• Pro Soundboard 9.1 - Recorded for broadcast in a studio setting so you know it is going to be really good. Tape is just a touch “aged” in that it is not as bright as you would expect but still darn good.
  • Audience 9.0 - This is a very fine recording no doubt about it, although there is some kind of audio artifact present at the extreme high almost like it might be from the main microphone (stage mic). So, I don’t think it is the tape, or taper’s gear. At first you may think it is almost like a noise reduction artifact but it is not that which you will agree when you hear the electric guitars. That’s probably the only thing you can knock this for, but even that is rather minor, the music is very present, great live mix too. • Audience 7.9 - Very clear, not exceptionally dynamic but this is very enjoyable!
  • Audience 9.1 - Recorded with equipment that sounds like it was well beyond the standard consumer grade stuff. Nice and warm, capturing the band close, with some nice detail, and the atmosphere is palpable. I mean, quite literally this recording is a time machine – you seem to be physically transported to 1974, to this small venue in Boston (actually Cambridge, a suburb of Boston). Very nice! • Audience 9.2 - Surprisingly clear and vibrant..and very live sounding with LOADS of that atmosphere, you know, where you can hear people taking a huge toke and hacking immediately after. • Recorded at Sunset Sound Studios 1980. Outtakes from Women and Children First. Professional studio quality sound.
  • Soundboard 9.0 - Excellent and rare document of an amazing band at an amazing time of their career.…simply put this is an absolute must have!
  • 5.1 - Sounds like it was recorded on a cheap old cassette recorder. No low end, squeaky sounding...but, historically significant recording. Bonus tracks sound excellent.
  • Audience 8.4 - I expected more from a post 2000 audience recording, but this one is decend just seems to be toward the back of the hall. You do get all instruments, and mixed properly, with pretty much Eddie and DLR being the clearest and out front. Solos sound good as they seem to swirl around the room giving it a cool atmosphere. The show does seem to get better as it goes, might even boost the rating another .3 for the slight improvement.
  • Audience 8.7 - Solid! Good presence, great clarity with just occasional moments where maybe someone walks in front of the mic. A nice “live” atmosphere makes for a very enjoyable show.
  • Soundboard 8.8 - A welcomed board tape that I knew nothing of previously before discovering it. It’s fine, it’s not a “pristine” or sterile tape by any means and it does sound…dated a bit but it’s the mighty ‘Halen in all their splendor and it’s great! Van Halen 1979-10-02 Tucson, Az. • Audience 8.5 - The better of the Japan shows. Clear, in your face, average separation of instruments but Eddie in great form and can hear every note.
  • Audience 7.5 - Two complete shows from 1984 that see very limited trading and as far as I know there’s been no CD release for either. There is good reason for this – these recordings sucked ass. Unfortunate too, because both gigs are screamers. Now, the good news! Both shows have been re-mastered using the best technology available (whatever they did 35 years ago obviously did not do much) and the results are that you can hear music now, you can hear what Eddie is doing and you can hear the band. No, it is not going to be sonically superior, but it is sonically better than any previous versions, and that is saying an awful lot! Best way to enjoy these is to listen to the original recordings and then pop these discs in, and THEN you will understand the work that went into saving these gigs from obscurity. The packaging on this title is superb by the way.
  • Audience 8.7 - Really loud and up front sound but no distortion makes for a real thrill ride. I love this recording. I think it captures the manic energy happening on stage. Wonderful
  • Audience 7.8 - Not bad big stadium sound, a little muddiness but compared to other 78 audience tape (especially overseas shows) this is one of the best.
  • Audience 7.8 - Stadium sound all the way. Boomy and loud and CRAZY audience but damn, it’s hard not to love it. The good news here is the drums are defined and not just a sloppy boomy mess, the guitar slices through the mud and lands on your ears in the right spot, then Dave yelps, and does his thing. The end of Hot For Teacher when the drum solo starts the whole place goes bananas.
  • Audience 8.4 (both shows) - I absolutely love this set. A must for fans.
  • Audience 7.8 - A MAJOR upgrade here folks! This recording used to suffer a horrible low mid range boom and muddiness that killed an otherwise decent tape and really good performance capture. Now, even though it is still roughly an average tape, it is minus that deal-breaking boom/mud in the middle. Apparently, the recording being in stereo, while mastering they found by moving it wider (stereo panning) they got the affected channel muted enough where it was crap sounding, but saved what music was there. It worked wonders. Now this tape is worth your time, so rediscover it today.
