Pro Studio 9.8 - Glorious sound quality, and the intimate setting of the Record Plant radio broadcasts back in the day is just perfect here because we all know what happened to this guy’s career after Margaritaville took off…would have been hard to reproduce such intimate settings after that. Audience 8.6 and Audience 8.5 ... two shows are represented in this set, and both sound similar but the 2nd disc sounds maybe a touch more distant and less defined, but also less overloaded. Both sets are guitar-centric, so Page admirers are going to be good good with this set. -
Audience 8.8 - Sonically it sits in a good place. Although separation of instruments is a little quirky to my ears, the signal is very strong, as if right in front of the main PA system, but Plant is crystal clear, and the guitar/bass combo is super fat right behind him. It makes for an interesting experience, really giving a sense of being in the front row. -
Audience 8.7 - Is it possible to be too good of a player? I mean, he’s clearly got mastery of the instrument, and the material, but there’s something about a player that gets too close to the edge that excites me, like Rory Gallagher for instance, you know, where it seems at any moment they might just completely take it to the ragged edge – and Joe has a very controlled fire in contrast which is fine, but I need more. Fans will love this performance, he’s clearly at the top here. -

Audience 8.6 - A “crisp” sounding tape, emphasis on drummer and vocals in the mix but you also can really hear the background keys which is nice. Not saying Joe is buried, just that this house mix seems very democratic in allowing all players to have a presence. I appreciate hearing how much the piano and keys helped shape this material. The audience is very respectful, and they love their Joe, that’s for sure. -
Audience 8.1 - A tape new to circulation and it is decent sounding. It has some force behind it, although lacks some definition but with only a very few ’73 era Barnstorm tapes out there, this is a most welcome find. -

Audience 9.1 - Once taper settles in, this tape TAKES OFF and is pretty impressive. What struck me more than anything is not only the realism, but the wide dynamic range. It’s also a very powerful recording, you get a sense of the volume, especially when you get isolated drums during some of those small breaks in between measures, they are full bodied and great sounding. Soundboard 9.2 - Taken from a television broadcast, but to my ears does not sound all compressed and one dimensional, so my guess it is a source not derived from the broadcast but tape possibly made of the gig separate from the TV production. Who knows for sure, but it sounds pretty good. -
Audience 8.8 - I can’t believe it was 32 years ago I attended, and recorded, this concert. It was my birthday present, although this actually went down one day before my b-day. It’s weird because Joe also sang “Birthday” the classic Beatles song (and it wasn’t for me although I imagined that it was ha ha!). This recording is only now being made available, and it sounds great and just how I remember it, with Joe being very animated and playing lots of numbers not normally played, and telling funny stories. It was a great night, I had a blast. Audience 8.5 - A somewhat roughed up old tape with some hiss, and audience members who appear on the tape in their excitement (not too bad) but the music is here man, it’s relatively close to the stage and guitar seemed to be a little back behind the rest except when he used the talk box and it was front and center… very strange! Bass is sitting nicely in the mix (not a boomy sound, pretty defined). I enjoyed listening, especially because Joe was really good, he kept me engaged with this one. I found the audience near taper to be interesting and I enjoyed hearing them on the tape believe it or not. It is a real time capsule! So, all in all, I do recommend to fans because how much Joe/Barnstorm is out there anyway? Soundboard 8.8 - The audio is excellent soundboard but the mix leaves out most bottom end, although the bassist is there I can hear him sometimes! Is the recording trebly and thin? Nope. It’s a good recording, with everything you really came to hear which is guitar…and of that there is plenty. Ducking, diving, turning around on a dime, vibrating, electric and fun. I can highly recommend this even if the bass is…where’s the bass? More Bass Please ha ha! Still excellent, still worthwhile. CD 1&2 SDBRD/AUD Matrix 9.3 CD 2&3 Soundboard 9.5 - A great overview of John’s music contained herein. I admit I wasn’t too knowledgeable of his stuff, I knew his name (he is from Houston, he was just one of our locals) and had numerous chances to see him live…but sadly never did. I should have. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs. Audience 7.8 - A large hall sound, but cleanly captured. Kind of sounds like you are there – tons of atmosphere without boominess. Pleasant! -
Audience 8.4 - This is a very rare glimpse at a short lived incarnation of Johnny Winter’s band, mainly the addition of his brother Edgar. So it’s an interesting tape, sounds VERY close to the main P.A. system and consequently has some upper mid crowding which makes for a strange mixture of a tape that is both clear and bright, and overcrowded in the upper mid band. It’s good sounding but does not give you much separation of instruments. For collectors this has to be considered a very important tape though. -
Pro FM Broadcast 8.8 - Sounds like the band is right at the top of their game, with Johnny inspired and ripping out one superb lead after another flawlessly. -
Audience 8.4 - Surprisingly good, knowing just how few good audience tapers are from this period of the early Johnny Winter And. Now, the tape does show signs of age, mainly with some light hiss present and occasionally the volume decreases but not in a really annoying way at all. This is some fiery playing and a pretty clear, and sometimes dynamic tape. -
Audience 9.2 - Amazing recording! Not that it is perfect, in fact, the audio mix is off, but it is off in a spectacular way. So, it’s basically guitar, I mean, plugged directly into your brain and proceeding to torch your brain cells until they are dry spots on the carpet. Yeah, it’s like that, but don’t worry if you do not hear vocals perfectly, or bass is too low, or drums are not pounding because while all that is here, it is predominately the Johnny Winter and his hypnotizing psychedelic blues at maximum volume show. I believe this show was recorded a little later than the official live album recordings. -

Audience 7.4 - Consider this a big upgrade to whatever was previously circulating. From original master cassette tape, the sound is focused on guitar primarily, with everything else being somewhat unclear or just not as distinct in the mix. I would call this average, but I am happy to have an upgrade to what was once very much below average. Besides, it’s classic Johnny Winter And – perhaps many people’s favorite line up. -
Audience 8.5 - A good and clear tape that stays pretty much in the center channel, without a bunch of dynamics but also no distractions either. It’s a solid capture of a great period for Johnny Winter. -
Soundboard 8.8 - A good live radio broadcast with emphasis on the guitar where it should be of course. Sound ranges towards treble and that gives guitar lots of bite, however everything else is right there. -
Soundboard 8.7 - This is a pro recording but what hurts it is the upper end frequencies, they seem a bit shrill to me. Now, the good news is that you can EQ this and since the highs are so present, you won’t lose them with any EQ’ing. So I think this tape is a sound engineer’s dream. -
Radio Broadcast 8.9 - Two different sources were used to make one complete broadcast and as such there is slight audio change throughout, but all is good because it is all very good! Some signs of time and dust but for the most part it is a tape that delivers…and what you might notice is how articulate Johnny’s playing is around this time.
