Rockford - Soundboard 9.6 - Overflowing with reckless power, this recording literally leaps out of the speakers and ROCKS your balls off! More like this please!! Long Beach - Audience 9.4 - A recording that rivals any soundboard tape, it has all the energy, dynamics, clarity, atmosphere, and feel you can ask for and more. I hope the band gets a chance to hear this one, if they haven't already. I am sure they would be astounded. CHEAP TRICK ROCKFORD ARMORY ROCKFORD, IL. OCTOBER 31, 1977 Disc 1 01. Sale!A nice trip through the most important years for Chicago. All of the audio quality is either very good or excellent, with a mix of audience and soundboard sources. Includes a wonderful soundboard recording of Terry Kath's last show. A fitting way to end a great set. Nice touch to include a video CD with some real nice old footage. FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit. I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. Audience 8.4 - While not nearly as spectacular as the Uniondale ’77 (a pro-mixed board btw), this is still an important tape being that it is among the last of the Kath era shows. It’s also not bad at all – in a narrow bandwidth it manages to offer decent separation of instruments and nothing annoying in the frequencies. It’s a solid capture on limited equipment and for that I give the thumbs up to the tapers. Soundboard 9.5 - What is this and why had I never heard it before? Damn! Look, stop whatever you are doing and just get this now. Terry Kath. Terry Kath. Terry Kath. This is his resume on tape. Not only is it a good board tape, but it specifically showcases Terry’s playing in a way you don’t often get on other tapes of a band with this range of equipment. I swear I can hear the pick on his strings. Damn this is a great show and damn did we lose one hell of a player in Terry Kath. Soundboard 8.8 - A real surprise, and a real treat this one! The band is playing a college campus and having been on the road for a while their chops are all finely honed. It’s so nice to hear a tape where Terry’s guitar is articulate and clear and not buried in the mud. This is NOT a muddy tape, if you are getting tired of hearing all those muddy early 70’s tapes out there, this one is for you. Chicago Stephen F.
