This is the CD only follow up release to the first album by Hooker. These tracks were culled from the bands personal archives and were transferred from the original reels. The time frame spans a period of several years, from around 1978 to approx. 1986. Some of the tracks do feature on the first album, but are going to be alternate versions, mixes, etc. There are also a few live tracks, we concluded those would have been from around 1974 making them some of the oldest surviving recordings of the band.

Audience 8.7 - This recording is one of those that initially has you thinking “ok, good but not great” but seriously, let it play. It is a LOUD tape, yes, sometimes bordering on distortion in the upper mid frequencies, yes – but when you get to Unchained there are moments where you completely get on board with this one. Trust me. It has a magic element to it despite being a little overloaded. I got sucked into it big time and my ears adjusted after only one song, after that it was tons of fun and the tape is close up and bristling with unbelievable electric energy. In other words – this was a total blast! Audience 8.7 - A raucous affair this one, the music is recorded very well, on excellent gear, but the stage mix is not ideal, but I am going to be critical mainly because I don’t like where the guitars are in the sound mix. The music is hot, not only performance wise but also on the tape itself, it’s pushing the meters to the breaking point…but it doesn’t break…much. There’s some “noise” somewhere in it, it’s not bad, it’s not a deal breaker, but I can tell it is there and I think it’s just some minor breakup in one band somewhere in the mid range. All in all, this is a pretty good one to get. Audience 8.7 - A rip-roaring blast of a tape! First thing you are going to think after maybe 1 minute is how dejected Montrose and Journey must have been after following the ascending Van Halen. Man, I felt bad for them and this show happened decades ago! It’s just the sonic equivalent of a shooting star, Eddie is blistering and hits every note with perfection, the bass is detailed and not just a booming thud, drums are OK and DLR is a little behind the band but who cares? The taper did a fine job, some minor hiccups every now and then but thankfully very few to deal with and they don’t last long. I am liking this show and the tape is just fine for its age. A keeper! Audience 8.7 & Radio Broadcast 9.4 - Both of these are amazing, even the audience tape which is frighteningly intense manages to deliver a wallop. So, let me prepare you best I can, what you know about this band probably comes from their mid to late 70’s FM radio hit singles but my friend this stuff ain’t that…no not by a long shot. This is balls to the wall heavy prog tinged acid rock. There are plenty of moments where you can’t tell where the guitars and keyboards are coming from because they bob and weave almost as one instrument…brilliant! Audience 8.8 - A great atmospheric recording – I think I have figured it out though – so people used to go to concerts and party, with the musician on stage performing just an excuse to be with hundreds of other pot smoking, over-hyped hippies. What I am trying to say is that the audience is a little too into it…in my opinion. Great show though. This recording has been available for years now but this is the first time the master reels have ever been properly digitized. This show captures Neil Young and his backing band The Stray Gators touring in support of his Time Fades Away album. This is a good show but Neil is plagued with guitar problems and spends about a quarter of show tuning his guitar. Also of note David Crosby and Graham Nash join Neil onstage for Old Man.

Audience 8.4 - A middle of the road stadium recording that is quite clear but not very close. That being said, I found much to appreciate from this one – namely the curious line-up at this time. Tony Martin singing, ok, he is decent enough and certainly professional caliber but to me, this just is not Black Sabbath. It’s a really badass metal band with Tony Iommi on guitar. This recording does allow you to really hear both Tony’s pretty loud and clear. This was also the last show for the short lived Iommi / Martin / Burt / Chimes / Nicholls line-up, and a great show it was.

