• Aud 7.9  - You know how so many of the 68 audience tapes sound horrid?  This is not one of them!  This actually captures a moment in time where you get a real sense of the venue, and of the time. Vocals and guitar are pretty clear with some cool “hall” vibe, but not echoey just vibey. Nice!
  • Aud 7.0 - Distant and muddy, but Jimi’s guitar thankfully cuts through the murkiness. If you are collecting, than you know good quality 1970 shows are in limited supply, but at least this one sort of features the guitar more or less.
  • Aud 7.0 Not the best, but this is par for the course when it comes to 68 auds.  Providence Aud 6.9 Another not so nice one, too loud for the poor tape deck!  For collectors only.
  • Both Shows Disc 1 Aud 6.8 There’s music here actually, but we all know these are not the best of the best. Disc 2 Aud 7.5 Clearly the better of the two shows. You can really get into this one, even though vocals are bit buried. Band just played freaking loud, gotta expect that sometimes!
  • Aud 6.8 - Overloaded tape, and raucous crowd, but with all that Jimi’s guitar cuts right through and surprisingly is a decent sound and not paper thin. Strange tape, should be horrible but there’s just enough here to suck you right into to this show. I tell you what, you really get a sense of the volume of a Hendrix gig!
  • Studio quality with some tape hiss 8.7
  • Aud 8.3 - A loud tape, but surprisingly clear and enjoyable. Comes from a very low gen or master source, very crisp in every frequency, as if optimized for a commercial release – must be a remaster because I do not remember this being so good.
  • Aud 8.3 - Not your typical mumbled mess of a tape here, this one is rather powerful without the distortion. Anyone could appreciate this tape, which is why it comes recommended by most collectors.
  • Aud 6.8 - Rough tape this one is, but you get a very interesting sort of immediate echo effect especially with snare drum – Red House sounds pretty decent because the arena really shapes the sound, providing a natural cavernous echo which makes the song sound haunting. Not a throw away tape!
  • Aud 7.6 - Exciting brutal live sound with bristling, tangible electricity that will send hairs on your neck to shivering. Not pro, not perfect, but has that manic excitement and energy that makes the gig.
  • SDBRD 9.0 and Aud 7.8  - What you have here are two big upgrades. The first is a well travelled sdbrd that had problems that were never addressed, but should have been. Mainly, hiss and uneven volume. Those have been fixed here, and the results are spectacular!  The second show was not terrible but got little respect mainly because of terrible tape noise. Thanks to modern technology, that has been fixed. Now, this tape is MUCH easier to listen to, even though it still gets cluttered during very loud passages.
  • Aud 6.9 - Yeah, kinda low rating but super high energy and fantastic playing, early energy.
  • Pro Studio 9.5 - This collection would be for the person who does not wish to sift through exhaustive comps of early B-sides and studio sessions. Rather, it showcases a cross section of his early sessions designed to reveal only the highlights. It’s certainly easier to tackle especially if you plan on bringing the disc for a road trip.

  • Audience -  all shows  Berlin Aud 7.2 A reasonably clear tape, Jimi vocals come through and guitar is right up front too. Drums a little buried but you get enough to know what’s going on. Enjoyable! Cologne Aud 7.0 Mono recording without much separation of instruments, guitar being the clearest here. Hamburg Aud 6.6 Very loud and distorted recording.  Nuremberg Aud 6.7 Thin, with tape noise present, no dynamics, only Jimi's guitar is heard but it is heard clearly ringing out like he was the only one mic’d up!
  • Aud 7.7  - Guitar is the dominant instrument on this tape, which features qualities I can appreciate knowing that there is so much worse out there than this. The DVD features a short segment of footage synced properly with the audio so collectors will enjoy that.
  • Aud 7.7  - A rather clear and exciting recording. Not especially dynamic maybe, but this is one of the few 1970 audience recordings that have qualities that are more enjoyable than not. Worth having!
  • Aud 6.8  - Muffled, and a short tape clocking in at under 30 minutes. But, you know what?  I still think you should have this if you are a collector, the tape itself is presented as it was recorded and for a historical document it is interesting.
  • Aud 7.0 - A touch of distortion and noisy but ferociously exciting in every way. You get a vivid sense of the electric atmosphere from the first notes. That alone draws you right into this show.
  • Aud 6.9  -  Distant, with only Jimi’s singing and a booming bass audible, except for when Jimi is soloing and then you hear his leads bouncing almost like quadraphonic around the venue. Now, that does add some cool atmospherics, but this tape is for the hard core.  Lastly, I can say at least this – Red House sounds much better, and I am sure if someone remastered this tape it would bring out a lot more good stuff so it is salvageable IMHO.
