Studio Quality 9.5 - The average rating here in the mid 9.0’s because except for the occasional minor hiss, this material consists of professionally recorded, live in studio sessions. Good to have it all in a well constructed collection like this.

Audience 9.3 - Excellent, clean, and good concert hall vibe on this one. It’s Japan, and the crowd has a penchant to clap during some songs but the recording mitigates it to the point you barely even notice. My guess is that the mics were raised over the crowd in order to achieve that.

Audience 8.5 - This is one very loud recording, and while it does not distort, it’s in need of an EQ job to tamper down some of the mid and upper mid to high band just to give it more listenability. As it is, it sounds very much like an early Iron Maiden tape…it just has that quality to it. There are very few live tapes of this outfit, so I take this with a lot of curiosity to hear what these guys were about and can forgive the fact that, while this tape falls below my own threshold of what I can tolerate more than once, it does live up to satisfying my curiosity. I find the band full of promise and potential, and I want to hear more, better quality live tapes but will start with listening to their LP release which I recently obtained.

Audience 8.5 - I guess if you want to know what this band was about in their heyday, and if you didn’t mind the fact that one of the few tapes in existence sounded like what your parents thought of your heavy metal noise…this is for you. It’s punkish, it’s brash, it’s snotty, it’s ramshackle, it’s amateur, it’s possibly a glorious mess…and they do Vegetable Man so they get high marks for recognizing what is great and what should be covered (that’s because they don’t have enough profound original music to offer at this stage). So, yeah, I suppose this is worth getting in case you A. want to discover this band and B. want to hear what they were like at the beginning. OK, last thoughts – want to know what it sounds like when a freight train begins to crash? In slow motion? Very nearby? Side Note: I liked their song "Taste The Floor" as it reminded me of early Kinks. Plus I could decipher what they were doing...yeah, it was alright.

Audience 9.3 - A great, very lively and sharp recording. I love the mix here too, drums are prominent without being boomy, guitars are complimentary and tuneful. This is a really fun hour of listening pleasure and will get repeat plays in your player for sure. The inclusion of Prince on two songs is just the icing on the cake.

Audience 8.8 - A snapshot from the road during a period that for some reason is largely undocumented. The tape is consistent and good, most listeners will settle into it nicely, but those who prefer the pristine boards or Mike “The Mic” Millard quality tapes may be critical of this one. Personally I found this tape to deliver on the essentials, being that it is clear (a little bit overcrowded in the center channel a bit and maybe not the best instrument separation) and reasonably dynamic enough to hold your attention through the duration.

Audience 9.1 - What a find! This tape exudes raw power, and hearkens back to the original sound and style of the band much more so than what would be just a year and a half later. Does that mean it’s a raw blues rock show? No, but there is a lot of that here, and more than that it’s the TONE of the band. Gritty, mean, raw but tight…fierce! The quality of the tape is VERY good…well worth snagging!

Soundboard 8.8 - This is a soundboard that is not without flaws, not serious flaws, but indeed somewhat noticeable ones. So, it’s one of those mixes where guitar sounds at times amazing, up front, and gloriously loud…and at others it seems like it was ran through an on-board processor of some kind and ends up more compressed and lower in the mix. Rock The Nation is cut at the tail end of Ronnie’s solo, and the drum intro for I Got The Fire begins, so that was a little bit of a jarring edit that could have been smoother. Overall this is a tape, and show, that will sit nicely in the collection seeing as how there are so few Gamma sdbrds, or live tapes at all.

