• Soundboard 9.5 - A lively board tape that suggests the band was thinking of a live release. This is not a reference mix to my ears. • Audience 8.7 - No other recordings strikes me the same way this one does. The best way to describe it is...it makes you feel like these sounds have travelled through a worm hole to reach us, having been hurtling through the past, space, time, to get to your ears again now. You hear the atmosphere of ancient Rome, the Pantheon, the theatre, the crowds, the GUITAR...echoing, then landing like a punch in the face. But, there's problems sometimes when travelling through time and space, you don't always come out completely intact as this old tape clearly shows. Does that mean it's bad? Quite contrary! I was mesmerized and listened to the whole thing. It's not great, it's not bad, it's not going to win any contests but it is UNIQUE and a blast to hear. I'm in Rome in 1972 at a Who concert and my seats are on Pete's side of the stage and I am getting my wish to be smothered by the delicious sounds of a Gibson SG in the hands of a maniac genius at full volume. How can you not want to know about this? It is well worth having. • Audience 8.8 - I am SO relieved that the sound quality here is good, because for me I do not really collect Tom Petty recordings, I mean I like him fine but I just had way to much other stuff I needed to listen to...BUT if you pointed me to something different, I suppose I would take you up on it and so that is what this is. I must say, it's really interesting! Quality-wise it's really fine, and very immersive (yes, you know you are rubbing shoulders with a boatload of people) but I find it wasn't off-putting at all. Now for the great news! The parts with Stevie Nicks are as great as you would have hoped them to be. Yes!!! • London Audience 8.7 - A decent recording that remains consistent throughout. Everything comes through, albeit not with a lot of detailed anything, just good overall clarity and decent mix. I would commend the taper because I know he had to have battled with the Hammersmith Odeon acoustics, loud audience, louder band, and consumer grade gear and yet still managed a good capture. Brussels Audience 8.9 - This is a strong recording and finds the band performing at a very high level. Good sound balance, and though you get a sense of the sheer volume, it does not stress the tape. • Soundboard 9.6 - There's not much better than having these early Ghost board tapes. This is just one of those bands that you need the tone to go with the whole presentation - classy songwriting, unique vocals, superior musicianship. all said this is a band that has great tone. • Audience 8.8 - This here is a very nice tape! It also shows the band firing on all four cylinders (yes, I am afraid this is only a 4 banger but this engine puts out more horsepower than a 12 cylinder Lambo!). • Soundboard 9.4 - After the sound mix gets sorted out, and the vocals are brought up in the mix, this recording really takes off and blossoms beautifully. Deep rich bass, and a nice overall blend of the drums while highlighting the guitar. A lovely live document. • Audience 8.7 - A recording that, while it does not open up to reveal a heck of a lot of depth, it is clear and present, with thump and some big arena bombast. The vocals do not appear up front in the mix, and low end is not highly defined although very present in a "feel" sense, the entirety of the sound can be roundly enjoyed though, as the relative clarity and presence of the band give this old tape credibility in the collector world. • Audience 8.8 - A very pleasant, easy on the ears recording. There's a lot of positive atmosphere and some mild audience participation but this is definitely one you can get into. Not much from this tour, so it is very good to be able to hear them as they were in 1982. Electric Light Orchestra Saarbrucken, Germany March 4, 1982 Disc 1 1. Twilight 2. Yours Truly 2095 3. • Audience 8.7 - Small club feel, and a good tape to learn what this band was about, since there's a strange sort of "Spinal Tap" mysticism about them that has endured. The old recording here sounds kind of dated, and there's a few occasional sonic oddities that pop up now and again (like gentle phasing) but thankfully these are short-lived. The tape here is not muddy or screechy, it is focused primarily on guitars and vocals in the mix, so season to taste with your EQ if you want to roll in some added low end. It is a very good tape and fun to listen to. ANVIL Golden Mask Bar Arvida,Quebec, CAN. 1981 Disc 1 01. School Love 02. Steamin' 03. 666 04. Flyin' Cryin' 05. I Want You Both (With Me) 06. • Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. This set list is also great, so I forgive the imperfections and applaud the mastering efforts. STRYPER Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim, California 3.15.85 Disc 1 01. intro 02. Loud 'N' Clear 03. • Audience 8.8 - This is one of those kind of tapes that sound realistic. That doesn't mean to say it sounds lifelike, because your ears hear in hi-fidelity and detect all the nuance (as long as the volume isn't earsplittingly loud). This tape just has that live feel to it. Rory GALLAGHER Pavillon Baltard Nogent sur Marne, France January 25th, 1980 DISC 1 01. Intro + tuning 02. Follow Me 03. Shin Kicker 04. Off The Handle 05. • Soundboard 9.2 - Some fiddling at the board to dial in the mix starts this recording, so bear with it because it does get better. This board is not as smooth and sparkling as the one on Volume 1, but it still kicks ass all day long. Ted Nugent Mississippi Coast Coliseum Biloxi, MS January 10th 1979 Disc 1 1. • Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man!  NOTE:  Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs.