  • Pro Studio 9.3 - Rare studio, outtakes, 7” B-sides mostly with Jimi, some arguably without but we’ll never know for sure. A good collection nonetheless.
  • Aud 8.8 - This recording sounds hella-killa man!  Bonus material on the other disc is also very excellent. A fantastic collector item that you do not want to ignore if you do not have this material.
  • CD1 Aud 7.6 There are several tape sources for this show, to my ears I like this one the most. CD 2 Aud 7.8 A little better here, maybe it’s just a tad bit more separation of instruments and overall timbre.
  • Aud 8.8 - Utterly fantastic! Early experience, very good sound, total grooviness abounds.
  • Aud 8.8 - Exceptional for an audience capture during this time period. Taken from three sources and merged, this tape offers the listener a really good idea of what to have expected from Jimi and company in 1970. Powerful, if not a little unbalanced at times, but infinitely enjoyable.
  • Aud 7.4 - Thankfully this is not too much of a muddy mess, I give an average rating not because it is that bad, mainly because it is kind of distant but someone mastered it and kicked up the levels so it sounds closer.

  • Aud 6.9 - Not very good, but I think someone has mastered this nonetheless because a lot of the mid band muck is gone, and you can hear Jimi sing!  You get his guitar next in this mix, and at times the sun peaks from behind the clouds. I think, if you are a collector, this is of historical importance due to Jimi’s connection with the Southern blues.
  • Studio Quality 9.7 Kind of a classic amongst the collectors due to its great song flow and high level playing and jamming.
  • Aud 8.4 - Oh how I love this show!  Why?  It’s reasonably clear with only a bit of upper level distortion – but man, this just blows EVERYTHING away!  The set list for one, it’s got some little gems on it, and the playing – YUP – he’s killin’ it. What else?  Oh, a very intimate feel, just has a sort of immediate impact kind of sound. Mitch and Noel are spot on, Jimi feeds off of their energy as well as the audience. A MUST!
  • Aud 8.4 - A very good, clear tape for the time (includes Corn Exchange and Saville Theater 67 both excellent). Only problem is, the taper recorded less than 1 minute on almost every song except for a Red House. Kind of infuriating. (Red House is complete and smokes! It seems this was recorded by someone who interviewed Hendrix, so he probably just wanted small pieces to embellish his interview tape to be broadcast at his college station or something).
  • Aud 6.9  - A smoking hot show marred by sub par recording quality. That being said, collectors will want this due to the scarcity of live recordings during this part of the 1968 Tour (notwithstanding the excellent Ottawa show now legitimately released).
  • A mix of pro SDBRD and decent aud. The sdbrd is 9.5, the aud portion is 8.0 and taken from a vinyl source. There are a handful of tracks taken from a film audio source and those are great as well.
  • Aud 7.5 - A very decent and clear recording from perhaps a little further back in the hall than one would prefer, but guitar is prominent, then drums and bass with Jimi vocals a little bit behind the noise. Also, I am glad the sound has a little separation, enough to discern everything that is going on, so big plus there!
  • Disc 1 Philadelphia 1969 Aud 6.5 Pretty bad one, sound is distant and distorted due to Jimi’s insane volume and lack of taper knowledge of simple dynamics. Disc 2 Philadelphia 1970 aud 7.2 A relief to the ears after playing disc one of this set.
  • Aud 7.3 – 7.5  - This recording ranges due to the fact that it is a 3 source merge. When it is at a 7.5 or even higher, it is pretty good stuff, like Red House for instance really shines. The weaker parts of the show just lack some definition and clarity but you can hear everything on stage, with some atmosphere too. Overall it is a special show, you get that sense from the bands performance.
  • Aud 7.3 - Low levels, but surprisingly clear for this tour. You get this for the set list obviously as he played gems like Are You Experienced and Spanish Castle Magic. Disc two features the additional material from other venues and is very decent sound.
  • Various sources SDBRD 9.0 Aud 8.6 - In order to present the entire concert, various sources had to be used but it’s well worth dealing with some level fluctuation because this is a smoking hot gig. The DVD presents the film that was shot of the entire festival, it is kind of dark and grainy in spots, other times it is nice and bright. Perhaps this is why it was never officially released?
  • Pro Studio Quality 9.3 features Stephen Stills and other luminaries of the time. A nice artifact!
  • Aud 7.3 - Gets better, is loud but not too overloaded. Small club atmosphere, a real treasure of a ’68 show.
  • Aud 9.0 - One of THE BEST audience tapes yet to be officially released by Dagger. You just have to have this if you collect Jimi.
