Radio Broadcast 9.1 - A great document! Sounds fine, a touch of hiss but it is amazing how good this sounds for its age - I have heard recent radio broadcasts that sound worse. Soundboard 9.4 - A lovely bright and clear sound, only noise I hear is between songs. I also love the fact that this dates from a period where there's not an abundance of Kansas recordings. I have to consider this a must have for Kansas collectors. Kansas Sjiwa Summer Rock Festival Horse Racing Course Baarlo, The Netherlands August 22, 1981 Audio Visions Tour 01 - Song For America 02 - Got To Rock On 03 - Paradox 04 - Point Of Know Return 05 - Dust In the wind 06 - Miracles Out Of Nowhere 07 - Loner 08 - Down The Road 09 - Portrait (He Knew) 10 - Carry On Wayward Son -
Audience 8.8 - A rather good tape, it's kind of rare to find something like this just because of the extreme volume and what not that metal presents to taping gear - but this one shines. Sometimes the rhythm guitar seems to drop out a little in the mix, every now and then but that might be a PA or mix thing. FM Broadcast 8.9 - Good because it's a broadcast, but there is some compression so you do not get the crisp, soaring highs and separation of instruments is not perfect. It's a somewhat "rough" professional recording and I am not talking about just age or generation of tape either - some of this is probably in the actual recording and/or live sound mix. That being said - it's a really good tape nonetheless and worthy of your collection. Blue Oyster Cult Centrum Worcester, MA. September 24, 1982 01. Pre-show interview 02. Audience 8.7 - This is a really good, but flawed, recording. The good points are that it is clear, and has unmistakable stereo panning, and a LOT of good live atmosphere (not the obnoxious audience kind of atmosphere!). The flaws are that taper is working hard (to his credit) to get into a sweet spot and while doing this the signal to his deck fades in and out slightly - the effect is one of phasing, so it's not a deal-breaker flaw it's just you have to accept that vocals and what not at times sound really far back and then sound much closer...at various points during the show (I should say guitar does this too, maybe less often). The reason why you'll stick it out is because when it is good...it's great. Iron Maiden International Amphitheater Chicago, IL. 1982-09-21 01 - Wrathchild 02 - Run to the Hills 03 - Children of the Damned 04 - The Number of the Beast 05 - talk 06 - 22 Acacia Avenue 07 - Hallowed Be Thy Name 08 - Iron Maiden -
Soundboard 8.9 - Man, this is just amazing. It sounds a little dated, maybe a little faded, but definitely NOT jaded! The live sound mix isn't perfect here, I think guitars should be louder (but at least in this board I can hear every note of the bass) but in defense of the guitars I can hear both of them somewhat distinctly. Vocals do suffer, they are pushed well back of the mix, at times they get closer to the right spot, but it's all good they are there but just not at the center of the mix. I think this is classic stuff. Slayer Country Club Reseda, LA, CA. September 7th 1985 Hell Awaits Tour 1. Hell Awaits 2. Aggressive Perfector 3. Captor Of Sin 4. The Final Command 5. Soundboard 9.2 - In this mix, vocals are front and center, followed next by drums (cool) and guitars which sound just evil AF. This is surely one all fans will slay for (see what I did there?). Audience 8.7 - A little subdued maybe, but all the instrumentation is clearly heard, and dynamically it resides in the middle band frequencies and has a decent bass response but at the expense of maybe guitars which seem to sit just behind the bass. Considering the gig (inside a prison) I have to say it's a very good job, and worthy of a spin. ULI JON ROTH Klingelpuetz Prison Cologne, Germany 1979-10-03 2nd Show 01. Sundown 02. Earthquake 03. Soundboard 9.0 - A VERY animated and live sounding recording. There is nothing sterile about this! It bristles with electric mayhem and tension, sometimes it goes a little over the edge (takes a minute for the mix to even out a little bit - and it seems to lean slightly onto upper mid/high end leaves some of the balls of the bass out, but there's enough meat here to add some bass and I think once you do that you'll have a real banger with this one. Audience 8.7 - A somewhat crude tape that manages to still present some meat you can savor. The slightly overloaded tape can still allow everything to be heard although drums are not very distinct (cymbal washes do clear the mix because they sit in the high band range) and neither are the vocals - but here's the saving grace: The guitar is present and accounted for and you really NEED that with this band because this guy is phenomenal. Audience 9.3 - Excellent quality, in fact I think this is a professional recording done on or very close to the stage. It has certain tell-tale qualities, like there being minimal audience noise and very clear, well-balanced band. Good mix here, even without Duane present I think most listeners will find this most welcome especially considering two songs are played featuring Johnny Winter. Audience 8.7 - A new re-mastering has taken what was once a very muddy recording and breathed significant new life into it. I mean, if ever there was a time to be collecting it is right now. So while it still might be considered as an average audience recording, the fact is that there is much more in this tape than what was once believed and which is why it flew under the Sabbath collector radar. But it's actually pretty good, I can only be a little critical if I analyze what is happening at the lower end here, not much definition and guitar blends into the bass somewhat and provide a volume backdrop that is "dark" and foreboding but not a mess either. I think people should give this re-mastered version a chance, I did and I am very glad I did. Black Sabbath 1971-01-18 City Hall Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK 01. Paranoid 02. N.I.B. 03. War Pigs 04. Audience 8.9 - Excellent quality, I did find it worthwhile in almost every regard but keep in mind it is a large venue so it is not a close, tight, and super dynamic recording. It is, however, clear and well done, and overall the sound is picked up well from the main P.A. system, it has force, it has clarity, it has a good "live" quality to it with all the atmosphere of being there. Audience 8.3 - not a good sounding tape, but it gives you enough guitar and vocals too actually