CD1 FM Broadcast 8.8 A little hiss present, and a little “compression” but a good tight sound nonetheless. The Miami 78 is Audience 8.3 With some big hall boom in the kick drum. CD 2 Audience 8.5 Thin in some places, but opens wider as it goes along. Taper possibly moves closer, and sound improves. CD 3 Audience 8.6 A loud, boisterous, beer soaked rock and roll affair with sound quality that I would describe as clear but missing some mid-band punch. It’s nice to have a chronological history sometimes, you get to hear a band just gain more and more confidence (not as if this band ever lacked any). This band’s sound and style really was custom made for these years but after that it dropped off the map. Too bad really, it’s a good time rock and roll music and transcends time. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good. Audience 8.7 - Every audience tape has a certain unique “timbre” to it, a quality hard to define – it encompasses distance from source, surrounding ambience, equalization, harmonics, and more. So, this recording is what I would call “very good” but different than other 88 Euro Zappa tapes in timbre. I find this one leaning too far in upper mid band and treble, not irritatingly, but wanted more bottom end. My ears were telling me that is what it wanted…yours may not it is all very subjective. Audience 8.0 – 8.5 This is one of those “right in the thick of it” tapes. Immersed into the crowd, you become part of the experience of the concert along with the tapers themselves. Is that good or bad? In this case it starts off a little shaky and gets better, and better, as the show progresses until at the end you realize you had a great time. Audience 8.1 - In the pantheon of ’69 Stones audience tapes, this one ranks as one of the more listenable ones. The recorder levels are low, so some tape hiss comes up at volume, but it is relatively clear, no murkiness (which historically is a sound killer), and you actually distinguish very well the two distinct guitars (but still sometimes can’t tell where Taylor ends and Keith begins (which is kind of what they strove for anyway). Audience 8.4 - A smooth recording, pretty stable, but does lack some punch therefore it is recommended to “season to taste”, but thankfully the pallet is there to lay on your coloring. Some minor tape hiss pervades but is kind of background, my hunch is that this tape went through some mastering process to add boost and it helps a lot. It’s a good tape and a great show! FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. Audience 9.1 - This recording is very very clean, and there is a ton of headroom where literally you can turn the volume all the way up and still get a very clean sound. There almost needs to be more mid punch, and at times, probably in sections that have been patched with a different source, there is a noticeable increase in volume/mid band. Audience 9.6 - Hallelujah! This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. The 88 tour had its share of sleepers, but this is not one of those, by all standards this has to be considered one of the best nights. Audience 8.5 - Despite being a clean recording (probably from a master), this is captured from possibly middle of venue meaning it does sound a little distant (vocals are the giveaway). At times, it sounds like the tapers try to adjust their position and the sound gets fuller, although the music is still kind of blended together and you don’t get distinct guitar notes, even though you get the overall impact of guitar – now solos are a different thing, because those seem to soar above it all and are actually much clearer and more present in the mix. Audience 8.6 - A lively and loud tape, with great atmosphere, in that you get the hall acoustics without unnecessary boominess or echo, just the right amount to give you that sense of being there. That makes for a unique listening experience because this show does not sound like the next show or the one before, the playing and arrangements are going to be different but so is the venue and acoustics. As long as the recording is good, and this one is pretty darn good, you will enjoy the show. Audience 8.4 - The Roundhouse in London was not the ideal place to make a stealth recording, and this one barely wins the struggle between room and distance to present a surprising, clear picture of a very early Dire Straits show. Songs “Me And My Friends” and “Real Girl” would be dropped from the set soon after this show, so having a tape like this should be considered important to the collector. When the gloss is removed it sounds like it could have been recorded in the mid ‘70’s. Audience 9.4 - This to me is what keeps me in the game. When I thought I had every 79 show (my favorite period) and this comes along…and….it…smokes…everything! Maybe not a perfect score in the audio dept. which by the way it is excellent (a little pegging of the meters when the band is in full on rage but it’s minor, a minor issue) but it delivers in just about every possible way. Frank’s playing is off the charts and his tone is evil. He sounds relaxed, and satisfied – all is going well. Maybe he forgot about this gig a day or two later, but I can’t get the CD out of my player (and not because it is stuck!). This just rules. Period. Audience 9.0 - I like the sound of this recording, it’s got a very nice and smooth bass which is pretty articulate, and the instruments in general are in perfect harmony with each other, you would be hard pressed to get a better mix even through the board. Audience 8.3 - I find these early club dates fascinating. It sounds closer to Taste than anything he was doing on subsequent tours. The guitar work is more off the cuff, edgier maybe. This recording features a pretty clear and up-front guitar, with vocals next and kick drum following. It’s good, a little hiss present, but to have tapes like this to hear the early period Rory post-Taste is most welcome. It does not offer a wide dynamic range, although it is pretty clear and you hear every instrument and vocals above all of it in good clarity (important when it comes to Free where vocals are a huge component). Nothing about this tape offends the ears sonically speaking. It could be argued by this time Free was sounding maybe a little tired, but that is subjective. Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother! I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable. Pro Studio and Pro Live All four volumes are excellent start to finish and even though songs do appear on other releases, there are inevitably always some gems that turn up on these well produced comps that you don’t find elsewhere. I think this one is well worth the effort, and you can cherry pick the volumes or go all in, save some money, and by getting the complete set you get the cool track sheet that does not come with each volume separately. Audience 8.7 - A bright tape, not so much depth of sound but certainly clear, and crunchy, with a prominent guitar that fills most of the space here. Give it five minutes and you will be having a good time and appreciating this line up because it is quite good…and so was the Dehumanizer album. Audience 8.2 - This rare old tape shows signs of age, with the typical problems such as tape hiss and some dropouts occasionally but it is saved because there is music underneath it, I mean, you do hear the band reasonably well and it happens that, for whatever reason, there is no abundance of ’79 shows by this band. Plenty of 80’s, and some pre-’79 too but not a lot of 1979 gigs. Also, of note this gig was the one right before their appearance on Rockpalast.

Audience 8.8 - A fascinating recording, obviously with high quality microphones because there’s a detail here, especially with drums and bass (managing to realistically capture the depth of bass and the precision of drums). Guitar and to a lesser degree vocals get pushed slightly behind drums and bass, and the keyboards are a little bit behind those. Not to worry, even when the guitar work is almost tough to make out (taper must have been on one side of the stage) you have to remember Gilmour plays a lot of high notes which tend to carry across any hall so they are picked up here. My opinion is that because of the elegance of the way the bass and drums are recorded, when the guitar is really present it makes for something pretty amazing when it all comes together (and it does, just not all the time). Audience 8.5 Both sets are very good and clear, but I give the nod to the first show because during the second show there are some odd stage sound situations and I have to fault the sound man who was probably nodding at the desk (possibly shot up with gram before the gig?). Anyway, historically speaking what you have here is pure gold and the literal birth of country rock. Great players, solid all around.