  • This is an Audience recording, my rating is a 7.3 quality, not a bad show.  It's got one thing I can appreciate, a lively atmosphere without being obnoxious and intrusive although I got to tell you, sometimes the audience makes the performance...want proof?  Listen to the Madison Square Garden 1984 show - you can honestly say that the loud, obnoxious, and totally over the top crowd and atmosphere is what totally makes that show. I found myself more interested in the crowd believe it or not. I must offer that show in the future - seriously the audience is the best part even though the band is on fire and inspired by the crowd. This one is close to that mania, but nothing compares to that MSG show.
  • Audience 8.2 - This is a very in demand show from this tour. Why? Because it is perhaps the best audience recording from 1984, but it is not perfect, it just has more great qualities than bad. I think the only knock is the absence of bottom end, but that is what an Equalizer is for. Get this and have fun!
  • Audience 8.7 - A rip-roaring blast of a tape! First thing you are going to think after maybe 1 minute is how dejected Montrose and Journey must have been after following the ascending Van Halen. Man, I felt bad for them and this show happened decades ago!  It’s just the sonic equivalent of a shooting star, Eddie is blistering and hits every note with perfection, the bass is detailed and not just a booming thud, drums are OK and DLR is a little behind the band but who cares?  The taper did a fine job, some minor hiccups every now and then but thankfully very few to deal with and they don’t last long. I am liking this show and the tape is just fine for its age. A keeper! Van Halen Tower Theater Upper Darby, Pennsylvania March 24, 1978 1. On Fire 2. I’m The One 3. Bass Solo 4. • Audience 8.8 - Excellent sound with good balance and great live mix where you pretty much get a good blend of the bass and drums without that annoying boominess. Great time period too! • Soundboard 8.8 - A loud board mix, with a little crispiness in the ultra high frequency but what this actually translates to as the show plays is CRUNCH factor which helps liven up what could have been a flat, lifeless board tape. The remastering helped because the levels were kind of low, and the bass needed to be dialed back just a tick, but just that light touch really made this tape a whole point better. Fantastic prime era Halen comin’ out yer speakers like lightning bolts. MUST HAVE!!!
  • Audience 8.8 – This is NOT the Monsters of Rock show, it’s actually the last DLR (classic era) show and it’s pretty good!  It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. • Audience 7.0 -7.3 - Why the funky rating? Because what started out as a dismal audience tape has slowly over the years morphed into a listenable show. Why would you care? Because 1978 shows KILL! If you loved and miss the vintage Eddie Van Halen signature between riff fills that he used to dish out effortlessly, than get this one because later he began relying too much on tried and true signature frills and less and less on inventing killer little hooky lead fills on the spot. This show has them, and you can hear them, and it’s weird because this tape has a very strange dynamic to it where the sound channel down the middle opens up enough to let Eddie’s sound permeate and even float around a little above the din of the bass and kick. So the re-mastering addressed some of that by dropping some of the low and low mid boom and attenuating the upper mids and highs with multi-band compression. It helped a lot. Still kind of rough but actually the show is so interesting and just enough above being not listenable that it will still suck you right in and you will actually play it all the way through. I promise that. I did, without regrets.
  • Audience 8.7 - For me, this tape was completely unknown. So, hearing it for the first time I was very excited because it’s a very comfortable sounding tape. The dynamics may be a little bunched up right in the middle but the frequency range here, going from lows to highs, is very comfortable to the ears. It’s also taped somewhat close to the stage, unlike the Fresno tapes which are good but a bit distant. I compare because the dynamics are similar. A good one for sure! • Audience 9.0 - Fantastic! Stunning performance and incredibly realistic feel of the show captured on this tape. Right up close, freakin’ PA’s pumping but recording levels are set proper and you get slammed in the face with a red hot Van Halen. Love this!
  • Audience 8.3 - Do not let the low rating dissuade you from obtaining this show, because it is actually pretty clear and for this tour probably one of the better auds. It does lean toward low end, in a good way because it does not crowd everyone else out. Eddie is on fire and you hear him well, vocals and bass are solid (vox are a touch behind it all but still right there) so perhaps drums are the weakness but even then I can hear what he’s doing. Once your ears adjust, man this ain’t that bad. • Audience 8.4 - Man, what an amazing show this is! and not for the reasons you might think. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this BECAUSE OF THE AUDIENCE!  Yes, it's so unique to find a show that I get into the crowd as much as the band. In this case, the band, as good as they are (and they are extremely pumped up as the crowd pushes them further and further every song), the audience is the real star of the show. I've just never heard anything like this - the recording is excellent, capturing the atmosphere and the audience very well - notice I did not say "the music" here?  Really, I kid you not, this show is about the crowd and the band is just along for the ride. Incredible document. Wish I was there!