Audience 8.7 - This is a solid effort, it captures a typically rowdy J. Geils party atmosphere without sacrificing the music at all. Taper has good seats, and he manages not to get too bumped around because it sounds like a lot of stuff was being consumed this evening in 1972. A good one to have! J. Audience 8.4 - This tape was made by a very sincere taper, you can clearly tell the person tried very hard to make it work. I think, if I had to guess, the problem was not him, it was more than likely improper microphone type and simple passage of time, because this is a clear and strong tape that falls a little short in some aspects making it a little above average where it could have been amazing. The tape struggles through The Lamia, where you get the effects of age and degradation. The audio quality suffers a little bit because of distance, and that robs some dynamics and clarity, but here’s the thing: The equipment was good quality and that comes through as you do get a certain realism, a sense of the venue and atmosphere that the open mic captures. The stereo field on this tape is pretty wide, so my guess is that microphones were hoisted above the audience somewhere middle of the arena. I think I like this tape in some regards, and I definitely do not consider it rubbish and neither will you. One last thought – I found this recording did slowly improve as the show progressed, perhaps dipping a bit at the end of disc one but not catastrophically. Audience 8.8 - This is the good stuff, seriously good I mean. What you are getting in this one is a band really unstoppable, with a monstrous hit in Frankenstein that the audience is going nuts for and for good reason – a penultimate version that will leave you completely floored. Audience 8.8 - Easily one of the best audience recordings of the tour. Very close to the main P.A. system on Tony’s side of the stage, this puts Ozzy a little in the background but not so much he cannot be heard reasonably well. It’s just, well, it’s the sheer POWER on display by the band that makes this one so special and that the recording manages to deliver that without glaring problems (and in 1973, wow!) is a miracle. Radio Broadcast & Audience 8.8/8.5 - The radio material sounds its age but is a fine document in good enough shape to give you a deeper appreciation for this hugely influential band. The audience material is from a small club, and therefore does not suffer stadium sound problems meaning you can hear everyone pretty solid especially the guitar which is great. I am happy to be able to hear these recordings knowing a little background on the band and how they forged their own path in the music industry. A bit of ancient historical importance on the 1974 show, Judas Priest opened and come on at the end to jam with Budgie making it the first recorded appearance of Judas Priest on tape! Excellent Soundboard recording of a highly regarded Texas rock group prominent in the mid '70's. They played an original, hybrid progressive, upbeat hard rock along with more Austin, Texas flavored "Tex-Mex" Southern infused rock and roll...like I said a hybrid style. Unfortunately it did not take hold anywhere outside of Austin, so it remained undiscovered but certainly in Texas the name is extremely well respected as it should be. Well worth discovering for yourself!

Audience 8.3 - Both shows recorded by same taper so sound quality consistent throughout. This is another one of those “right in the middle of the action” tapes, where literally you sense the surroundings, and settle yourself in to what will be a wild night of rock and roll music. Quality is decent, without too much in the way of dynamics, but also this is not a muddy, crappy recording, it’s just not showcasing a wide range of tones. What you do get is a total immersion, and a very real sense of the electricity in the air (and in the excitable crowd). FOGHAT Music Hall Boston MA. Audience 9.1 - A recording that delivers everything that you want, especially the guitar tone which is simply glorious. Audience 9.2 - A recording that does more than merely capture a live concert on tape, it captures the dynamics and palpable vibe of the event. This is lovely stuff, with the band delivering stunning readings of majestic progressive rock numbers like Sound Chaser and Close To The Edge. To be honest, sometimes the overly jazzy keyboards of Moraz do conflict with the style and sound of the band but mostly he is able to provide the correct sounds during the key parts. FM Broadcast 8.9 - This recording was done from the radio broadcast even though most people think it is from the reels (it is from a reel to reel, but a recording made from the broadcast). Audience 8.8 - This is a tape that does improve as it goes ultimately coming to a comfortable place, and one might say it is warm and well balanced. When I hear this I can better appreciate this period of the band, when they were experimenting with their music trying to find a place in the changing world of FM radio and top 40. Does that make it bad? I used to shake my head, but now