Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present. Audience 8.3 - Limitations with the microphone is probably what prevents this recording from blossoming as it sometimes seems like it wants to do. You can hear it, for instance, during some of the passages, but I think the overloading of the bass crowds out the guitar a bit too much (although you can hear guitar, just not in a clear and detailed manner). Drums and keyboards dominate with a very insistent, pulsing bass undercurrent throughout. Does that count this out? Not at all, due to the disparity of live BJH recordings, I think this one is worth exploring. The compositions and playing make up for the limitations on the tape. Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. Soundboard 9.0 - The unmistakable emphasis in this mix is the percussion (and to a lesser extent keyboards) but that makes for an interesting take on this one…you are forced to reckon with the powerhouse engine room for once, and with no regrets either. It’s still a good recording, and everyone else is there but you will know who’s taking the stage in the mix here. Audience 8.8 - Well here it is folks, the BEST early vintage ZZ Top recording to ever surface. We already gave up a long time ago that the band would dig into their archives for us, but now it’s been completely left up to the fans to provide the early documents…and for better or worse they have (mostly worse). After all this time a tape has surfaced that presents a powerful early testament to the rocking blues power of ZZ Top before they “made it” to the FM bigtime. The hits were already in the repertoire, but only hinting at the massive success to come. This is the REAL DEAL – a clear, loud, balsy tape from very early in the bands career. Pro TV Studio 8.7 - A good live recording with atmosphere, it sounds slightly dated but has the ability to transport you to the time and place…I think that when a recording can do that, it overcomes some of the limitations that may be present. I would venture to guess this must have been a difficult show to control, and a recording made with an eye for a broadcast that they fought with every step of the way. This music is glorious, it’s maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s very heartfelt and genuine, delicate, contemplative, uplifting. Highly recommended! Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. I mean, they play a song called “Prince Of The Punks” so what does that tell you? Audience 8.2 - Well, it isn’t a recording that will win any grammies but damn if it isn’t RAW just like the band and their music. This recording actually suits this band – it’s a little rough, but it’s brutal and in your face. The vocals fight for bandwidth against angry and loud guitars, driving bass, and furious non-stop drums. It’s actually kind of a fun listen despite its limitations. Oh, and some good news – it is not a muddy mess at all, it’s just a loud band in a small club sounding for all the world like the debut of punk rock. Pro Broadcast 9.3 - A long improvisational track which really is, in my opinion, way ahead of everyone else in terms of trying new things and being completely off the cuff with sounds and textures. It’s not like traditional space rock, in fact it is not even rock, although the band are players and can make noise when they want to make noise. Audience 8.7 - A VERY powerful recorded sound coming out at you like a hurricane. Thankfully this tape holds together, although it sounds like it’s going to tear apart any second – it’s quite a frantic recording if I can describe it that way. You are like placed in front of the mains, and surprisingly you can hear everybody, especially Klaus who sounds BRILLIANT as does the entire band. Soundboard 8.9 - There is no problem with the audio fidelity of this title, it sounds great – but that is not to say there is not a problem with it. So, it’s basically like this: If you want to hear what Radiohead themselves consider their biggest ever gig, than you will have to deal with what sounds like a quadraphonic recording in stereo…which basically means you get an in/out phasing effect almost throughout the entire show. Is that a deal-breaker? It might be, then again it’s not a muddy audience tape it is a very good board so the negative effects are not nearly as horrible as they could be. Soundboard 9.7 - This is the one to get if you want to hear this band at arguably the peak of their powers. Sounding like a flashier, somewhat more progressive version of Iron Maiden to these ears, but whoa nelly there is a whole lot of premium quality musicianship happening and it is happening in fantastic quality. Most recording of busy, progressive metal groups simply have a hard time mixing the different instruments in such a way as to deliver the punch without over-killing it and destroying the integrity of the sound. This recording is brilliant because it doesn’t do that, and I honestly have never heard live early Queensyche in this manner before and it is a thrill, it’s a MUST have if you have even a passing interest. It’s very good, I find no real problems other than occasional drop outs, and it’s maybe a little distracting here and there but I don’t think it kills the fun. Pro Radio Broadcast 9.8 - When hearing a recording of a great band in this fidelity, it reveals much more about the artist than what you might learn just listening to their hits on the radio. For instance, thier music is much more layered and nuanced once you hear this show, even live the band is so tight, so professional, that stuff is going on you don’t even get from the album tracks. FM Radio Broadcast 8.8 - A tape that has held up decently over the years but does not have the expected clarity associated with a radio broadcast. That being said, it’s still very good, has the depth and dynamics just enough for a progressive rock performance on par with the likes of ELP. Great material here…a band that should have continued on but for disco taking over and what not. FM Broadcast 8.8 - A tape that sounds…1978. That doesn’t mean it’s bad at all, it’s just a rather dated sounding broadcast to my ears. That means it kind of captures the time period rather well, and the quality itself is pretty good, but not exhibiting the usual dynamic of an FM broadcast. Not enough 1978 era tapes of excellent quality though, so grab this one. Audience 9.1 - Taper is close to the action, and this gives the sound an exciting edge to it that pulls you in and doesn’t let you go. Guitar is palpable, drums are crisp and detailed, even organ sounds appear when a lot of other audience recordings seem to bury it. VERY cool and definitely a must have! Audience 9.1 - Once taper settles in, this tape TAKES OFF and is pretty impressive. What struck me more than anything is not only the realism, but the wide dynamic range. It’s also a very powerful recording, you get a sense of the volume, especially when you get isolated drums during some of those small breaks in between measures, they are full bodied and great sounding. Studio tapes 9.0 - Great to hear this raw, early pre LP stuff because quite frankly it’s fantastic. It’s a different take because there is a real sense of urgency with this recording, like the band know it’s critical to make it happen or they remain bums on the streets of San Francisco. We all know what happened next.