  • Audience 8.0 - Rated rather conservatively here, at times it goes a notch or two higher. This recording does capture the excitement of the gig rather well. Frequencies are not squashed, you can play with this.

  • Audience 7.4 - Pretty average recording of a rare gig not seldom traded. The good news for collectors is that it has been remastered to reveal more in the tape (more music that is). It’s just really loud, and it distorts, you have to appreciate that it was recorded at all, now that we know just how scarce these early 80’s recordings are. On the plus side, there are moments where it is much clearer - like the guitar solo and mellower parts. I would recommend this to the collector who focuses on classic DLR era Halen, to have the best version wrapped up in eye-popping packaging. This show is complete, every second captured for posterity.
  • Audience 8.6 - A clear tape, possibly a master source, that presents a very nice performance by the band with a tape that gives you a reasonable recollection of the evening. The tape leans towards a high end propensity while sacrificing any deep lows but I am 100% sure you will LOVE this one because it’s just one of those tapes that seems to get better, the ears adjust, and before you know it you are saying “damn this is pretty good”…because it actually is. As Pretty Woman ends (and there’s a moment in the song where Dave lets loose on some dingus that threw something at him) and it goes into Eddie’s solo, man, this tape TAKES OFF and becomes an easy 9.3 rating. • Audience 8.7 A real surprise here because when I first came across this one I assumed it would be crap. Why had I not heard of it before if it was good?  Well, sometimes stuff just slips through the cracks I guess. • Audience/Soundboard - The Houston Music Hall tape is a 7.1 quality Audience. but it is a first generation and therefore does represent the best possible source of the concert that kicked off their 1979 tour. The bonus material is all Soundboard including the Bradford, UK. which does rate a solid 8.8 with signs of age, the US festival portion rates 9.7 being from a pristine condition transcription disc.
  • Early Soundboard 8.6 - High energy; it does get a little "hot" as far as the mix but it doesn't detract from the experience of hearing Van Halen in a small club playing their asses off before they hit the big time. Dave is in fine form, as always. A great gig, a very good recording, a great band at a great time. Highly recommended.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - Recently remastered to give a good board tape a much needed kick in the ass. I heard this tape years ago, and I love what was done to bring out the bad-assery this performance was.
  • Audience 8.8 - Very clear and with enough dynamics present to really provide an authentic experience of virtually being there. These kinds of recordings, while technically not considered as excellent (unfairly) due to the measurable fidelity of the audio (in the objective sense) are actually excellent in their own right. This is a well done recording, with the sound “floating” above you and giving you a sense of time and place, of literally being there. • Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy!  It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before. • Audience 8.7 - A raucous affair this one, the music is recorded very well, on excellent gear, but the stage mix is not ideal, but I am going to be critical mainly because I don’t like where the guitars are in the sound mix. The music is hot, not only performance wise but also on the tape itself, it’s pushing the meters to the breaking point…but it doesn’t break…much. There’s some “noise” somewhere in it, it’s not bad, it’s not a deal breaker, but I can tell it is there and I think it’s just some minor breakup in one band somewhere in the mid range. All in all, this is a pretty good one to get. • All discs are Audience recordings of VERY GOOD quality. All sound bright, and with the exception of maybe one show (which sounds a little crowded up in the middle frequency), are pretty wide and clear. Having listened to all of it, I have to rate this set as spectacularly fun to listen to, it's just a really good time for the band who are riding high on their successes but not yet ready to relax too much. Having a good time, but meaning business too. Great stuff! • Audience 8.3 - What is happening with this tape is that the bass frequencies are too much for the microphone, and it causes some peaking (not pure distortion, just level peak). On the plus side, it’s relatively open in all the other frequencies, meaning you can actually listen to this show and once your ears sort of adjust to the limitations, it’s not that bad. I would still call this one for hardcore collectors only though, even when there is a shortage of 1979 tapes. On a personal note, I listened to the entire show and liked it, I think it has a place in the collection. Van Halen Northlands Coliseum Edmonton, AB, Canada September 18, 1979 Disc 1 1. • Audience 8.7 - This recording is one of those that initially has you thinking “ok, good but not great” but seriously, let it play. It is a LOUD tape, yes, sometimes bordering on distortion in the upper mid frequencies, yes – but when you get to Unchained there are moments where you completely get on board with this one. Trust me. It has a magic element to it despite being a little overloaded. I got sucked into it big time and my ears adjusted after only one song, after that it was tons of fun and the tape is close up and bristling with unbelievable electric energy. In other words – this was a total blast! • Audience 8.6 - Slight tape saturation. Eddie is front and center and is SMOKING hot. I love DLR in the first song forgetting the words and turning it into a lyric. Classic VH in every way.
