of the crowd responses being pretty well picked up in the tape after songs...if it was a board tape that would not be as audible (if at all). But it could still easily pass as a board tape if you didn't take that into account - so is it a board tape? It is very good for this venue, Carnegie Hall acoustics did not lend themselves well to loud rock music, if this is indeed an audience tape they did a fantastic job! Soundboard 9.7 - Pro recording in a live in-studio setting so it better be as good as it gets, and this is. Aside from minor tape hiss (only noticeable during the lulls), this is near perfection. Audience 9.0 - This recording has a real vintage feel to it, like a fine antique it is a little brassy but nice and clear with enough dynamic to get a feel for the mood and the times. Audience 8.6 - A middle of the road tape that starts off rough as taper situates himself (and a rather rude bump occurs in the middle of Welcome To The Jungle) but do smooth out a few minutes in and gradually sounds somewhat better. A large venue sound complete with that telltale "verb" and slightly boomy, but one thing you get plenty of, and this is key, Slash. At the expense of Axl, you get a heaping dose of Slash and that is fine. Quieter numbers and interludes sound way much better than full tilt volume. I suggest exploring this one if you already collect the band's live shows and do not have this one yet - it's good, it's not great, but to the band's credit I have yet to hear them do a subpar performance and this show is pretty darn good. Soundboard 9.0 -A somewhat confusing mix, almost as if a ghost is present in the board! Well what it actually is might not be that spooky at all, just the effects loop they use for what seems to be the kick drum, or drums in general. It's their signature, a background "noise" the resembles phasing, and gives the band a unique sound. Does it work for a soundboard tape is the question - and I think it can be slightly distracting but it's not used continuously. Other than that I think this is quite OK. Audience 8.7 - No other recordings strikes me the same way this one does. The best way to describe it is...it makes you feel like these sounds have travelled through a worm hole to reach us, having been hurtling through the past, space, time, to get to your ears again now. You hear the atmosphere of ancient Rome, the Pantheon, the theatre, the crowds, the GUITAR...echoing, then landing like a punch in the face. But, there's problems sometimes when travelling through time and space, you don't always come out completely intact as this old tape clearly shows. Does that mean it's bad? Quite contrary! I was mesmerized and listened to the whole thing. It's not great, it's not bad, it's not going to win any contests but it is UNIQUE and a blast to hear. I'm in Rome in 1972 at a Who concert and my seats are on Pete's side of the stage and I am getting my wish to be smothered by the delicious sounds of a Gibson SG in the hands of a maniac genius at full volume. How can you not want to know about this? It is well worth having. Audience 9.5 - Astounding for a 1970 era audience tape, it's got amazing atmosphere and plenty of headroom. The balance here is really good with vocals where they should be, which is very up front, but drums sound fantastic here and the piano sounds perfectly mixed between the two.
