Audience 9.6 - Man, someone sure knew what they were doing. This is great, like it could be a broadcast. The tip off for me was when I heard the whistle from someone in the audience near the taper. Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man! NOTE: Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs. Audience 9.4 - Fantastic atmosphere and vibe on this one. A strong recording that captures their full, glorious girl power. I can almost taste the delicious sweat emanating off Susanna Hoffs' super hotness - OK, so I had a major crush on her back in the day (does that explain it?) FM Broadcast 9.2 - Even though this is a broadcast, it retains a "rough" mix quality to it which suits the band's sound and style. The recording quality is fantastic, it does not have a lifeless feel but rather an obvious impromptu feel as you can tell by the stage feedback as the mix gets dialed in. Audience 9.0 - I have to say this is a very good recording if your preference is to really be able to make out the vocals and to hear every nuance of the lead guitar possible. In fact, the sonics tend to favor the upper mid-range and highs, to the extent that I was not enthusiastic about the sound of the snare drum here...but that just shows you how articulate that range is. Is it screechy then? No, it's not that this is chirpy or screechy high at all, but one may want to play with the EQ to bring up more low end maybe...because to my ears that is what it needs. Otherwise, again, this is a VERY clear, articulate (especially upper mid and highs) recording. Black Sabbath Mid-Hudson Civic Center Poughkeepsie,NY. USA 31 May 1989 Disc 1 101. Audience 9.7 - Each and every one of these recordings is spotless. Taper was dedicated to getting the absolute best position, with superb gear, and above all without blemish. The results are spectacular! Gilmour is in excellent form, so this adds to the listening experience tremendously and it's quite hard to stop once you press play. So sit back and strap yourself in to a long journey through past and present in a most luxuriating way. Again - it sounds like the same taper throughout the entire 6 night stand. Audience 9.2 - I would have given this a higher rating but for some occasional volume fluctuations. Minus those, this is a "raise the hair on your back" type of recording. I can't explain it, some tapes just have it, this unquantifiable element, it's a lot to do with the band being recorded as much as it is in how they were recorded, and where exactly the taper sat, and what he used to record - so you take all that and factor it in to what is happening to you as you listen to an event that took place decades ago...that comes to life again and you are right there. As I listened to this, my neck hairs stood up. Audience 8.8 - A well made recording that does straddle the fence a bit. There's some narrowness in how well defined the extreme ends are in both low and high end, meaning your middle frequencies are spot-on, clear, and defined but when you get to the real high end it gets crinkly up there. It does not damage the listening experience but could if you really crank up the volume. The taper does some adjusting it seems, as the show progresses it sounds like the tonality, or levels...something changes slightly...I don't know what really happens but sometimes this show is dialed in and sounds really great and then just ever so slightly it gets less defined or maybe it is my imagination. Either way, this is a really decent recording. Audience 9.0 - The only thing keeping this from attaining legendary status is the slight distortion present in a very specific middle to upper band in the frequency range. It's not a deal-breaker, it's in a place where you still get all the richness of the low end and the detail in the high end. The taper obviously used very good gear, so maybe the microphone he used and the location in the venue perhaps limited the recording in a way, because this is still a damn good tape but could have been a bona-fide must have. Audience 9.5 - This is the good stuff! A well balanced and dynamic recording as close and clear as you can get to Susanna...ahhh...you can hear but not touch! Audience 9.2 - Here we have a real treat for those who now realize what we had in our youths with the "Seattle Sound" as epitomized by Soundgarden, a sound that fit the times very appropriately. Now for the kicker: This show not only sounds great but has plenty of fun moments with Chris Cornell and the audience (I think he's a bit toasty on the potent German suds). What I liked most is the live sound here is mixed well for the guitars especially, only Chris gets a bit drowned out during the extreme volume heavier parts but overall it's hitting the sweet spot, at least for me.SOUNDGARDEN April 1, 1994 Musikhalle Frankfurt, Germany Disc 1 01. Audience 8.7 - While this tape may not enjoy the same clarity as some of the Japan 82 recordings, it does have a good powerful delivery nonetheless. Vocals come through the clearest, but the combination of bass, and guitars follows with the force of a piledriver to your skull...and I rather like it. The bonus here is the inclusion of the set by the band The Rods, and having never heard of any live tapes of them before, it was a most welcome addition to this great vintage Iron Maiden set.Iron Maiden Colston Hall Bristol, England 1982-03-11 Disc 1 {79:49} 01 - Intro [Doctor Doctor] ........ 3:39 02 - The Ides of March ............ 0:51 03 - Murders in the Rue Morgue .... 3:28 04 - Wrathchild ................... 3:32 05 - Run to the Hills ............. 4:25 06 - Children of the Damned ....... 4:46 07 - The Number of the Beast ...... 5:31 08 - Another Life ................. 3:43 09 - Killers ...................... 5:39 10 - 22 Acacia Avenue ............. 6:31 11 - Total Eclipse ................ 4:12 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:20 13 - Transylvania ................. 6:12 14 - The Prisoner ................. 5:48 15 - Hallowed Be Thy Name ......... 7:14 16 - Phantom of the Opera ......... 6:51 17 - Iron Maiden .................. 3:58 Disc 2 {63:50} 01 - Sanctuary .................... 6:52 02 - Drifter ...................... 7:46 03 - Running Free ................. 5:03 04 - Prowler ...................... 4:32 Bonus Rods 05 - Rocking And Rolling .......... 3:26 06 - Waiting For Tomorrow ......... 4:02 07 - Get Ready To Rock 'n' Roll ... 5:34 08 - Nothing Going On In The City . 3:32 09 - Too Hot To Stop .............. 4:07 10 - Crank It Up .................. 5:54 11 - Getting Higher ............... 3:42 12 - Drum Solo .................... 3:50 13 - Power Lover .................. 5:23

Soundboard 8.7 - What we have here with these two shows are a couple of primitive soundboards, and by that I mean they may have run the sound through the board but what ended up on the tape is NOT what you would expect. It's not a manicured, expert mix and pristine sound, it's a very raw, brutal, loud, obnoxious, hellish, and violent turbulence of sound that somehow fits the vibe to a tee. This is Slayer, in 1985, and it sounds like it. Wonderful in its rawness, brutal in its aggressive sonic assault, and 100% vintage Slayer.