I understand it, and I find that what they were doing was NEEDED in order to prevent ALL music from that time period sucking so much. Audience 8.2/8.6 - The recording starts out borderline, probably due to taper position…but hang in there because midway through the 4th song it improves and becomes a more interesting document because of it, First of all, it’s literally Bob Seger in the peak of his powers with a handful of chart toppers to display proudly. Normally that would not move me, but Bob Seger is old school, he delivers the goods even if his songs are considered “mainstream”, I mean, its good rock and roll no matter what. Audience 8.7 - A very good tape for the time, and what a good time it is for the Stones. What I really enjoyed the most about this recording is how clear Mick Taylor is in the mix. It’s not a super bright sounding tape, and it is not muddy, it is better than average but it shines in atmosphere, performance, and vibe. The band is clearly enjoying the show as much as the audience is. A keeper! Audience 8.5/8.7 - Both tapes are not well known, and are pre-Close To The Edge making them quite interesting to the fans of early period Yes. Both tapes sound pretty good, with the nod going to Tucson for just that little bit of clarity it has overall. Audience - 9.5, 8.5, 8.8 We start with a real cracker of a tape, recorded close up with excellent gear…hard to put this down it is extremely captivating. Then we have a first – the first gig in Europe by the band, and it is a very good tape but we are going to feel the difference between this and the first disc. It’s not got the dynamics of the ’77, but it is considered a very good tape nonetheless. The final disc contains a very good recording with plenty of atmosphere and some dynamics, maybe a touch of clutter in a very specific mid band frequency but it is minor to my ears. Hard to find anything about this recording to complain about, it’s amazingly life-like and extremely dynamic – about the only fault is how short it is. Audience 9.2 - Amazing recording! Not that it is perfect, in fact, the audio mix is off, but it is off in a spectacular way. So, it’s basically guitar, I mean, plugged directly into your brain and proceeding to torch your brain cells until they are dry spots on the carpet. Yeah, it’s like that, but don’t worry if you do not hear vocals perfectly, or bass is too low, or drums are not pounding because while all that is here, it is predominately the Johnny Winter and his hypnotizing psychedelic blues at maximum volume show. Audience 8.6 - A clear tape, possibly a master source, that presents a very nice performance by the band with a tape that gives you a reasonable recollection of the evening. The tape leans towards a high end propensity while sacrificing any deep lows but I am 100% sure you will LOVE this one because it’s just one of those tapes that seems to get better, the ears adjust, and before you know it you are saying “damn this is pretty good”…because it actually is. As Pretty Woman ends (and there’s a moment in the song where Dave lets loose on some dingus that threw something at him) and it goes into Eddie’s solo, man, this tape TAKES OFF and becomes an easy 9.3 rating. Audience 8.8 - Very clear and with enough dynamics present to really provide an authentic experience of virtually being there. These kinds of recordings, while technically not considered as excellent (unfairly) due to the measurable fidelity of the audio (in the objective sense) are actually excellent in their own right. This is a well done recording, with the sound “floating” above you and giving you a sense of time and place, of literally being there. Audience 9.0 - Before I first heard this I assumed it would be a tough listen based on other recordings from this venue. Well, I am very happy to report that my assumption was dead wrong! This is just a great, great recording for the time period. It does seem to be about midway back but this is not a liability in this situation because it seems to give an aura, a sense of time and place, with the ambience and natural echo (just a touch). I really love everything about this tape! Spirit Mammoth Gardens, Denver, Co June 5th, 1970 01. Decisions (by Gypsy) 02. Sweet Stella Baby 03. 1984 04. It's All The Same 05. Fresh Garbage 06. Audience 8.2 - A somewhat average tape that is brand new to circulation and captures a good time for Lou when he had some great songs and great players with him. Plus side of the recording is that it is low gen and clear enough to hear the band although keyboards are quite behind in the stage mix. Lou is more prominent, with bass and guitar next. A good tape for a lo-fi cassette recorder snuck into the venue in the mid 70’s. Soundboard 8.7 - This is clear enough and is a board tape but my guess is that it is actually sourced from a line feed (video) because I do notice some compression on the signal. Still, it is highly enjoyable, getting ample amounts of bass, drums, and of course guitars (even some panning effects now and then, very cool). Capital Centre Landover, MD.