keep listening, and you'll actually be glad you stuck with it because here's one thing I get from this: A totally uncirculated tape that shows Led Zeppelin absolutely crushing it, in fact so much so that I really wish this was professionally recorded and released legit because it's a much better show than Long Beach. Most songs are incomplete, audio comes and goes - actually occasionally getting pretty good, but it's hit or miss all the way. Audience 8.6 - The first thing you want to do when you begin to play this is skip the first song. The taper is bustling around trying to get into his seat, the tape deck microphone is buried deep within his clothing and the sound mix on stage is still being dialed in...all told this track is unlistenable. What happens next is miraculous - the sun begins to shine in the darkness! We now have a recording to enjoy, and it is enjoyable. It's not Randy, but look, what was asked of Bernie was impossible and he did a remarkable job filling in while they searched for a permanent replacement. Audience 8.5 - A total time capsule, I mean, if you want to know what the 70's sounded like just pop this CD in. Kind of dated but hippie cool. Sound is good, but a little crowded in the middle and raucous in a fun way. Your ears will bump into the guy next to you, and you'll be pushed and shoved a little but man, you are at the show having a blast. The thing about listening to mid 70's live Aerosmith is you are always kind of tuning in to hear signs of the impending train-wreck about to happen at any minute and I guess that is the charm of it. Soundboard 9.0 - A somewhat dated sounding board tape. It's good enough, it's better than a muddy, distant audience tape, but it is less than the typical crispness you expect out of a board tape. There's a very driving guitar tone on here though, and it really powers this show in a highly dynamic way. Audience 9.2 - An incomplete show, but who's counting? Fourteen rock and roll songs by masters of this style. When you hear the songs that you are familiar with, there is an air of this being kind of less of a nostalgic performing of classics and more of a rare opportunity to hear the authentic performances of them in a small club live setting. Audience 8.7 - I can imagine the difficulty in trying to capture something like this with all of the challenges not least of which is sheer volume and venues not ideal for the kind of acoustics metal presents. Does that mean this recording is bad? No, it's obviously done on gear that can handle the job, but to my ears it's something that you will need at least two songs to adjust, but once you do, it becomes the kind of tape that finds you sort of hanging on to see what happens next. It just feels like it will keep improving and maybe it does, or maybe you just find that you kind of dig it. MEGADETH TOKYO 1988 1ST NIGHT Live at Nakano Sunplaza Tokyo, Japan 12th July 1988 01. Audience 8.8 - I give this recording high marks for being one of the good ones, and you know how important any live recording with Randy Rhoades is so instantly when you hear this, and your ears go "wow, cool", well that means we have something special. Now, it does take a song or so to get balanced, maybe that is the taper and maybe that is the house, either way it is typical of an old audience tape to start a little rough but settle in as it goes. I am not saying this is super-duper, but when you have at least a very listenable tape, where you can clearly hear Randy and Ozzy, maybe a tiny bit of overload here but it doesn't matter - my ears don't lie and I felt this one delivered the goods. Audience 8.7 - This could also get a few tenths of a point up for the careful re-mastering that recently was applied to the old tape. It definitely needed a refresh, and it got one and it is way the better for it. The highlight for me is that Randy's guitar is the clearest instrument, followed by Ozzy and the others all decently placed in the soundfield with the only knock being the overall clarity and dynamics. That being said, this is a great recording for the time period, knowing how precious few great sounding Blizzard tour tapes there are. I have to rank this in the top 5 I think, because the guitar is so good (you get the tone, and a great sense of the spirit of the room and the band). Professionally recorded, vinyl source 9.4 - Exceptional. If you are listening for the musicianship than you will love it. This was ripped from a vinyl source and consequently some artifacts are present although minimized. I am inclined to believe some of this is a live in studio recording (listen to "I'm On Fire For You Baby" and tell me that is from the same concert). Audience 8.8 - A good early period show when he was probably in the UK for the first go-round. He made the most of it, with some BBC appearances and a huge gig at Reading which went off well. The recording here is very good, a little hissy and maybe not as clear as we would prefer but it has balls, and everyone is pretty distinct in the mix. The bass and drums are devastating, and Pat is ferocious! The BBC material is excellent.Pat Travers Band Reading Festival Thames-side Arena, Richfield Ave. Reading, UK. August 28th, 1976 1. Audience 8.8 - Loud keyboards and vocals, great drum sound at the large outdoor arena in Long Beach. Audience 8.4 - A muddier sound, not nearly as distinct as the Long Beach show but due to the scarcity of live Giuffria shows I would say this deserves your attention. Hard rock group from Houston active during the mid 70's and were primarily known as a covers band, playing many of the well known clubs in town. They recorded a handful of original songs in 1975, and disbanded following some unfortunate incidents while on the road. A single 7" record was released, however, and gained enough traction that rhythm guitarist Jimmy Lee Dean decided to continue on and recruit new members (the era known as Jeremiah MK II). This version of the band recorded a full length LP which never saw the light of day as the manager absconded with the master reels soon after the sessions, and nobody heard from him since. Eventually, we rediscovered these masters and attempted to transfer them in the studio but the tapes had severely degraded, the material, such as it is, is also contained on this collection. A 40th Anniversary reunion concert occurred in 2014, and excerpts from that show are included on the 2nd disc. All known recordings of this band are included in this package.