Audience 8.8 - A functional capture, not like maybe the typical Prince stealth recording with the crisp highs and deep lows, punchy middle...this one is the stepchild I suppose where it has everything one step below it's vaunted siblings. Does that mean it is bad? Not at all, it's a fine recording that presents a VERY top form and funky Prince in his element...it's very good but not greatness and I am thankful to have it nonetheless. Radio Broadcast 8.8 - One thing that I really appreciate about this recording is how you can hear a real separation between bass and guitars. This is not typical of a heavy metal concert recording unless recorded and mixed for a specific purpose, such as a broadcast. So, while the sound itself might tend to be on the "brassier" side - it's not a knock...it's a way of trying to describe how there's plenty of bass but not necessarily in the form of that typical metal low end boomy sludge sound. It's got definition and I like that.Savatage Harpo's Detroit, MI. June 14th, 19851. Introduction 2. City Beneath The Surface 3. Skull Session 4. Warriors 5. Midas Knight 6. Visions Of Hell 7. Audience 9.2 - Here is another great Millard tape that gives you a clear picture of an event, capturing it not just with good gear in good location but allowing the atmosphere of the occasion to shine through as well. The show here is not complete, there was a problem halfway through Mysteries And Mayhem (too bad it started here as this song jams), and apparently three songs were not taped from that point. Audience 9.5 - You can relax into this show, it's occupying a very pleasant space when the soundwaves wash over you and you begin to have a sense of the size of the venue, the space around you, and the distance from the stage. Audience 8.7 - Many fans of the band, especially those who seek out Lemmy period recordings, look to this one as being easily top 3. It is left here untouched, even though to my ears it could use a volume boost but that can be done on the listener's end so it's not a deal-breaker at all. The recording is notable for being clear, and easy to discern Lemmy's immense power bass lines. I'd never heard it prior, so to me it was a very welcome addition to the collection. Audience 8.9 - This tape gets the nod for being a well-captured piece of music at a time when music was seeing significant change. One of those change bands, beginning in the 2nd half of the 70's, was Talking Heads and they remained at the forefront for quite a few years. Soundboard 10 - This is a rare "10" perfection rating that is not given out unless and until a recording stops you dead in your tracks and commands your undivided attention. You know it when you hear it, and this is about as good as it can get short of you being placed in the optimal spot at the venue and even then you may not be getting something as good as this! Audience 8.8 - A well made recording that does straddle the fence a bit. There's some narrowness in how well defined the extreme ends are in both low and high end, meaning your middle frequencies are spot-on, clear, and defined but when you get to the real high end it gets crinkly up there. It does not damage the listening experience but could if you really crank up the volume. The taper does some adjusting it seems, as the show progresses it sounds like the tonality, or levels...something changes slightly...I don't know what really happens but sometimes this show is dialed in and sounds really great and then just ever so slightly it gets less defined or maybe it is my imagination. Either way, this is a really decent recording. -
Audience 9.2 - I would have given this a higher rating but for some occasional volume fluctuations. Minus those, this is a "raise the hair on your back" type of recording. I can't explain it, some tapes just have it, this unquantifiable element, it's a lot to do with the band being recorded as much as it is in how they were recorded, and where exactly the taper sat, and what he used to record - so you take all that and factor it in to what is happening to you as you listen to an event that took place decades ago...that comes to life again and you are right there. Audience 9.3 - This glorious tape is full of greatness in that it is lively, full-bodied, clear, and close without distorting. FM Broadcast 9.2 - Even though this is a broadcast, it retains a "rough" mix quality to it which suits the band's sound and style. Soundboard 9.1 - A decent if slightly muted mix, although drums and vocals retain more of an animated feel about their sound. I like this period, it sounds very 1970's (as if Frank ever really sounded any different) but I am not greedy and I take any board tape I can get, this one is certainly worthy of the collection. Audience 9.5 - Astounding for a 1970 era audience tape, it's got amazing atmosphere and plenty of headroom. The balance here is really good with vocals where they should be, which is very up front, but drums sound fantastic here and the piano sounds perfectly mixed between the two. I can't find too much to complain about with this one. Fantastic! Audience 8.9 - One of the early efforts by Dan Lampinski to capture live music with good equipment. It's a decent job, you can tell clearly that the guy had a knack for it. The atmosphere he managed to get on tape was always very realistic and managed to remain unobtrusive even if it got loud. Soundboard 9.3 - This is not the complete show, but what we do have is required listening. Some minor technical flaws present on a couple of occasions, these aren't deal-breakers though. Soundboard 9.4 - Clear and bold (especially percussion) capturing a very fine creative period of the band (the dual guitar with Neal Schon being especially notable). I did notice a slight amount of distortion in the lower frequencies but it's barely noticeable. The mix does change towards the end of No One To Depend On and a lot of the boominess and excessive volume is dialed back so it mitigates any distortion present. SANTANA Denver Coliseum Denver, CO. Soundboard 9.0 -A somewhat confusing mix, almost as if a ghost is present in the board! Well what it actually is might not be that spooky at all, just the effects loop they use for what seems to be the kick drum, or drums in general. It's their signature, a background "noise" the resembles phasing, and gives the band a unique sound. Does it work for a soundboard tape is the question - and I think it can be slightly distracting but it's not used continuously. Other than that I think this is quite OK. Audience 9.4 - This is a band that has attained the kind of status that warrants a serious examination of their live "bootleg" catalog. In particular, I think the years 1987 to 1992 are the important years, and any tapes that are listenable are considered collectible but the ones that are excellent, as this one is, should be sought out. Why? Because Guns 'N Roses was more than the sum of their parts, and the music that happened on stage more often than not seemed to hold that most elusive quality - Magic. Soundboard 9.7 - Pro recording in a live in-studio setting so it better be as good as it gets, and this is. Aside from minor tape hiss (only noticeable during the lulls), this is near perfection. Audience 9.0 - This is actually how The Bangles should sound live. This is as punk as I have heard them. Audience 8.8 - The sound of this recording owes almost all of its characteristics to the house PA sound. What I mean is this: The recorder very accurately captured exactly what this gig sounded like, and so if there is any particular thing that is not as good as it could be, we need to talk to the sound man. This tape captures this show in excellent quality, I would say the rating reflects more what the sound itself actually was like at this show - not great (for me I just did not love the drum sounds, and thought the guitars could be louder) but really very good. I think it is a matter of preference then, because some people might really like the way this show sounds coming out of the main PA system. Audience 8.7 - This is a GREAT 8.7, and what I mean is that while technically speaking the sonics are not ideal, the entirety of this recording is GREAT! It has a feel to it, it captures a moment in a highly tangible way, from the feeling of being in the pit, to the sense of time and space, and the "in your face" nature of the audio itself. All in all I really enjoyed this for what it is and it is something I can definitely recommend highly. Soundboard 8.8 - This is the one the fans have all been waiting for. There are a lot of recordings out there from this period but NONE sound like this! Ferocious! The drums are frightening, vocals up front and scary AF. Midrange is a little busy, but it all sounds so much better than what I am used to listening to, and you know the reality is that unless you are listening to a board tape, this band is damn hard to listen to just because of the cacophony they generate on stage. So, the consensus here is that this has to be considered as a MUST have. SLAYER Blue Moon Oberhausen, Germany 20th June 1985 1. Introduction 2. Hell Awaits 3. Aggressive Perfector 4. Captor of Sin 5.
